City Paper is a proud sponsor of the first-ever Feastival, a culinary bash benefiting the Philly's Live Arts Festival and Philly Fringe. (Check out our extensive Fringe coverage here.) Going down next Wednesday, Sept. 15, at the Festival Hub at Fifth and Fairmount, the evening brings together dozens of local restaurants and bars (full list after the jump), who'll feed and boozily lubricate hundreds of arts patrons looking to support the Fringe. This is a serious food lover's event, and there are only a few tickets remaining oh and lookie, Meal Ticket's got two that we'd like to give to you! She ate 99 tacos and the crown she won

Back in June, we discussed the insanity that is the Drinker's Taco Challenge (eat 33 tacos in 13 minutes or less), and expressed our general skepticism toward its beatability. Turns out we've severely underestimated Philly eaters just as the Jake's Sandwich Board challenge was toppled, the Drinker's contest has gone down in salsa-glopped flames, not once, not twice, but thrice. On Aug. 20, UPenn grad student Lisel Parillon (pictured; no, we did not Photoshop her to look slighter) won her first challenge at Drinker's West (3900 Chestnut St.), finishing in 12 and a half minutes. A mere three days later, she repeated the feat at Drinker's Pub (1903 Chestnut St.) then this past Thursday, she completed the Triple Crown, wrecking the challenge in a daaaaammnnnn-worthy nine minutes at Drinker's Tavern (124 Market St.). Parillon won a year of free booze at all Drinker's locations, which is extremely well-earned. We doff our caps to your taco dominance, ma'am. To capitalize on all the love their tacos have been getting recently, all three Drinker's locations will be throwing a taco party this Sunday, Sept. 5, from noon to 7:30 p.m. Ten bucks gets you all the damn tacos you can eat (don't try to eat 33 ... just ... don't), and there will be $12 margarita pitches from 5:30 to 7:30, plus dollar bottles all day.

Last month, CP published "Waiting for Good Dough," my story on the current state of Philadelphia pizza. Throughout the research/writing process, I ate dozens upon dozens of pizzas and complained about it like an ungrateful little girl. "Ugh, I can't believe I ate all that pizza!" I whined. "Life is so hard! Seriously, I'm not going to eat pizza for the rest of the summer!" I totally deserved to get called out and I did, by my girlfriend, who pointed out that I was full of shit and that I would probably stay eating pizza despite my threats to the contrary. So shortly before the story came out, we made a bet. If I could refrain from eating any and all things pizza (yes, including Bagel Bites) until Thursday, Sept. 23 (the first day of fall 2010), I would win a cool $100 cash and a meal at a pizzeria of my choice. It is now one month to the day when I can claim victory, and though I've been tempted with slices aplenty, I'm still eligible for the W. Which begs the question: Which pizzeria should I select to host this triumphant dinner, during which I plan on making it rain with my just-earned hundo and then getting thrown out? Doesn't have to be in Philly it can be anywhere within reasonable driving distance. My top two choices currently are the OG Motorino in Brooklyn and Matthew's Pizza in Baltimore, but I'm open to any and all suggestions for transcendent pizza grubbing. Attention Philly meat smokers: You've got a little over two weeks to sign up for 2010's A Full Plate Rib Cook-Off, scheduled for Sat., Sept. 11. The deadline to enter either the amateur or professional brackets for the competition, now in its fourth year, is Sat., Sept. 4. This year's cook-off, which'll be held at the always-lovely Liberty Lands Park at Third and Wildey, will precede a musical festival organized by the Northern Liberties Neighborhood Association. Tomorrow: The Ninth Annual Stephen Starr-Garry Maddox Barbecue Challenge

The ninth annual Stephen-Starr-Garry Maddox Barbecue Challenge takes place this Saturday at Citizens Bank Park, and the event is shaping up to be the biggest yet. The contest, which started out as a small get-together outside The Vet, has grown into one of the largest barbecue contests in the area. Contestants battle it out in three categories (ribs, chicken and "chefs choice") in both the pitmaster (amateur) and restaurant (professional) divisions, and are overseen by a judging panel that includes Phillies alums, local chefs and media personalities. Judges appearing this year include former Phillies players Larry Andersen, Larry Christenson, Greg Luzinski, Bob Boone, Gary Matthews and Terry Harmon, as well as Meal Ticket favorite Kevin "Jersey Kev" Sbraga, chef at Starr's Rat's in Hamilton and current contestant on Top Chef D.C. Perhaps the most anticipated division of the event is "Garry's Rib-Off," where Maddox will give away a grand prize of 2010 World Series tickets to the winner. The event is closed to more competitors, but is open to the public from 4 to 7 p.m. Admission is free, and visitors can purchase sampling tickets in the contest area for a charity donation of $15 for three ticket. All proceeds benefit the Youth Golf and Academics Program, an academic enrichment program founded by Maddox to support children who reside in troubled city neighborhoods.

Wait ... someone BEAT the Jake's Sandwich Board 5-lb. Philly Challenge?!

A few weeks back, we posted about the caloric gauntlet thrown down by Jake's at 12th and Sansom, dubbed the "5-lb. Philly Challenge." The sandwich shack's seemingly insurmountable task dared customers to finish a two-foot sandwich, four soft pretzels, an entire box of Tastykakes, two dozen peanut chews and a Champ Cherry soda in 45 minutes or less. Yesterday, David Goldstein became the first person to destroy the challenge, polishing off the entire haul handily in 34 minutes and 48 seconds. That's him in the middle he appears quite cogent considering the amount of food he just owned, right? along with Jake's partners Sean Stein (left) and Gary Dorfman. Goldstein now has his face on Jake's "Wall of Fame."

This means latte war! Thursday Night Throwdowns take hold in Philly

Philadelphias coffee cognoscenti held its monthly Thursday Night Throwdown (TNT), a fast-paced latte art competition, on July 22 at Spruce Street Espresso (1101 Spruce St.), and Meal Ticket was there to take in the event in all of its pulled, pressed and caffeinated glory. This latest Throwdown brought together 28 competitors to try their hands at winning the monthly title and championship medal. Lovers and Madmen, Ultimo Coffee, Milkboy, Bodhi, 1 Shot, Gryphon Café, Café Clon and the host café were among the shops that tasked their top baristas with representing. TNTs started in Atlanta and have quickly spread up the East Coast, bringing together local, regional and national coffee communities. The Throwdown itself is a tournament bracket-style contest where one barista is pitted against another behind the espresso machine they each get 3 minutes to prep their espresso and milk, and one free-hand pour to demonstrate their loftiest interpretation of latte art. The meticulous judging criteria includes:

Balance and symmetry: dividing lines are clean and even Color infusion and definition: the contrast between the whiteness of foam and the darkness of the crema. and the intention of the design is obvious and clear Use of space: the design fills the cup in an appropriate and pleasant way. The design neither crowds the cup, nor leaves it feeling empty or unfinished. there is harmony between the size of the cup and the size of the design. Overall impression: drink is free of spill marks and cup is appropriately full of liquid. General aesthetic appeal and subjective appreciation.

"Mid-Atlantic Barista Mom" Betty Ortiz of Spruce Street was a perfect host for the floating contest, which was sponsored by roasters Counter Culture and presided over by judge Aaron Ultimo of Ultimo Coffee (top pic, light blue shirt); he ultimately decided whose cups moved on from round to round. This time, Jonathon Amos of Bodhi Coffee (410 S. Second St.) won top honors. It's serious stuff the winner walks away with cash and coffee swag in addition to bragging rights. Above all else, though, it serves as an opportunity to hang with some of the most passionate, friendly food/drink people in the city. Philly-based eating challenges becoming increasingly challenging, preposterous

Whole-hog-hawking Jake's Sandwich Board (112 S. 12th St.) just announced what they're calling the "Jake's 5-lb. Philly Challenge." Challengers must shell out $35 to try their hand at eating a two-foot sandwich (cheesesteak, pork, brisket ... or all three if you really wanna die), four soft pretzels, an entire box of Butterscotch Krimpets or Kandy Kakes (?!), 24 Peanut Chews and a Champ Cherry. If you finish this haul within 45 minutes, not only do you get the stuff for free, you also get your mug pasted on Jake's coming-soon "Wall of Fame"; the first person to beat this bit of Philly-centric masochism will also receive a $100 gift card. This ain't the only Man vs. Food-style challenge floating about the 215, though. There's the Drinker's "33 tacos in 13 minutes" thing that we posted about in June. And then there's the "SHAME Challenge" at the Wishing Well (Ninth and Catharine), which requires big eaters to finish two double SHAME burgers (all told, that's two 8-ounce patties, two hunks of scrapple, four slices of American cheese and two fried eggs), two orders of french fries and two pints of beer in 45 minutes or less. Winner gets his or her $30 meal free, plus a $25 giftcard and a photo of their "Wall of SHAME." Of these three Philly eating challenges, which would you be most likely to take on/beat if any?

The Jake's 5-lb. Challenge is the most appetizing for some reason.  I could easily do the Tastykakes, pretzels, Peanut Chews and Champ Cherry but that sandwich is ridiculous.  

Can someone offer me some sort of dessert challenge?  A few boxes of Kandy Kakes would be, well, cake.

This is starting to get re-god-damn-diculous. 

The Peanut Chews have to be the toughest part aside from the soft pretzels. At least with the sandwich there's some grease to help it slide down.

I could do half the challenge without any problem.
