If you have yet to solidify your Thanksgiving plans allow us to suggest heading over to American Sardine Bar (1801 Federal St.) where they're going to be partying all night in honor of their first birthday. Along with an Acoustic set from The Jawns and an epic draft list (hello, Pliny the Elder) and the debut of the Sardine Drink Special (a can of Narragansett and a shot of Powers).
In lieu of a birthday cake resident Sardine Bar sandwich artist/chef Scott Schoeder is serving up some sardine-y specials to celebrate including grilled sardines with green olive chimichurri, fried sardines with habanero avocado salsa, sautéed sardines with bread crumbs, parsley, lemon and pickled sardines with foie gras mousse served on toast.
If you’re still thinking about turkey, what gives? Thanksgiving is so tomorrow, which might as well be yesterday. Fact is, you’re already late for fretting-over-the-holiday season. Luckily, the annual Christmas Village is setting up any minute now to help ease you into the spirit.
We kid, of course. In reality, it’s scientifically impossible to feel grinchy when browsing handicrafts in the bracing cold, bundled up against the elements and clutching a cup of hot cocoa or glühwein. To fuel your shopping furor, you can graze your way through German specialties like currywurst, warm pretzels, stollen, and spicy lebkuchen. Did we mention there's funnel cake?
Guys, there's funnel cake. (Getting powdered sugar all over your mittens is a singular pleasure.)
You can check out a preview on Thanksgiving Day from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; the "official" opening day is Saturday, Nov. 24, at which point normal hours apply: Sun.-Thu., 11 a.m.-7 p.m., Fri.-Sat., 11 a.m.-8 p.m. If this is all happening too quickly for you, procrastinators, the Village will be waiting for you in Love Park right up until Christmas Eve. (For all the details, go here.)
Since it's officially cocktail o'clock we thought we'd share a happy hour option with all of you. Lemon Hill (747 N. 25th St.) is introducing a sweet happy hour from 6 to 8 p.m. with $7 glasses of Cab and Chard and $1 off beers which is all well and good but the real excitement here is a $7 cocktail of the day. Al Sotack of Franklin Mortgage fame has created a menu of classic cocktails for each day of the week. So if you're planning on heading up to Lemon Hill tonight a Dark and Stormy with housemade ginger syrup, Goslings rum and freshly squeezed lime juice can be yours for a mere $7.
On today's Afternoon Snacks, we've got limited-release beer gifts, Thanksgiving waffles, and Bukharian resto reviews.
We're not sure we want to think too hard about holiday gift-giving just yet ourselves, but you pulled-together types probably already have. Regardless of your style, Iron Hill's wrapping up some nice gifts for the beer fans in your life. These are reserve bottles of their schmanciest brews, some with their attendant etched glassware, ready to give in festive totes—thoughtful gifts for anyone who likes beer, but convenient enough for last-minute hostess gifts.
So much goes on on Thanksgiving Eve that it's nearly impossible to keep track. So it helps if your Thanksgiving Eve thing has one really sticky riff—something like a catchphrase, if you will. Something like, say, "Marshmallow Sweet Potato Tater Tots."
We don't even like marshmallowed sweet potatos, but it hardly matters. The phrase has stuck like glue. And if that doesn't do it for you, try on "foie gras gravy" as a mantra. Nice, right? We think you'll be able to keep using that one well after the holidays are over.
The point is, both of these things—plus a bunch of other things!— are happening at Southwark (701 S. 4th St.) tomorrow night at 6 p.m. They've got a Thanksgiving-themed menu with help from erstwhile MT contributor/sandwich artist/track suit aficionado Scott Schroeder (speaking of: ASB's birthday party is tomorrow night, too), and Nodding Head pouring beers to suit.
Local hot dog hot shot Hawk Krall has rounded up 13 Thanksgiving-themed hot dogs over at Serious Eats. There are all sorts of cranberry sauced, mashed potato topped dogs to be had all over the country but closer to home Misconduct Tavern's (1511 Locust St.) turkey dog is looking pretty good. The dog is made with whole ground turkey blended with duck fat, tucked into a toasted split-top bun and finished with stuffing, gravy and cranberry mustard. Hawk gives this seasonal dog the thumbs up saying "it has nice snap with a great traditional frankfurter texture, and just the right amount of smoke. It's hard to believe this thing is made out of turkey."
The holiday dog is available now until Thanksgiving and goes for $4.
Curious about Ralph Stollenwerk's new venture? Rhino Bar (1234 Locust St.) is hosting a grand opening bash this evening from 6 to 9 p.m. with super cheap drinks and a half everything on the menu. Cans are going for $2, drafts are pouring for $3 and cocktails are $4. We're psyched to check out Stollenwerk's tweaked bar menu that includes confit chicken drumettes with buffalo sauce and Jasper Hill blue cheese sauce, tempura cauliflower with sambal mayo and a smoked salmon rueben.
Up at the Piazza Emmanuelle, a French-themed bar from Tommy Up is opening up shop tomorrow. Named for the Vaseline-lens series of French erotica films, two of Philadelphia's loveliest bartenders, Katie Loeb and Phoebe Esmon are going to mixing up cocktails both Champagne-based and boozier and pouring a selection of Franco-centric aperitifs, wines and beers. Head over to Drink Philly for more info about Loeb's cocktail program which includes Sex á la Plage.
We'll make this quick, lest any of our Bourdain-weary readers turn their backs on us entirely.
By way of updating last week's post checking in with Tony:
Yesterday we learned that the Philly episode of The Layover will air on Mon., Dec. 3.
And Gawker says they'll have the man himself live chatting with them—and you, if you're so inclined—at noon today. He'll be taking questions from commenters, so if you've got something to get off your chest, you'll want to head over there shortly now.
The folks behind The St. James (30 Parking Plaza, Suburban Square, Ardmore) have promised the addition of lunch service from the first, and just over a month in, they've made good on that promise. The mid-day meal is now being served Monday through Friday, starting at 11:30 a.m.
The pared-down menu leaves the raw bar and starters sections largely intact, carries over a few mains and pastas from dinner, and adds a slew of sandwiches—crab cakes, roast pork, and a lobster roll all join the burger on the new menu, which you can see in full here.
