Curious booze-hounds mark your calendars - the first meeting of Cantina Los Caballitos' Tequila Club is happening one week from tomorrow. At 7 p.m. on Tuesday, February 5th The Cantina (1651 E. Passyunk Ave.) will be hosting the kick off meeting for this agave-centric club. The introductory session will break down the basics of blanco, anejo and reposados. Not sure yet on the salt and lime situation but the evening's tequila selection will be paired with bites from Cantina exec chef Mark McKinney and plenty of chips and salsa.
Tickets are going for $35 a head and are available at Cantina or by calling 215-755-3550. For more info or to RSVP check out the event page.
Here's a more touching take on final meals than the last one we featured: Over the weekend, a funeral procession in York wound its way through a Burger King drive-thru. Why? Apparently as a way to honor the deceased, David S. Kime, Jr., a great-grandfather and WWII vet who was also known for his love of fast food and stubborn insistence on enjoying what he liked while he was here to enjoy it. The manager and staff at BK knew Kime's usual order; for the funeral, they prepared 40 Whopper Jrs. for the procession—including one for the deceased.
Kime's daughter laid his last Whopper atop his casket. The whole thing has got us thinking, is there any one food item we love enough to be buried with it? Color us commitmentphobes (we prefer "voracious omnivores"), but we're not sure there is. We figure there have got to be a few folks in this city that might want to take a roast pork sandwich or some FedNuts loot to the grave, though.
If you know without a doubt what you'll be munching on as you make your way into the afterlife, we'd love to hear it in the comments!

Brunch is looking good at Lemon Hill.
All kinds of openings in the works including German beer, pizza, coffee and a Cheesecake Factory.
Foodbooz is telling us that Bufad, the 13th and Spring Garden pizzeria from the owners of Prohibition Taproom and Cafe Lift is going to be softly opening tonight with a menu of wood-fired Neapolitan-style pizza, salads and a few good looking small plates.
Eater has caught word of a new German beer hall opening up at 12th and Chestnut. Heading up the project is Teddy Sourias of Finn McCool's.
We'd like to thank Grub Street for bringing to our attention that chowder shots are now a thing, a totally bizarre thing available at Doc Magrogan's Oyster House in U-City and West Chester.
And as always, The Insider is full of all sorts of juicy news on openings and such. Cafe L'Aube is coming to the 222 Rittenhouse condo building, over in Manayunk Gemelli is switching over to a French menu and renaming itself Bisou and whiskey bar The Goat's Beard is revving up to open on Main. There's a Shake Shack acomin' to the corner of 32nd and Chestnut and finally there's a Cheesecake Factory in the works for Center City and judging by the comments folks are none too pleased about it.
On today's Afternoon Snakcks, we've got a tribute to Spodee, free Left Hand Brewing Co. sampling tonight, and breaking ice cream sundae news!
If you can find your way out to the far reaches of Chester County tonight, Muse (306 Market St., Oxford) is doing a special all-Spodee dinner tonight—they're cooking with the hooch and pairing Spodee cocktails to each course. Look forward to Spodee gastriques, Spodee-braised shortribs, berry-Spodee cobbler and more. The dinner is $55 including pairings, and while there are still seats left, you'll probably want to call ahead before trekking out there.
Check out the full menu, plus free beer and a sundae you really need to see, after the jump! »
Lookin' for someplace warm to spend Saturday afternoon? Well if your idea of warm run more towards chipotles than comforters, head on east on Passyunk to The P.O.P.E. (1501 East Passyunk Ave.) for their annual chili cook-off.
$5 gets you samples of all of the fiery entries and there is going to be a pretty serious chili-complimentary tap list with brews from Allagash, Ommegang and Dog Fish Head.
Judging the competition will be local food celebs including Collin Keefe of Grub Street fame, Suzy Woods a.k.a Beer Lass of Allagash and yours truly!
This week, we've been making our picks for those of you willing to brave the Valentine's Day crowds (our first two top menus are here and here, in case you missed them).
Of course, many people would rather stay in for a romantic, home-cooked meal on V-Day. But if you're short on time or not that skilled in the kitchen, it might conjure images of sharing tuna noodle casserole with your partner, which is admittedly not the sexiest thing we've ever heard. (Though, no joke—if you're not much of a cook but you put in the effort to make your significant other a casserole on the 14th, that's super-cute and they'll definitely love you for it.)
But if you want to eat seriously well at home without the stress, maybe you should just let Jason Cichonski's crew over at Ela (627 S. 3rd St.) come up with the menu and do almost all of the work, so that you can just finish up, plate the meals, and take the credit. The specs: $100 for a 3-course meal for 2 people, including a bottle of champagne. The menu has a firm grounding in the traditional holiday fare (choice of steak or lobster, a chocolate and strawberry dessert), but it's coming out of Ela so you know it's going to be far from boring. Better yet: you just have to order by Tue., Feb. 12 and then pick it up on Valentine's Day—no fretting over having forgotten to make your arrangements a month in advance.
Plus, you get the added benefit of being able to eat Jason Cichonski's food without risking your partner actually seeing Jason Cichonski, which might ruin your chances that night altogether (in case you haven't heard, he's a total dreamboat, way dreamier than mere mortals like us could ever hope to compete with).
No plans on Saturday? Well, that's about to change. Brian Dwyer, the pizza mastermind behind Pizza Brain is hosting WYYLDSTYLE at The Barabry on Saturday along with some of Fishtown's best and brightest party brains.
Free pizza from the Brain and gratis beer courtesy of Narragansett will be served starting at 9 p.m. and WYYLDSTYLE DJs will be spinning throw back future rager jams and projecting videos that may very well feature Richard Simmons, Chewbacca and E.T.
Sounds like it's going to be a pretty wild night. For more info or to RSVP head over to WYYLDSTYLE's facebook page.
When last we checked in with the kitchen at Lemon Hill (747 N. 25th St.), they were adding shareable Sunday suppers to their roster. (Their bar also made a bunch of notable changes for winter; you can check them out here if it's been a while since you've stopped in.) Now, they've nixed those dinners in exchange for an expanded all-day brunch on Sundays. (Update: the supper-for-two deal will still be around earlier in the weekend, and even sometimes pops up on Mondays and Tuesdays.)
Saturday brunch features a few new menu items, and that regular brunch menu will be available on Sundays as well. But on Sundays, the menu will see all sorts of additions, and you'll be able to get your french toast or eggs benedict on at any hour from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
We've gotta say, the new menu items are seriously eye-catching. All weekend long, you can now get crepes filled with coffee pastry cream and whipped cream cheese, topped with coffee cake crumble, or a signature eggs benedict that includes andouille, mustard greens, "dirty hollandaise" (bacon fat and cayenne: better than olive juice), and a bacon-bell pepper jam.
Sundays get even more decadent with a dish of foie, donut bread pudding, apple butter and thyme caramel, and a patty melt that adds avocado, thai chile mayo, and a sunny egg to the standard formula. If that all sounds like a bit much to you, though, there are plenty of simpler selections: the parsnip soup with crispy rabbit confit and pickled apples sounds particularly good.
