Just a quick heads-up for those of you who enjoy tracking the seemingly endless drama that is the liquor privatization debate: the Inquirer says Governor Corbett will be talking about his plan in detail at a presser in Pittsburgh scheduled for 2 p.m. today. While firm details have been scarce so far, the Inky notes that "Corbett aides have signalled that they want the system squarely in private hands, and that they want to open up the wine and beer market to grocery stores, convenience stores, restaurants and taverns, and big-box stores" in meetings that have taken place so far.
Things are heating up out in Conshohocken for Valentine's Day. At Isabella barisabella.com (328 East Elm St.) chef Michael Cappon has put together a 10-course well-researched Edible Aphrodisiac Menu that's packed with dishes devised to get the job done, if you believe in that kind of thing. The usual suspects - oysters and chocolate - are on the menu but Cappon has also included lesser known love-boosters like garlic (good for blood flow), figs (a symbol of love and fertility) and asparagus (a pleasure booster). The prix fixe is running $40 a head from February 14th to the 16th.
Look, you know as well as we do that there's no shortage of baconcentric recipes in heavy rotation come Super Bowl weekend. Everywhere you look, someone's suggesting you serve bacon-wrapped poppers or deep fried bacon or hell, maybe just feature a bacon-fat-wrestling pit at your party this year.
(Full first-person disclosure: I've actually decided to embrace the insufferable challenge of putting out a mostly-healthy vegetarian spread this weekend, so I'll understand if you just want to write off everything I say from here on out.)
But hey, far be it from us to deny rich cultural traditions or people sending us free recipes that sound tasty. So here you go: three recipes from the folks at Open Air Publishing, who have put out an ebook (available only for iPad and iPhone, boo) called the Better Bacon Book. Click through for the recipes.
Celebrate the pisco sour, check out a must-see boozy cupcake creation, and make plans for Chinese New Year, with today's Afternoon Snacks!
National _____ Days are really only noteworthy when there's a price break in it for us, and so much the better if that deal extends well beyond the one actual day in question. So hey, guys, National Pisco Sour Day is coming up! And that means that Chifa (707 Chestnut St.) will be serving up $5 pisco sours from official National Pisco Sour Day (Fri., Feb. 1) right through a whole bunch of bootleg, nonsanctioned Pisco Sour Days, until Sun., Feb. 10. Above, you're looking at their signature pisco sour, a.k.a the “Diego Vega,” which features the grape brandy known as pisco shaken with fresh lime juice and egg whites.
Collaborative cupcakes and Year of the Snake dinners, after the jump! »
East Passyunk is coming to Rittenhouse this upcoming Monday, February 4th with the second installment of the Four Chefs Dinner Series. This time Nick Elmi is hosting an over the top eight course dinner at Rittenhouse Tavern (251 S. 18th St.) teaming up with Lacroix neighbor Jon Cichon and two of South Philly's finest. Chris Kearse of Will BYOB and Fond's Lee Styer. Each chef is contributing two courses to the meal and the menu looks killer, think Cold Pressed Foie Gras, Goat Milk, Pomegranate, Truffle from Elmi and Abalone, Fermented Fennel, Dill, Prosciutto from Cichon.
As you might expect tickets ($100 with an optional $45 wine pairing are selling quick. To reserve your spot at the table give Rittenhouse Tavern a buzz at 215-732-2412.
There’s nothing like a drab midwinter's day for triggering a homestyle food craving.
Which is why our ears perked up when we heard that the team behind Northern Liberties’ A Full Plate Café is bringing new establishment Cedar Point Bar & Kitchen (intersection of Cedar and Norris) to the heart of Fishtown this February.
Chef Shannon Dougherty has assembled a menu she calls “70’s housewife meets southern comfort food,” starring chicken done three ways (think southern buttermilk and spicy Korean fried) catfish, and jambalaya. Other notables include vegetarian-friendly macaroni, veggie po’ boys, and a vegan kale burger. Wash down your chow of choice with a craft brew or specialty cocktail.
CPBK will be open seven days a week and serve brunch from 10am to 3pm on Saturdays and Sundays.
Get your reservations now: next Wednesday, Feb. 6, Ela (627 S. 3rd St.) will welcome Yards Brewing for a special four-course beer dinner, and it looks like it's going to be great. The $65 prix fixe highlights awesome Yards brews like Love Stout and Poor Richard's Tavern Spruce Ale. Dishes tailored to go with include a surf-and-turf teaming of pork belly and striped bass, and a spruce-brined salmon carpaccio with pine ponzu for the tree-huggers among you. (NB: The regular menu won't be available that night.)
(P.S., even if you're not up for the full multi-course treatment, you might want to give Ela a call anyway: they're taking take-out orders for Super Bowl weekend wings as we speak. The wings are $10 for a baker's dozen, and you can choose from honey-smoked sriracha, truffled parmesan and herb, spicy Thai peanut, miso mustard, or a “regular boring” classic hot sauce version.)

Notes from the Weekend is a feature that sees the members of Team Meal Ticket compiling all the food/drink highlights uncovered during prime eatin' time, Friday to Sunday. We'd love to hear all about YOUR weekend eating adventures in the comments. Go for it! (View past NFTW installments at citypaper.net/notes.)

Today's Afternoon Snacks has a party for lovers of food and books, lobster tasting at Matyson, and a celebration of stouts on Thursday.
Foodie litnerds, get scheming: tomorrow at Penn's Kelly Writers House (3805 Locust Walk), they're throwing an Edible Book Party. Anyone who feels like making something or just browsing is welcome (you can just show up)—the only catch is that your edible offering must relate somehow to books and literature. Decorate a cake in thematic elements from your favorite novel, dream up a cookie flavor that plays on a title, recreate a dish described in a book you love, or whatever you can think of. In fact, based on the rules, we think you'd be fine to carve a book out of a big hunk of cheese. The party starts at 6 p.m. tomorrow, Jan. 29—and yes, there will be prizes awarded to the best creations. (Check out this wrap-up from last year's party if you need some inspiration.)
A big round of applause for Le Virtu (1927 E. Passyunk Ave.) and Amis (412 S. 13th St.) for making Zagat's list of Hottest Italian Restaurants in the U.S. We've been big fans of Joe Cicala's maccheroni alla mugaia and all things Abruzzese and Brad Spence's whole animal approach to specials for some time now and it's great to see these two joints getting a national nod. Head on over to Zagat for the full run down of molto caldo Italian spots.
