WHY RIGHT NEXT TO HUB BUB? what a f*cking joke of a location.
unfortunatly thats where the city decided to put us....it was out of my hands
The campus is huge and the city extends for miles. Mojo Coffee doesn't have to sit right next to Hub Bub. It's bad business decision for Mojo Coffee. There are plenty of other streets and parking spaces.
Obviously it wasn't Mojo's decision, which they are taking the time to point out on all the pages where people are commenting on it. I'm sure it's frustrating for everyone involved. Is there anywhere for customers or Philly citizens to comment/complain that might make the city take notice of their dumb decision? There must be someone in the city bureaucracy that isn't interested in pitting two small businesses directly against each other.
Andy thanks for understanding our position here.....

In late March, we posted about a community meeting that would allow West Philly residents to voice opinions, thoughts and concerns on a potential Starbucks location at 42nd and Woodland. That meeting was postponed the same day. It's been rescheduled for tonight at 6:30 p.m. at 257 S. 45th Street (45th/Spruce). According to a post from baker Michael "Challahman" Dolich, who's opening a bakery just a few blocks west of the proposed 'bucks location, the Spruce Hill Community Association will consider feedback from tonight when drawing up an official opinion on the zoning variance required to develop the project.

Since May of 2009, Britteny "Blew" Lewis has brought her special lattes to the people via her traveling coffeehouse. Now Leotah's Place, named for her mother, has inked a lease on a space at 2033 E. York St., on the corner of York and Coral in East Kensington.
"I've always wanted to have a coffeehouse," said Lewis in a phone chat. "What I really love about them are the personal relationships, listening to one another -- creating a place of comfort." A successful year of tinkering with her portable espresso machine and hosting floating events like Bring Your Words, an open mic night for poets, storytellers and musicians, has inspired Lewis and business partner Kristen Baskin to make Leotah's Place a permanent endeavor.
Exposed brick and plenty of light define the 50-seat space, which Lewis plans to utilize as three rooms -- a family friendly front room with coffee bar and kid's corner will be the "noisy room", the next becomes the "medium" room, full of books and cozy couches, while the farthest-back space is the "quiet" room, for folks who would like to work or read uninterrupted. Food, including sandwiches, chips and salsa, shakes, salads with "fun and tropical" dressings and soups, will take inspiration from the many diverse cultures all living in East Kensington.
Direct Trade coffee from Guatamala is roasted by Ohio roaster and friend La Terza, and the critical element to Lewis' signature "cups of love" lattes. "We use milk from Merrymead Farms in Lancaster," she says, "and the latte is just sweet enough, but you can still taste the espresso."
Event-wise, Bring Your Words will continue, as well as workshops, classes and skill shares. "I want to do community building in this space," says Lewis. "This store represents what I am really desiring for this community and all of Philadelphia."
This sounds great. Can't wait to check it out!
i love the idea of 3 separate spaces laid out by noise level! cant wait til it opens
If you host it the people will come!!! Bring your words is an amazing event! Thanks for that.
Yay! Can't wait to see/chill/support you by buying coffee & snacks in the new space! :) Congratulations, B-Lew!
Thanks for being pioneers and doing the hard work of opening a coffee shop--we will certainly support you and I am sure our artist/musician tenants will too. We have a loft building a block or so away near Coral and Arizona Street. A good, local coffee/food shop has been sorely missing from our section of the 'hood. We are in your corner! Congratulations!
Blew, you are an amazing women! May God continue to multiply your energy, creativity, business-sense, and love! You are an inspiration to me!
You are too, Kristen! I appreciate how you both are putting hands and feet to your love and beliefs! :)
Congrats Kristen and Blew! Can't wait to visit the new space :-)
Thank you for the inspiration that Bring Your Words has given me. I get just as much from your aspirations and achievements. Thanks for thinking the way you do.
OOOOHHH RIIGHT!! Britt, this is sweet. :) I pray and hope God continues to bless this vision and mission that He's given you. At this point, thanksgiving should be the main response. I love you gals.
Congrats ladies! I am proud of you!

Green Line Cafe owner Douglas Witmer just Twittered this:
Do you want a Starbucks at 42nd & Woodland? Community meeting tonight @ SHCA (257 S. 45th St.) 6:30pm to hear their plans.
"I don't have much information," said Witmer in a phone call. "I found out through the neighbors some of our customers work at University of the Sciences and they told me about the meeting. I'm going to it to find out more."
Witmer, who co-owns two Green Lines in West Philadelphia, elected not to speculate on the tone of tonight's meeting, but he did add, "I feel that Starbucks kind of represents a giant corporate identity to people in this neighborhood."
UPDATE: We're now told that tonight's zoning meeting, which would involve the University of the Sciences accepting community feedback regarding a zoning variance to open the Starbucks, has been postponed. We'll update when we have more info.
A nice 2nd Amendment friendly answer to "Left of Center" Constitution Crushing Leftist Academics and other such hangers-on. On the bright side it might be a future gateway to medical pot administration through Obamacare.
One of my favorite things about living in West Philly is that we DON'T have chains. Instead we have businesses owned by people who actually live in the neighborhood.
The starbucks is part of a planned Barnes and Noble bookstore that is replacing the USP current bookstore.
I support a Starbucks at 42nd and Woodland (which isn't in Spruce Hill) if only to get a good coffee early in the morning and not have to wait for Green Line to open. If one is son concerned about chains, put some effort into closing down McDonalds.
"Twittered" ? Really, now... ;P
Ah, the ol' Starbucks in a B&N. I really doubt this will steal many Green Line/Earth Cup/Satellite customers, as they're already loyal and committed to local business. USP students never really mingled with the rest of West Philly, except for pissing off their neighbors with 3am house parties and pharmacy students making engaging in the lucrative business of selling "products".

Angela Vendetti and Jill Fink will expand their Mugshots coffee operation into Brewerytown in late June, when they open their third location at 2831 Girard Ave.
The pair were approached in the fall by building owners MM Partners, who were seeking a tenant who was both green-minded and could help attract other businesses to the neighborhood. âIt's impossible to borrow money right now,â said Vendetti in a phone interview. âMM Partners encouraged us to apply for a Merchants Fund grant, and we found out we were awarded a $50,000 Restore Retail Incentive grant in December.â
With the grant allaying some of the startup costs and MM Partners covering the rest of construction, Vendetti and Fink have a chance to provide healthy, locally sourced food and Equal Exchange Fair Trade coffee to an underserved neighborhood. The space is less than 1,000 square feet, so most of its selection of sandwiches, house-made pastries and other bites will be made in the kitchen of Mugshots at 2100 Fairmount Ave..
âI actually live in the neighborhood, at 28th and Cambridge,â says Vendetti. âI went around and asked the neighbors at North Star Bar, and they seem excited about a coffee shop right in the neighborhood.â
Thanks for writing about this. We are also on the hunt for a Mexican restaurant: http://www.phoodie.info/2010/03/15/help-bring-a-mexican-restaurant-to-brewerytown/?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter

Bobby Logue, who got his feet in the Philly restaurant business working at Old City spots like Sugar Mom's and the Khyber, is aiming for early April to debut Bodhi Coffee, at 410 S. Second in Headhouse Square. "With everything, we're going to be gunning for local, fresh and organic," says Logue, who explains that the café's food menu will "dovetail a lot off the farmers market" found in the Shambles across the cobblestones from his upcoming shop. Expect sandwiches and panini, plus breakfast-y baked goods and sweets from Betty's Tasty Buttons. Drink-wise, they'll be brewing Stumptown coffee, plus looseleaf teas.
Logue, who began specializing in home restoration after leaving the beer bar business, is relying on reclaimed materials for the interior of Bodhi he notes details like black walnut countertops. He's also friends with noted lighting designer Robert True Ogden, who specializes in converting old fixtures into new setups and is working on the lighting approach for the café.

Aaron Ultimo over at Ultimo Coffee (1900 S. 15th St.) already has some pretty bad-ass branding â but now he's looking for someone to submit a design for a new T-shirt. All designs must contain some form of the eagle logo (above), the words "Ultimo Coffee" and can use a maximum of two colors. Send your design in .jpg format to aaron[at]ultimocoffee.com by Feb. 17. If your design is picked, you'll get one of your tees, plus a $100 credit at Ultimo. That's alotta Counter Culture!
And here's an update on the liquor license saga of Brew, Ultimo's boozier half. Last time we checked in, Brew's owner John Longacre told us that they were on course to start offering their mix-a-six craft beer selection on Jan. 30. Well, that didn't happen â even though everything is in order with Brew's neighborhood approval, the PLCB has requested they submit a signed document stating Brew's official hours of operation, and its intent to have an ID-swiping verification machine on the premises. The Board passed on a request to an LCB lawyer to draw up the document, but Longacre is unsure if it'll be ready for the LCB's Feb. 10 meeting. In other words, yet another flaming hoop. "Mind you, I'm president of the Philadelphia Tavern Owners Association," says Longacre, "and I've never seen anything so ridiculous."
