The original Ugly Mug in Cape May

Andy Cosenza, owner of Old City club Glam (52 S. Second St.), has plans to convert his space into a Ugly Mug, a franchise of the tavern that originated in Cape May some 30 years ago. Head of Franchising Bob Ransom, whose family has since sold the flagship Mug, says the Philly location will serve as the template for national expansion. They're putting in dinner seating and bars on both floors of the space; there's room for about 135 on the ground level and 75 on the second floor.

For those unfamiliar, the Mug is an American tavern through and through; nice beer selection, with grub like the Ocean Burger (topped with shrimp) and the Maryland Burger (topped with crab). Their signature interior touch: coffee mugs hanging from the ceiling. Ransom says there'll be close to 1000 dangling at this location.

Look for the spot to open sometime in early 2009.

Seriously? This doesn't result in blood-and-brain-stained chunks of ceramic lodged in patrons' cracked skulls? At the very least, I hope there aren't any bar fights.

[...] Decidedly un-glam Ugly Mug to take over Glam on 2nd Street. Interestingly, Ugly Mug was rumored to be taking over Sassafras more than a year ago. [Meal Ticket] [...]

What a joke! This was hardly a successful family business. If you want to go into debt, invest in this venture! I wouldn't give the owner a dime.

Family business huh? That's a joke. I heard you lost the business. How do you sleep at nite? I wouldn't give a cent to this business, He'll lose it.

It a shame Mr. Cosenza should have talked with Bob Ransoms family members (since it was a family owned business) before he invested in this franching. Oh, would he be surprised !!!!!!!!!!

Did Mr. Robert Ransom mention an additional cost for tearing families apart?

If Bob Ransom screwed over people he knew what do you think he will do to people he doesn't know. Ask around Cape May where the original Mug is. I'm sure there are plenty of people willing to attest to his deceit and dishonesty. Why do you think he went up to Philadelphia. I feel very sad for all parties involved except for Bob Ransom.

Having known the Ransom family for 30 years...it was all bound to catch up with Bob. The family used to be very close, and I am sorry for Ralph, and the employees that were taken advantage of. Bob obviously inherited the ethics of Mom Barbara! Everything eventually washes out in the "end"--how have his indictments been kept out of the local newspapers?!

To BD, You must not know them that well if you think Bob inherited his ethics from his mother. Bob's actions speak only for himself and his wife. Know the facts before you pass judgement.!

Damn Robert! How many people did you piss off in Cape May County?

You wonder how Bob and his wife sleep at night knowing what they did to Bobs parents and still continue to do so
