Food Quizzo from the SPFC, Anthony Bourdain sticking his foot in his mouth with regard to something Philly-related again, and an impressive menu makeover at Supper, all on today's Afternoon Snacks!
If you're full of more food facts than you know what to do with, here's something: the South Philly Food Co-op is hosting Food Quizzo tomorrow night at The Wishing Well (767 S. 9th St.). Starting at 7 p.m., you and your team will face questions in three categories: Philly-focused, At-home Cooking, and Nutrition and History. The Co-op's been soliciting questions from the local food glitterati (including Adam Erace and Drew Lazor), and Co-op members will get a 15% discount on all food and drink. South Philadelphians, get stoked! The Passyunk Post is reporting that the owners of North Bowl are headed to the corner of Front and Oregon to open up SouthBowl. The details are pretty slim but the space is a former produce distribution center and and a stone's throw from Tony Luke's.
The post got a spokesperson from NorthBowl on the line who said that the new entertainment complex will be home to a bar and restaurant as well as the bowling alley. Plus there's talk of batting cages, arcade games and pool tales.
SouthBowl is aiming for a fall 2013 opening date.
It's almost that time again: this weekend marks the opening of Pliny the Younger season, and you can set your sights on City Tap House (3925 Walnut St.). They're tapping at 5 p.m. this Saturday, Mar. 2—but of course there are plenty of rules to go along with that you'll want to be aware of.
Tickets will be doled out on a first-come, first-serve basis at the Tap House at 4 p.m., and there's a strict one-per-person limit (if you're new to this, expect a line and a quick sell-out). You'll kick over $10 for an 8 oz. pour, and once you drain that you'll have to "settle" for the other great Russian River brews they'll be tapping that day, including Consecration, Supplication, and Sanctification.
This Thursday, Feb. 28, Prohibition Taproom (501 N. 13th St.) is pairing a stellar all-Goose Island taplist with, well, a menu that's wall-to-wall goose. They're bringing in birds from Lancaster County's Culton Organics that will make their way to your table in the form of goosewurst sandwiches, goose and root veggie pot pie, and more. And of course there will be plenty of foie gras, from poutine to a mousse with sour cherry compote for dessert. Each dish will be made to pair with one of five Goose Island brews on draft, including the popular Bourbon County Coffee Stout.
Thursday's event kicks off at 7 p.m. It's all a la carte, and since Prohibition doesn't take reservations, you should get there early to avoid disappointment.
It's a sad state of affairs that most of the talk surrounding chef-in-waiting Peter Serpico lately has to do with a couple controversial lines in a Bon Appetit story on his recent collaboration dinner at Il Pittore. Let's try this again shall we? Monday, March 4th, Nick Macri is hosting Serpico at Southwark (701 S. 4th St.). Get your speed-dial fingers ready.
"The menu is 90% Serpico," says Macri. "We were talking about doing a collaboration, but then decided, fuck it, it's lame. I want to let him do his thing for the night."
Serpico lives close to Southwark and has been hanging at the restaurant "once or twice a week since he moved in," says Macri, who took over as exec chef last month.
The a la carte menu includes dishes like smoked eel croquettes in eel broth, chicken with braised snails and pretzel panna cotta.

This afternoon we've got two exciting collaborations to share with you. First up we've got two of our favorite things coming together this First Friday: bourbon and ice cream. In honor of National Pig Day (yes, that's a thing) the ice cream masterminds at Little Baby's Ice Cream are teaming up with Maker's Mark (90 proof, phew) and serving scoops of Bacon Bourbon Bourbon Vanilla with Maker's Mark Browned Butter, Bacon & Bourbon Blondies. This one time only sundae will be available at Little Baby's World Headquarters (2311 Frankford Ave.) this Friday.
And in other collaboration news, on the last episode of Weekly Wildy, our bud Steve eluded to a dinner the was brewing with Yards, Lemon Hill and Alla Spina and now we've got some more intel on the evening happening next Tuesday, March 5th. The night kicks off at Lemon Hill with a Vieux Carre followed by a 30-day barrel aged Vieux Carre and hors d'oeuvres. After cocktail hour guests will be whisked off in uber fancy Uber town cars to Alla Spina for a two course meal paired with Yards Tavern Spruce ale (aged in the same barrel as the Vieux Carre) and dessert served with an Old Square Spruce cocktail. Okay, we've got to admit that this dinner still has us a little confused but we're pretty sure that the beer, cocktails and cab rides will clear everything up. Reserve your spot right here.
On a typical day at Le Virtù, Joe Cicala will lunch on homemade pasta, Chinese take-out (“cheap and easy to pick up”) or a Cosmi’s hoagie (1501 S. 8th St.), which is favored by another friend of ours, MT guest hoagie blogger Hawk Krall.
But today’s a different animal for Cicala. He’s hanging out in New York, getting ready for an elaborate dinner he’s preparing tonight at The Beard House, which will feature such stunners as (and this is just one item from the enviable menu) house-cured prosciutto, capocollo, lamb cacciatorini salumi, and artisanal sheep’s-milk ricotta with assorted condiments.
To fuel up for the event, the exec chef and his kitchen staff – brothers Pollo and Domingo Sanches and Angela Ranalli – made a stop at Shake Shack for a triple threat:meat, potatoes and concretes. If you were looking for an excuse to stop by the Philly burger outpost (2000 Sansom St.) for a late lunch, this is it.
Philly CowShare's taking pre-orders now for a one-day sale they'll hold in West Philly this weekend. Options are a variety pack (about 13 lbs. total) of beef for $95 or a smaller pork sampler (including bacon, sausages, and chops) for $35—and a portion of the proceeds will go to benefit Philly schools. The actual sale will be held at the Calvary Center (815 S. 4th St.) on Sat., Mar. 2 from 2 to 6 p.m.
With regard to the ongoing hotdog watch that is the life of a Meal Ticketeer: Saveur gives us even more reason to want to visit Denmark.
GQ's Alan Richman dropped a nice little love-bomb on vegan standard-bearer Vedge in his "12 Most Outstanding Restaurants of 2013" story, but did you catch the other Philly nod, leading off a write-up of Memphis' Italian-Southern mash-up?
"The scrapple," said the young waiter at Hog & Hominy, describing a special of the day, "is a kind of northern, Yankee-style dish."
"Son," I replied, "scrapple is a Philadelphia dish, and I'm from Philadelphia. You southerners shouldn't bother trying to get it right."
Richman, who matriculated at Penn and covered the Sixers for the Daily News, went on to praise the not-quite-scrapple scrapple, and the restaurant's inventive blending of cousins. But homeboy knows what's up, and we don't suspect any local scrapple makers need to be watching their backs.
Did you know that March 8 Italy celebrates La Festa Delle Donna, or Women's Day? Although this holiday has roots in the U.S. (something about an 1857 garment workers strike that lead to the formation of the first women's union) we can't remember the last time we received a bouquet of yellow mimosas (the traditional LFDD gift) just for being gals. Over at Life in Italy, a totally reputable source for all Italo-centric info they are saying that some ladies celebrate this holiday by planning wild girls' nights complete with Magic Mike-style male entertainment.
Of course, if you're looking to celebrate La Festa Delle Donna in a more refined manner, Osteria (640 N. Broad St.) has got your covered. Chef Jeff Michaud has brought in five lovely ladies (four wine makers and an olive oil producer) for a paired dinner with some pretty serious wine cred.
