They say that you can readily see and taste the difference in quality when food is made by happy cooks. Well, the folks at Hot Diggity (630 South St.) are currently riding a wave of good crowdfunding juju (looks like they're getting that food truck, by the way), and the crew from Nomad recently returned from a damn trip eating their way through Italy, so it's probably safe to assume they're also flying pretty high.
And then they teamed up to come up with a February special for the menu at Hot Diggity.
So yeah, we think we can see how this glorious-looking classic NJ Italian Dog came about. Slow-roasted peppers and onions plus fried potatoes piled on a deep-fried dog—and, of course, that pizza bread. And hey, what luck—it's lunchtime right now!
Banana is the word of the weekend at Magpie, the artisanal pie bakery at 1622 South Street. Pie crafts-lady Holly Ricciardi is featuring a trio of banana-inpired mini pies this weekend in flavors like banana cream topped with cornflake crunch, banana rum frangipane and banana toffee with espresso whipped cream priced at $4 for an individual and $10 for all three.
This weekend's banana celebration is the kickoff of a weekly (weekendly?) series of mini pie threesomes (no comment). The next featured flavor is chocolate featuring a salted caramel pecan and milk chocolate pie as well one with white chocolate ganache and a brandied sour cherry compote.
Last week, yours truly and food editor CR received an email from Pat Szoke, chef at the Industry, about a special menu he was working on inspired by the city's food and drink writing luminaries (my word, not his). "So, if The Industry was to offer a dish called the Russorace, ya know, like Brangelina," asked the bar's PR reps, "what would it be? Let us know." Bet they're sorry they asked.
Why you probably shouldn't ask food writers for a list of favorite foods... »
Well folks, it's just about cocktail o'clock and this afternoon we suggest booking it up to French cocktail parlor Emmanuelle (1052. N. Hancock St.) to check out their fresh crop of wintry drinks. The new menu goes live this evening and there are some fine looking drinks on the list including ones designed to ward off the cold weather like the Earth's Yellow Sun, a blend of Napoleon armagnac, orange & spiced scotch, Cocchi Americano and chamomile tincture and the warming Hot Sicilian Widow with aged rum, amaro Averna, honey, falernum and boiling water. Along with the new menu, Emmanuelle is also offering NA temperance cocktails for the teetotalers out there as well as tailor-made custom cocktails if you'd like to go off the menu and punches made for sharing with a crowd.
A Valentine from the good people at Nodding Head Brewery, new ways with broccoli rabe, and a chili and winter ale competition, all on today's Afternoon Snacks!
This Saturday, gear up for Valentine's Day by enjoying a "liquid love letter" from Nodding Head (1516 Sansom St., 2nd fl.)—they'll be pouring Cherry Doc, Chocolate Stout, Floral Tripel, Kung Fu Phunk, and George's Fault (i.e., "somebody to take the blame when it all goes awry"). The selection's on tap Sat., Feb. 9, and it's pay as you go.
Chili and winter ales and Cheetos with your broccoli, after the jump! »
It took South Philly Review restaurant critic Phyllis Stein-Novack and dining companion/husband Edward a second to figure out the dining situation at the South Philly outpost of Circles (1514 Tasker St.) but once they settled in at the cafe au lait colored dining room, their meal was pretty much perfect.
The fact that food is prepared across the street and carried over on plastic trays could have easily resulted in temperature issues but according to PSN "it was a miracle that the food remained nice and hot."
Thai rolls were crispy treats served with a plum sauce whose sweetness was offset by chopped peanuts. Peppery calamari was not-at-all chewy and splendidly seasoned. Crab and pork dumplings intrigued with a French-inspired dipping sauce. A chicken and duck special dazzled and even the brown rice served with it warranted compliments.
A combination of stellar service and Thai dishes executed with French technique were all contributing factors to PSN awarding Circles an almost perfect three and a half tips of the toque.
This Sunday, February 10th Opa (1311 Sansom St.) is celebrating its second year of Midtown Village modern Greek fare. in honor of this milestone owners George and Vasiliki Tsiouris are rolling out a $2 menu of small plates, cocktails and beer on Sunday. In the mezedes department Opa is offering up surf and turf souvlaki with swordfish and filet mignon, lamb croquettes with feta and spinach yogurt dip and baklava. Drinks-wise there's a menu of $2 cans and bottles including Sly Fox Pikeland Pils, Dale's Pale Ale and Dogfish Head Chicory Stout plus a lemon and dill-infused Anthos cocktail and two buck ouzo shots that may very well lead to some celebratory plate smashing or zeibekiko.
Kidney souffle, veal-and-egg pie, salmon mousse, Charlotte russe, 40 Baked Alaskas... Just a few of the aristocratic delectables served up so far in the two-and-a-half seasons Downton Abbey. Dinner was a big deal for landed nobles like the Crawleys in early 20th-century England, a vibe Chip Roman will try to recreate Sunday, February 24th, during a seven-course feast at his Conshy BYOB, Blackfish (119 Fayette St., Conshohocken). On the menu: oysters with roe and Champagne vinaigrette, roasted quails, floating islands and much more. Reservations are a must for the $100-a-head dinner. Those who just lost their fortune in bankrupt railways need not apply.
Way back in May of 2011 we reported on the upcoming opening of Corner Foodery(1710-12 Sansom St.) and it looks like they're opening up shop tomorrow. Foobooz swung by earlier this afternoon and is reporting that beer shelves are currently being stocked in preparation for a Thursday morning opening.
Along with a stellar beer selection (drink in/take out) the new location is going to be offering up sandwiches and cured meat courtesy of The Corner's John Taus.
