Local roaster ReAnimator Coffee is looking to open a brick and mortar cafe and retail space in Fishtown. Grub's caught word that they're planning on landing at the corner of East Norris Street and Susquehanna Avenue pending zoning board approval. If you're into serious coffee in Fishtown show some love at the rec center (1202 East Montgomery Ave.) tonight at 7:30 p.m.

In beer news Foobooz is reporting that Casey Hughes, head brewer at just over the river Jersey brewery Flying Fish is headed south to Florida to head up his own brewery.

Down on East Passyunk Noir (1909 E. Passyunk Ave.) is shaking up a notable new cocktail, the Caprese Martini. That'd be basil infused vodka garnished with a cherry tomato-green-olive-mozzarella skewer. Consider us intrigued.

And finally if you're looking for another boozier option this afternoon, Barclay Prime (237 S.18th St.) has rolled out a new cocktail menu complete with drinks named after Bond villains.

Meal Ticket World Headquarters is located smack in the middle of Old City but our real home base is Newbold, happily just around the corner from The Daily Meal's newly nominated Best Coffee Shop in America, Ultimo (1900 S. 15th St.). When we first moved into the 'hood we were super stoked that there was a place where you could not only get an expertly pulled macchiato or pour-over but also pick up a sixer of craft beer or just drink a beer in a coffee shop, something that's pretty much unheard of around these parts.

When it came down to choosing the number one shop, The Daily Meal's panelists cited not only quality coffee but a refreshing lack of pretense, focus on coffee ed and the newly introduced line of grab and go sandwiches from American Sardine Bar.

Congratulations to Aaron and the whole Ultimo crew!

Zagat is reporting that Tom and Chris Molieri, the two brothers behind Point Breeze roastery, GreenStreet Coffee (a little background on those dudes right here) are taking over the former Spruce Street Espresso spot at 12th and Spruce.

Nothing solid yet, but the plan is to open up sometime this year and really hone in on the back story of the beans that they're roasting. The Molieri brothers have yet to choose a name for the shop. If you have any ideas head on over to Zagat, leave it in the comment section and if your name is chosen BAM free coffee for a year.

When Cafe Clave, the Cuban coffee shop at 4205 Locust Street shuttered back in December (under seamy circumstances) neighbors mourned the loss of not only good coffee and stand out Cuban sandwiches but also a neighborhood institution, a building that had been in the same family since the 1960s.

West Philly Local is reporting that neighborhood couple Kate Steenstra and Yasser Aiq are taking over the space and reinventing it into Cafe Renata. Soft opening next week, locals can look forward to coffee and cafe fare with South American and Mediterranean accents.

Common Grounds is a coffee shop with a mission. Back in 2010, Andrew Lemon, a youth pastor at Wyncote's Calvary Assembly of God, wanted to make the most of the newly renovated church at the corner of Wayne Avenue and Washington Lane in Germantown. "I had always wanted to do something with that space," says Lemon, who started Common Grounds in September of that year. The premise behind the program was providing kids and adults with something productive and community-oriented to do on Friday evenings. Common Grounds currently showcases local artists, musicians and poets and provides free coffee and light snacks.

"The community embraced us very quickly," says Lemon. "People keep asking when we're going to open a full shop." They're well on their way: Lemon just wrapped up a HelpersUnite campaign (same idea as Kickstarter) to raise funds to expand Common Grounds into a fully functional coffee house. Half of the donations will go toward buying equipment, like espresso and ice machines, while the other half will go into startup costs. For now, Common Grounds congregates every second, third and fourth Friday of the month at 6300 Wayne Avenue. To lend support to their goal, contact them online or send donations to Calvary Assembly of God at 7910 Washington Lane, Wyncote, Pa., 19095.

In dire need of after-dark caffeination this evening? You might want to head to 18th and South at 7 p.m., where some of the best baristas in Philly will compete to make the best damn lattes they can muster. Tonight's competition at OCF Coffee House (1745 South St.) — the first one here since last summer — is April's edition of the monthly battle known as TNT (Thursday Night Throwdown). Watch baristas from all over Philadelphia duke it out for bragging rights, the pot of entrance-fee money, a poster, a bag of coffee and a gift card the nearby Pumpkin Market. As if watching a bunch of dedicated dripsters make foam art isn't enough of a draw, there will also be a Yards keg on the scene.

The other day, I got a latte to go from Le Pain Quotidien (801 Walnut St.). Yeah yeah, I was just there thet other weekend, but I had to make another trip to Jeweler's Row SHUT UP. When the disinterested barista set it down in front of me, a little T-shaped orange sticker covered the sippy spout. Hmm. This was the first time I'd seen such an accessory to the conventional travel coffee cup.

Today was the last day for Strange Brew Coffee (1321 S. Second St.), the Counter Culture-brewing café in the Pennsport 'hood. Bobby Dombrowski opened the shop in May of 2011. He says he'll continue to run his Facebook page and retail coffee beans by the pound.

This coming Saturday, March 10, the team at 1 Shot Coffee (217 W. George St.) is hosting a Buffalo Trace pop-up bar in honor of the launch of Vivo Chocolate Co. Created by nutritionist Juliet Burgh and her husband, Vivo specializes in handcrafted raw chocolates. In its raw, unroasted form, it is very high in antioxidants, vitamin C, magnesium, iron, fiber and Omega-6 fatty acids. It also balances hormones and is good for weight loss. "It's an amazing thing, getting so much nutrition from one fruit — and it really is a fruit," says Burgh of her specialty.

Leotah's Place (2033 E. York St) has been steadily gaining momentum since opened in May of 2010, and they just started offering an ethically sourced alternative to Dunkin' Donuts' "Box O'Joe." The East Kensington coffee shop now sells hefty travelers for business meetings and group gatherings. For $12, you get a 96-ounce box filled with Leotah's direct-trade java (they source beans from Philly's GreenStreet and Cincinnati's Deeper Roots), and for an additional $3, they'll throw in all the necessary fixins, including sugar, faux sweetener and half-and-half from Lansdale's Merry Mead Farm. That's price identical to DD's product, which will run you $14.99 before tax. If you want a traveler, it's best to contact Leotah's ahead of time at 267-519-9031 or leotahsplace@gmail.com.
