So I spent the weekend in Montreal, and those of you who follow me (@foodsyoucaneat) know that I had a lot to eat. It was altogether too much of everything that my doctor tells me not to eat. I’m going to attempt to cover all of it here—let’s call this “Montreal’s Greatest Hits”.

Philly Homebrew Club's got another competition coming up this weekend, and this time around it's a Spring Craft Beer and Sausage Fest. The deadline for entering a homebrew in the competition has already passed, but that's OK, because we think the real appeal is just showing up to eat and drink the fruits of others' hard labor.

The party's taking place this Sat., May 4 from 1-5 p.m. at the Philly Homebrew Outlet (1447 American St.). $20 ($25 at the door, but you can prepay right here) gets you an endlessly refillable glass and two sausages—they'll have links from Czerw's, Maglio's, and homebrew club members. Yards is kicking in some brew, and of course you'll also get to sample the entries to the competition, which focuses on weizens, witbiers and saisons. There will also be bands, and if you need more grub, food trucks including the Guerilla BBQ truck and The Cow and the Curd will be on hand as well.

The beginning of May is high season for all sorts of exciting food happenings (margaritas and guac for Cinco de Mayo, juleps for Derby Day, the kick off of National Burger Month) but we'd like to share a May food happening that's a bit more obscure.

In Germany asparagus taken quite seriously, so serious in fact that they celebrate the April to June growing season with a giant Spargelfest (asparagus fest) in the stalk's honor.

Our own little Germany on South Street i.e. Brauhaus Schmitz (718 South St.) is celebrating Spargelfest with a month's worth of asparagus-centric specials courtesy of chef Jeremy Nolan. Think dishes like poached asparagus with Westphalian ham, asparagus soup and asparagus with Hollandaise as well as many others incorporating white, purple and green stalks.

Since we're on the subject of pizza we thought we'd share the exciting news of two new pies debuting at Pizza Brain (2313 Frankford Ave.) today. The new additions are inspired by Vietnamese and Mexican go-tos: banh mi and tacos al pastor. First up is the vegan friendly Cleo Dreamwhisper topped with smoky tofu, scallion-ginger pesto, shredded sweet potato, cilantro and finished with a maple-miso vinaigrette. The Esteban Destino piles on slow roasted pork with cilantro, black beans, mozzarella, jack, red onion, lime juice and jalapeño. According to the Brain these two new pies will be on the menu all spring and summer long. Looks like we'll be making a Fishtown pizza pilgrimage sometime in the very near future.

Walking home via South Street yesterday we spied two ladies walking down the street with some pretty serious slices, some very recognizable slices. With a shiny new storefront and multi-story mural on the building's facade, legendary Lorenzo & Sons (305 South St.) is back in business as of yesterday. A fire shuttered the South Street late night icon nine months back but owner Giuseppe Pulizzi rallied and has go the spot up and running again. He's even going as far as to lift his strictly no topping policy, at least on Tuesdays. L & S is hosting a grand opening party on May 3rd from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. with WMMR's Preston and Steve broadcasting live, a gift gift-filled giveaway and half of the day's profits going to Philabundance.

But grand reopening parties aside, the important part here is that the late night hours will remain the same: 3 a.m. on weeknight and 4 a.m. on weekend.

Mother's Day is almost upon us, and if there's one universal and indisputable fact about moms, it's that they love bacon the most. I mean, I'm actually just talking about my own mom here—but given that SoWe (918 S. 22nd St.) is breaking out an all-bacon brunch for Mother's Day, I think it's now officially A Thing. Drop by on Sun., May 12 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and bring your mom, because she gave you the gift of life, and we're pretty sure buying her a chocolate bacon bourbon milkshake is the least you could do.

Hey guys, just wanted to let you know that Notes from the Weekend is going to have to wait until tomorrow but we've got a good excuse. This week SPTR/ASB chef/Meal Ticket interviewer extraordinaire Scott Schroeder is going to be sharing is totally out of control eating exploits in Montreal. From what we've seen Scott did an A+ job tackling poutine and smoked meat along with over the top tastings at Joe Beef and Au Pied du Cochon Cabane à Sucre. And with Adam weekending in sunny Miami we promise it'll be worth the wait.

We know it's only Monday but it's certainly not too early to start making weekend plans especially when there are burgers involved. This upcoming Sunday, May 5th from 3 to 6 p.m. is the third annual Burger Brawl at the Fleischer Art Memorial (719 Catherine St.), a hamburger throw down for a good cause. The $75 ticket price gets you samples of all of the burgers, drinks from Dogfish and Jim Beam, a commemorative Burger Brawl t-shirt and the chance to see yours truly eat and judge an ridiculous number of burgers. All proceeds go to build computer labs in Philly public schools.

The Insider's got the full lineup of this years competing burgers and we've got to say that we're intrigued with more than a few of this year's offerings (21 total), see the South Philly Tap Room's ham salad topped burgers and George Sabatino's mystery burger.

Want to experience all of the awesomeness that is Burger Brawl? We've got a pair of tickets to give away for Sunday's smackdown. All you have to do is tell us about the burger you'd enter in the Brawl in the comments section below. We'll pick a winner on Friday.

Have you ever been sitting at home scrolling through your itunes catalog or scanning Spotify and thought "man, I could really use a drink right now." Enter Drinkify, our new favorite music-based drinks generator/time waster. Simply enter an artist into Drinkify and the site will come up with a complimentary drinks pairing. Stoked on the new Daft Punk track? Drinkify is matching "Get Lucky" with "The Daft Punk" i.e. six ounces of Bombay Sapphire gin served neat and garnished with an umbrella. Or what about the new Iggy and the Stooges album? That would pair perfectly with a Brooklyn Lager. Predictably Drinkify suggests one PBR served cold to complement Kurt Vile.

We're not shy about our love for Morgan's Pier (221 N. Columbus Ave.)around here and frankly we cannot wait until the May 9th opening day. Zagat caught up with chef for the summer George Sabatino to talk about the menu he's created for the pier and get a first look at the sous-vide-flash-frozen-deep-fried burgers (available in "pink" or "gray" temperatures with house-made American), fries with Frank's Red Hot aioli, various vegetarian offerings and reimagined desserts like a black and white ice cream sandwich and revolving flavor "wooder ice."
