Wit or Witout opens in the Northeast

Aside from being a scary place for a wimp-ass driver such as myself, the intersection of Frankford and Cottman in Northeast Philly holds the distinction of being the epicenter of drunken World Series revelry. Now it's also the home of Wit or Witout (7352 Frankford Ave., 267-343-7667), the steak stop Mayfair native Nicole DiZio opened in January.

"We took little bits of all the best steak shops in the city, made it into one [shop] and cleaned it up a bit," says DiZio of her 18-seater. They're keeping the menu small — plain steaks, cheesesteaks (melted American, Whiz or provolone), cheesesteak hoagies, pizza steaks and fountain sodas. Connoisseurs who like gauge steak supremacy based on a shop's meat and bread sources will have to do some independent investigation if they want to ID WoW's secret suppliers — DiZio won't name her purveyors, but says her 9.5-inch rolls are not from Amoroso's.

In January, all steaks were $3. This month, they'll cost you $4. Come March, that'll jump to $5 before permanently topping out at $6 starting April 1. (Price includes sales tax.)

Hours: Sun.-Wed., 11 a.m.-9 p.m.; Thu., 11 a.m.-midnight; Fri.-Sat., 11 a.m.-3 a.m. A word to those with whiskey munchies: On those weekend late nights, "we're pretty crowded from 1:30 on," says DiZio.

I have heard about this place for a few weeks now and I finally got around to stopping by. The line was out the door on that day. It was Saturday January 31st, 2009. Considering the line I did not wait all that long. The Steak was excellant. Right amount of cheese and meat. Great roll. The staff was very friendly and curdious. I will deffintly be visiting there more often. Good luck to Wit, hope you do well.

Your new regular,

great place very nice customer service. very fast and efficient. hope it stays that way. i have been in there almost everyday since they opened. one of the best chicken steaks around. lots of chicken. will always buy my steaks there. another good thing is that they use real cheez whiz. most places use the cheap stuff. the beef steaks are good too, and usually i like mine chopped up. good lean meat. good luck hope you do well, so we can have a great steak shop in mayfair. so convenient.

If its in Mayfair its got to be ghettoriffic. I would never eat in that nehiborhood even if the place is clean the people who serve it and customers are not if they are locals. Maybe wit or witout can put some of the area whitetrash out on the curb come trash day. If they open a location in a better area I will surely try.

Very crowded and pricey. Roll was a little doughy, cheese was good, but steak was a little chewy. Steve's and Pat's much better. But I hope they get their act together.

Agree with Joe stock, cheese good, but roll not a good philly roll. Won't last up here...not to our standards

Not pricey at all. $6.00 for a 9.5inch cheesesteak that includes tax. Cheapest around. Great amount of meat on the roll. Roll is not doughy at all, in fact it's hard to gut it if you wanted. $5.50 for a plain steak. Most days they even give you a coupon for a $4 or $5 steak coupon to return. They have a combo special Mon-Fri 10:30am-5pm for a cheesesteak, fries and soda for $7 includes tax. Place is cleanest in town and staff extra friendly. Cottman and Frankford is not the ghetto.. the store is across from the Mayfair diner and it is on the nicest block of Frankford you will find. Real cheese whiz not the imitation, freshly made melted american and slices of provolone. Best pizza sauce around. Great condiment bar all free with the best pickles around. You can call ahead your order and pick it up... 267-343-7667.

I wouldn't listen to others reviews, you must try it for yourself and make your own opinion.
