On the latest episode of Dude Food chefs Jeff Michaud and Brad Spence are spreading the holiday cheer with two seriously seasonal cocktails. Spence is simmering up a batch of apple cider bourbon hot toddies made with Green Meadow Farms cider and a healthy dose of Knob Creek. According to Spence this is the perfect cocktail to "get your family drunk so they're not as annoying as they usually are." We like your thinking, chef.
Michaud is making an Italian-style eggnog spiked with Marsala, cognac and Everclear. Grain alcohol in eggnog? Why not, right? It's the holidays.
Philadelphia Magazine is revealing their top 50 restaurants of the year today at 3 p.m. But the list is going live right now via Twitter where Foobooz is counting down the top 20. So far we've got The Fountain at the Four Seasons at 20th place, Sichuan haven Han Dynasty at 19, Sicily by way of Jersey Zeppoli at 18 and the newly revamped Fork in the 17 slot.
Who's going to take home the number one gold? Follow the action using the #50BestPHL to find out!
So, look: we're willing to bet that if you're off today, you've just rolled out of bed (or, who are we kidding, leaned over and dragged whatever device you're reading this on into bed with you) with a touch of a holiday hangover. And if you're anything like us, the idea of ordering up a big meal of various things smothered in foie gras mornay sounds oddly appealing, despite your oath last night not to eat again for a week.
Alternately, if you're anything like a healthy person, you've probably got kale salad or raw oysters on the brain. Either way, Pub and Kitchen (1946 Lombard St.) has a Boxing Day brunch menu on today that should set you right; click through to see the whole pitch-perfect thing. Best part: the special menu is actually on until 11 p.m., so even if you don't really see yourself pulling it together anytime soon, you're fine.
By the by, only one thing actually comes smothered in foie gras mornay. So if you do ask for it all over everything on the table, please don't tell them it was our idea, because man what an annoying request!
Hey there, just wanted to extend warm holiday wishes to all of you wonderful Meal Ticket readers. Here's to hoping that this long weekend is filled with plenty of eggnog, Christmas cookies, glazed ham, fruitcake (if you're into that kind of thing), seasonal beers, Chinese food and everything else that makes this the most wonderful time of the year!
On today's Afternoon Snacks, we've got spicy new menu additions, a breath of fresh air and holiday warmth at 10Arts, and a must-view NYC pastry tour (with recipes!).
Starting today, honeygrow (110 S. 16th St.) has a few new dishes on their menu. Look forward to Thai-inspired coconut curry stirfry (shown above with tofu and gluten-free rice noodles), lemon miso tahini stirfry with edamame, chicken, and shiitakes, and 5-spice stirfry with pork and a bounty of veggies over egg noodles. (As with the rest of the menu, there’s plenty of room for customization with these new dishes.)
Hey vegans and vegetarians! If your Christmas dinners are made up of a sad selection of sides due to your lack of love for turkey and ham, think about heading over to Miss Rachel's Pantry (1732 W. Passyunk Ave.) on Saturday night for a vegan pre-holiday celebratory meal. Miss Rachel and crew will be doing their usual four-course BYO prix fixe with plenty of seasonal flair. Here's a look at what's on the festive menu:
Artichoke and hearts of palm 'crab' cake with spiced horseradish sauce
or
Sweet and savory tartlet with cashew cream, coconut bacon and leeks
Sweet ginger golden beet soup with basil oil
or
Crunchy brussels sprouts salad with dijon-citrus dressing, walnuts, sunflower seeds and dried cranberries
Barbecue seitan meatloaf with celeriac mash and lemony asparagus
or
Wild mushroom lasagna with truffled cream sauce
Pumpkin cake sundae with coconut whip
or
Decadent mint-oreo ice box cake
Still on the hunt for last minute holiday gift? Why not treat your nearest and dearest to a scoop of Little Baby's Ice Cream (2311 Frankford Ave.)? Thanks to LBIC's newly minted Pay-It-Forward Board you can pre-purchase the gift of Haley Joel Osment-inspired ice cream awesomeness for a loved one by simply stopping by Word HQ, paying for the scoops and fiiling out the dry-erase board a la “__________ Paid for a __________ For __________ On __________.” Because, after all, who doesn't want to gift or be gifted a scoop of purple peppermint, SAGE cranberry swirl or Speculoos this holiday season.
Hey, remember this? Back in October, we were excited to hear about Pollyodd's "limoncello for the American palate" getting its own storefront. And while we started hearing hopeful opening buzz at the beginning of this month, looks like they're finally opening the doors at 1908 E. Passyunk Ave. this afternoon. (Counter to the original plans reported in our earlier post, in-store sampling has unfortunately been scratched.)
While some flavors of the liqueur has been available in state stores already, may we suggest that having the whole lineup (including the cream liqueurs we're so curious about) in one stop should put it on your last-minute Christmas shopping list?
If you feel the need, the day after Christmas, to decompress from family drama and intense fixation on the material, you're not alone. At the very least, the crew at Memphis Taproom (2331 E. Cumberland St.) has your back with a Boxing Day party that's all about you hanging out in a bar all day and making a few charitable gestures.
The taplist for Dec. 26, which you'll find after the jump, should keep you engaged for a good long stretch. What's more, the Taproom will donate 5% of the proceeds from beer sales to Taste of the Nation's efforts to feed kids in need. And they're also collecting donations of non-perishable food (to benefit People's Emergency Center) and warm coats in good condition (for HIAS Pennsylvania). Bonus: $1 your first drink if you bring a minimum donation of one coat or three cans of food, so dig deep before heading over.
So, the first bit of good news is that we all woke up today, despite some early near-apocalyptic wind and rain that may have given us a moment's doubt. The bad news is that Eater NY brought this NYT item from yesterday to our attention: official report now is that Hurricane Sandy cost 30,000 people their jobs in November in New York City alone, and 8,500 of those jobs were in the hospitality industry. (And keep in mind that those figures don't include hard-hit New Jersey or any other area.)
If you need something to perk you back up a bit after reading that report, StarChefs has a nice love letter up to our city. They're in town checking out our restaurant scene for upcoming awards consideration, but this Letter from the Editor is a nice overview of why they're impressed. Browse around their site a little more for features like this one on making burrata with Nick Elmi.
