Three words: Jewish disco barbecue.
Meal Ticket is off to the Fred Armisen Rose City i.e. Portland, Oregon for an extended weekend so things are going to be a little quiet around here for the next few days. But don't worry, we'll be back on Monday with a special Pacific Northwest edition of Notes from the Weekend.
Mark your calenders and start planning your outfits, folks, the fourth annual Zahav Down the Shore Extravaganza is returning Monday, July 1st. There are a whole bunch of reasons to get excited for this year's party, first off the party is moving outside to the sunny decks of Morgan's Pier and secondly, the theme: KLEZMER INFERNO!
This year's star studded list of chefs includes Mike Solomonov (obviously) plus Nick Macri of Southwark, David Katz formerly of Meme, Bistrot La Minette's Peter Woolsey, Top Chef-testant Jen Carroll, La Calaca's Lucio Palazzo, John Taus of The Corner and Tavro 13's Terrence Feury.
Tickets are going for $85 (get 'em here) and include all-you-can-eat-and-drink buffet and wine and sangria bar plus disco-klez jams from the West Philadelphia Orchestra.
Oh and if you plan on going please feel free to break out your Boogie Nights-est attire.
According to the higher ups at the National Board of Made Up Food Holidays June 12th is officially National Beef Jerky Day. So basically if you're not chewing on a teriyaki Jack Link's or snapping into a Slim Jim, you're totally blowing it.
Not too keen on the 7-11 variety? Head over to Best Beef Jerky a.k.a. the most comprehensive beef jerky review site around where experts discuss the finer points of sodium content, nitrates and various other aspects of jerky creation and philosophy.
Looking for a closer to home way to celebrate National Jerky Day? Well, we've got two local companies drying their own. Righteous Felon Jerky Cartel out of West Chester sells their chipotle and hickory jerkys at the Foodery, El Bar, and Milkboy. And then of course we've got Side Project Jerky, Philadelphia's own jerky for gentlemen, also at the Foodery, Green Aisle and COOK.
And if you're feeling adventurous you can certainly DYO (dry your own) with this super simple, chile-spiked jerky recipe.
Not all Riesling is the cloying stuff Jersey moms tote out to Rockin' Sushi. One of Team Meal Tickets favorite grapes, Riesling carries a range of expressions, from bone-dry to dessert-like. But you already knew that, savvy reader. Broadening the understanding of the often misunderstood wine is Summer of Riesling's mission, and the grape gods are hosting a dinner at Pub & Kitchen (1946 Lombard St.) on Monday, June 17th at 7p.m. The $68 four-courser will be matched with wines by Louis Konstantin Guntrum, the 11th generation owner and manager of the Weingut Louis Guntrum in Nierstein, Germany. And even if you're not a Riesling buff, it's a great excuse to check out new chef Eli Collins cooking. Grilled mackerel piccata with squash blossoms and spatzle anyone?
If you've been waiting for gluten-free, corn syrup-free, preservative-free, rBST-free, certified organic and kosher soft-serve (WHO HASN'T?!) your wait is over. The Lite Choice, a frozen-treat franchise with 22 locations in New York, Jersey, Pennsylvania and Canada, has opened on 1528 Walnut Street. Local partner Jack Lynch has the franchise right to PA and South Jersey and Delaware and has already started rotating through TLC's 80 seasonal flavors (strawberry, Snickers) plus massive toppings bar in Sea Isle City and Collegeville. There are also shakes, smoothies and heart-shaped soft-serve cakes for a low-cal Carvel alternative.
And nearing the five o'clock hour, it's time once again for Happy Hour Watch where we bring you the latest and greatest in post-work drinking news. Today we're checking in at Pennsylvania 6 (114 S. 12th St.), the newly opened Midtown Village spot with old Hollywood vibes.
Their happy hour offerings included discounted drafts, $5 sparkling cocktails and perhaps most importantly, $1 oysters and other offerings from Penn 6's A+ raw bar.
Not feelin' the bivalves? Penn 6 also does a nice job with salty-fatty snacks like hot and sour sauced crispy pig's ears and a board of Benton's ham with pimento cheese and pickled green tomatoes.
This sunny Tuesday is ideal for out-of-doors ice cream enjoyment and on that note we're pleased to announce that the Cedar Parklet (i.e. parking space micro park) is now open outside of Little Baby's Cedar Park Embassy (4903 Catherine St.) Stop in for a scoop of Strawberry Pink Peppercorn or non-dairy Lime Toasted Coconut and stay for the scenic vistas of West Philadelphia.
Calling all cheapskates! Not interest in coughing up the dough for a novelty tie (like this Swiss cheese-inspired nightmare) this year? Well, we've got two wallet and dad friendly options for you on Sunday. The first beer is on the good folks at Brauhaus Schmitz (718 South St.) all Father's day long. Stipulation: This only goes for dads, moms, sons and daughters need not apply.
And if you're looking for something a little more substantial but equally free, head out to Kildare's Irish Pub (locations in Manayunk and West Chester) for free steaks. Yes, that right, a flat iron steak, yours, free. All you've got to do is be a dad.
Now, if we could only find a place giving out free whiskey we'd be all set.
Alright folks, it's just about four hours until the Vetri Foundation's eighth annual Great Chefs Event and we've got to say we're more than a little excited. After all, who doesn't want to rub elbows with the likes of Andrew Carmellini, Tom Colicchio, April Bloomfield and the Animal dudes not to mention more than a few local celebs.
Tickets to the main event are sold out but you can still get into the afterparty at Alla Spina and honestly, the after party is where it's at. This year Adam Perry Lang of Serious Barbecue and Charred & Scruffed fame is handling the after hours eats, Little Baby's is scooping (our bet is that Maryland BBQ will be on hand) and Victory is handling the beers. For more info on how to score tickets to the after party call (215) 735-0200.
