The Real Ale Invitational at Yards Brewing (901 N. Delaware Ave.) popped off yesterday, when cask ale fans were treated to a sunny afternoon slightly nicer than today's torrential poutfest. Now in its second year at Yards (the first installment of the Invitational was held at Triumph), the Invitational featured more than 20 cask-conditioned beers, from both local breweries (Dogfish Head dispensed its dry-hopped 75-Minute IPA, a clever blend of its 60 and 90 Minute IPAs; Troegs had its infamous Nugget Nectar available) and from hard-to-find producers from across the Atlantic, including the crisp Pitchfork Bitter from England's RCH and the one-of-a-kind Mols from Denmark's Wintercoat, a peculiar beer that has an odd, herbaceous bent thanks to the introduction of wild thyme and juniper branches during brewing. Generous pours from smiling firkin attendees, an excellent snackage spread (Birchrun Hills Farm was selling its amazing cheeses for sosocheap), live music, and a little NCAA hoops on the projection screen rounded out a hell of an afternoon.

The best part? There were quite a few heads in attendance, but Yards' facility is so spacious that it never felt cramped or claustrophobic. You could hear yourself talk, and you didn't have to wait in line for 20 minutes for a 2-ounce pour from the ass end of an about-to-kick keg. It's the ideal spot for a walk-up brewery event like this one. We'll be back next year no doubt.
