IN QUESTION: Created by Taste of Nature, Inc. in 1997, these bite-size candies are little balls of actual cookie dough — flour, chocolate and vanilla, but no eggs — then covered in creamy milk chocolate. They come in a variety of flavors, ranging from basic chocolate chip more outlandish red velvet cupcake and cinnamon bun.
AVAILABLE AT: Originally only available at movie theaters, where I discovered them years ago, Cookie Dough Bites are a surprisingly elusive candy. I do know, however, that they can now be found at a number of spots around town, including the Temple University bookstore on 13th and Montgomery, the Dollar Tree on Columbus near Ikea and good old Kmart.
HOW MANY DO WE TYPICALLY EAT IN ONE SITTING: According to the nutritional info there are two servings in each container, but it never feels like it. I tend to devour them and then become angry when I realize they're all gone.
FINER POINTS: These doughy babies were once featured on Food Network's Unwrapped, and you can check out a short clip is on the Cookie Dough Bites website.
Can you ID the head Adam Erace hit on a recent restaurant meal? Vague clue: This place is new and has a nice bit of buzz around it.
Rittenhouse is the neighborhood of the casual lunch, and it's hard to imagine a better setting right now than the secret garden at the new Rittenhouse Tavern (Art Alliance, 251 S. 18th St.). Chef Nicholas Elmi just started serving afternoon eats last week, so as of right now you can and should elbow in among the power attorneys and Art Alliance board members for charcuterie with violet mustard, local fluke crudo, a LaFrieda burger or the soft-shell crab grinder we can't wait to try. Check out the full menu after jump (click to enlarge). Lunch is served 11:30 a.m. through 2:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.
Lemon Hill, BlueCat, Fare, La Calaca Feliz and London Grill are among the participants in the first-ever Fairmount Restaurant Week. The promo, produced by With Art Philadelphia, is sponsored by the Fairmount CDC and intentionally coincides with the splashy debut of the Barnes Foundation. Three-course menus that vary in price from $20ish to $35 abound at the eligible venues; Lemon Hill's Mitch Prensky and Joel Mazigian, for example, are cooking crispy chicken livers with pickle celery, rye toast and celery; pork belly with black beans and clams; and banana/chocolate bread pudding. More menus on the FRW Tumblr.
Notes from the Weekend is a feature that sees the members of Team Meal Ticket compiling all the food/drink highlights uncovered during prime eatin' time, Friday to Sunday. Consider this a place for good deals, great dishes, wicked cocktails, recipe triumphs (and tragedies), bizarro conversations and more. We're eager to share our notes, but especially excited to read yours. We encourage you to leave notes from YOUR weekend in the comments. Have at it! - This past Sunday, an earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter Scale rattled Northern Italy, causing much destruction. Cities like Bologna and Verona, known for the production of Parmesan and Grana Padano cheeses, were left with approximately $230 million worth of ruined fromage by the quake. That's about 300,000 cheese casualties. Six people tragically died due to the quake.
- Andrea Kay wrote this list for Thought Catalog, opining on five European guilty-pleasure snacks. Some, like bratwurst, are tame, while others are downright extravagant. Francesinha ("little French girl") is a Portuguese baked sandwich that involves five different meats, cheese, ketchup/whiskey/Tabasco sauce with an egg on top. That's like five sandos and breakfast all in one.
Critical Mass made note today of the debut of Morgan's Pier (221 N. Columbus Blvd.), Four Corners nightlife capo Avram Hornik's takeover of the old Rock Lobster/Octo spot right on the water. The revamped dockside spot is poised to draw live-music fans in with its promise of live open-air shows/DJs weekly (look out for Dave P and Sammy Slice tomorrow, then Lee Jones and Rich Medina for a Sundae dance party this Sunday), but the food's also a lure. Hornik, along with partners Mark Fichera and Joe Crouse, brought on David Katz of Mémé (2201 Spruce St.) to develop a menu reflecting what'd it be like to hit up a weekend cookout at a chef's house — nothing fancy or over-the-top, but more ambitious and finessed than a ripped-open packet of Dietz & Watson wieners.
