Bassett's, among America's best ice cream places, will be hosting The Ultimate Philadelphia Ice Cream Experience this Saturday July 21st from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Reading Terminal Market. I recommend skipping the other delicious RTM stands because Bassett's isn't the only one coming to the party. Pay as you go for Philly's sweetest frozen summer treats from the host, Miller's Twist, Franklin Fountain, Uncle Dave's Homemade Ice Cream and Rosati Ice. Your kids will love the arts and crafts, live music and games just about as much as they love ice cream. Stop by Center Court to get your fill!

Behold, my Official Favorite Thing to Eat This Summer, Viet-style chicken salad. This jewel-toned specimen hails from Mekong River (1120-1124 Front St.), quick becoming a go-to at Casa Erace. Frizzled shallots, potent fresh herbs, crushed peanuts with a brittle-like sweetness and a punchy, glass-clear dressing redolent of fish sauce and lime elevate delicate poached pieces of chicken, shredded red cabbage and other assorted roughage to the refreshment realm of frozen grapes and ice-cold lemonade. A judicious dribble of Mekong's blood-red chili oil makes it even better. This summer, eat this immediately!

Saturday night saw the hold up of iconic Main Line deli, Hymie's. Two masked men entered the pastrami-ria demanding money and cell phones from customers. Although both men were armed, no one was injured and the deli resumed turning out plates of lox and bagels come Sunday morning.

In other slippery news, two men have been apprehended for stealing used fry oil from Buddakan. What's the deal with stealing grease? Well, as it turns out the recycled grease is turned into biofuel and commands a nice price of $825 for 150 gallons. The grease thieves were caught on video and booked shortly there after.

A little over four weeks ago, Nicolas Fanucci and his old friend, chef Walter Abrams did the (at one time) unthinkable: they opened their 2.0 version of Le Bec Fin (1523 Walnut St.), Georges Perrier’s legendary French restaurant that closed its doors in March.

No sooner than the still-gilded doors swung open came comments good and bad: why was the food and décor still so traditional (hadn’t these gentlemen had the famed French Laundry in their pedigree)? What would become of the much despised basement boite Tryst? What was the story with the tasting menu? Where was the Galette de Crabe?

Angelo Sosa was in town over the weekend taking over the burners at Sbraga and testing out recipes from his newly released cookbook, Flavor Exposed: 100 Global Recipes from Sweet to Salty, Earthy to Spicy. Sosa concluded his $100 five-course meal with Curried Pots de Crème – that's right, curried. Am I the only one who did a double-take when I read that? Although it sounds terribly gourmet, I was quite skeptical about how good a curried dessert could taste... Challenge accepted, chef Sosa.

The folks across the river didn't let pouring rain stop them on Saturday from standing around the parking lot of the Pour House (124 Haddon Ave., Westmont, NJ) getting slodged out of their gourd on seventy libations from thirty some-odd breweries both local and around the nation (as well as international, in the case of the Quebecois Unibroue).

Here are some notes salvaged off increasingly illegible scribblings on the back of a gross cocktail napkin.

One of our favorite things about eternally chic BYOB Matyson (37 S. 19th St.) is the restless mind of its chef, Ben Puchowitz. Dude is constantly coming up with new dishes, be they for the weekly rotating tastings or the main menu. Today brings news of the latter; the fresh summer menu is in effect, heavy on of-the-mo' crops like honeydew (a juicy accent for kampachi tartare), peach (with barbecued pig tails) and watermelon (joining beets, tomatoes and basil on the side of the hanger steak, one of Puchowitz's favorites). We like the brunch-y sound of the pork chop with dark cherries, Swiss chard and bacon-cheddar waffle. Order in!

Over at Cavanaugh's (1823 Sansom St.) Lexi Malmros, the boozy baker behind Beer Cakes is hosting a Magic Hat happy hour from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. with samples of her wares (think strawberry-banana cake made with Lancaster Brewing's Strawberry Wheat) and beers for $3.

If you'd prefer something a little breezier head over to Opa (1311 Sansom St.) where tonight marks the opening of their new Drury Beer Garden. Backyard beers are being served from 5 p.m. to midnight Monday through Thursday and until 2 a.m. on weekends. Look for craft cans and bottles, spiked lemonade, iced tea, and punch and a summery snack menu of crabs, pretzels, and cheese fries.
