Tim Kweeder, the wine director of a.kitchen (135 South 18th St.) is on a mission, preaching the gospel of Riesling. He's sending off the Summer of Riesling with a line up of eight remarkable Rieslings by the glass beginning on September 1 and running until the 21.
Meal Ticket had a chance to sit down with the Riesling master and taste out way through the starting line up. Kweeder shared his staff training notes with us, a handout that was both downright hilarious and chock full of pertinent Riesling intel, including a spot-on analogy comparing the ever-versatle Riesling to glam-chameleon David Bowie.
Kweeder will have you know that acidity in Riesling allows it to pair with all sorts of unexpected dishes, he swears that it's a steak's best mate. And if you're going for wine geek cred, learning the difference between a Kabinett and Trockenbeernauslese will score you some serious points.
So if you'd like to help Kweeder forever banish the Blue Nun stigma, head on down to a.kitchen and groove on some gorgeous Summer of Riesling pours.
Today on Afternoon Snacks, we're just antsy for the holiday weekend to get started, already!
How often do you get to taste cheese and coffee pairings? Well, some of us seem to end up doing that most mornings, actually. But DiBruno Brothers (930 S 9th St.) has the edge on any of our home fridges when it comes to selection, so it should be fun to see what they come up with for their Saturday Morning Breakfast Club event. Drop by their Italian Market location on Saturday, September 1st between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m., and enjoy a free sampling of Idaho's Doma coffee and a variety of cheeses selected to complement the brews.
A little white lie never hurt anyone, right? Well, that's what the folks at Bistrot La Minette (623 S 6th St.) are going with when it comes to celebrating their fourth anniversaire. In pervious years the celebratory tasting menus corresponded with the restaurant's age ($22 for their second year, $30 for the third) but this time around they're going with another four course $30 prix fixe with an optional (but highly recommended) $15 wine pairing. Due to popular demand, the anniversary menu is going for three days, from September 4th to the 6th. To reserve your place for foie gras, truite meunière and mousse au chocolat call 215-925-8000.
If you’re staring down a holiday weekend full of bumming around at home, it might be a good idea to come up with some supremely weird things to fill the time and distract you from the fact that you’re not at the beach. Something like, oh, I don’t know—a yoga happy hour on the roof of a grocery store? That would probably do the trick.
Hey, guess what Whole Foods Plymouth Meeting (500 W. Germantown Pk.) has going on tonight. Rooftop yoga starts at 6 p.m., and all you need to bring is your mat and a $20 donation to the Whole Kids Foundation (cash or check only). Follow up your savasana with $1.99 canned beer specials and 3-for-$5 tacos from the store’s rooftop taco cart. There will also be free samples of Vita Coco on hand to rehydrate in between working out and drinking. Well, sounds like a solid enough plan, we guess!
Rangoon Restaurant (112 N. 9th St.) has a good selection of rice plates available for lunch, at the beyond-reasonable price point of $6.50 (tack on an extra quarter for beef). If one was looking to do a “cheap eats” review, the smart thing to do would probably be to order and review one of those.
But I can only be what I am, which is to say, “kind of a hog and not good with limitations.” The lunch special menu provides bargain hunters with 18 choices, from bog standard Chinese-American takeout staples to a number of vegetarian options. But only one of those options (pork with mango pickled curry) really piqued my interest, and once I moved on to browse the rest of the menu, there was no turning back.
While it might be par for the course to make on last trip to the shore come Labor Day weekend, there are plenty of good reasons to stay in Philly this weekend, some of them Shake Shack (2000 Sansom St.) related. This weekend the 20th Street outpost of the New York burger institution is serving up their last corn dogs of the year. This Summer only special is a Vienna Beef dog dipped in corn batter, fried up golden brown and topped with Rick's Picks corn relish. Also on the fare thee well summer menu is a "Peach Pie, Oh My" concrete, which is, as you might have guessed or dreamed, vanilla custard with a sliced of peach pie blended in. Oh my.
This month's edition of Amis' (412 South 13th St.) alway awesome Industry Night is going to be a good one. On Monday September 3, Scott Schroeder, sandwich architect, Meal Ticket contributer and chef at The South Philly Taproom and American Sardine Bar is teaming up with Brad Spence for a sandwich-laden picnic party. Schroeder's got sardine sandwiches and pig's head sloppy joes with potato chips lined up and Spence is planning on spaghetti sandwiches with roasted vegetables and bitter greens and roast beef with Barolo wine cheese and caramelized onions. A plethora of pies are rounding out the free to industry folks buffet. A bourbon-orange sherbet punch is in the works.
In other Vetri related news, Marc Vetri, Jeff Michaud, Brad Spence and Steve Wildy are giving Food Republic the weekend off, from Instagram at least. The Crew is taking over photo taking duties for the site. #VetriTakeover is the tag to follow the action.
Center City sports bar, The Field House (1150 Filbert St.) was never really much of a dining destination, but with former Opa chef Andrew Brown coming abroad that's about to change. He'll be stepping up the pub grub with Philly-centric menu items like roast pork sandwiches, a reimagned cheesesteak, pork roll, and that curious but totally awesome combo that is chicken salad and fried oysters. In addition to the new menu, The Field house is pouring drafts from a 40-tap bar with nearly all of the beers coming from the Philadelphia area. Phils fans take note, even though the menu is getting a makeover, those 35 TVs aren't going anywhere.
Today’s Afternoon Snacks features dubious holidays, a little French farce to go with your dinner, and a unique lunch option to consider during the last few minutes of Jersey shore season.
Well, apparently it’s National Marshmallow Day. We’re not sure what that means either, but any excuse to eat s’mores is good enough for us. Head to Frankford Hall (1210 Frankford Ave.) where you can either toast your own, or go with the one-handed lazy man’s option with a Jack n’ s’mores shake. If you prefer your s’mores indoors, the Continental (1801 Chestnut St.) can take care of that. And if you can stomach it, we’re sure there are plenty of places serving up this stuff… but you’re on your own there.
Of all the food trends that have slowly trickled town the Jersey Turnpike to our fair town (speakeasies, ramen), pie is the one I've been pining for the longest. This Saturday, opening day at Magpie Pie Bakery & Boutique (1622 South St), the wait is over, and Philly will finally have something akin to Brooklyn's Four & Twenty Blackbirds. Pie mistress and Cumberland County native Holly Ricciardi will offer seven sweet (three fruit, four custard) and three savory pies to start, as well as "pie fries," planks of crust served with fruity compotes for dipping. Creative twists on classic styles--orange blossom perfumes peach-raspberrry, basil whipped cream caps the lime custard--should have us nice and plump by Thanksgiving.
