I couldn't round up any dinner deals for one, but lots of bars are doing singles events. Public House (1801 Arch St., 215-587-9040) is hosting a Love Stinks singles party on Feb. 12th for those who are ready to mingle - entry's free, and they'll be offering some drink specials. There are a bunch of other similar events happening that same Thursday, but this is the only one I found that didn't have a cover charge. Hope this helped!

Jan. 13: National Pastrami Day festivities at Delicatessen

This Thursday, Jan. 13, celebrate National Pastrami Day at hungry man's palace Delicatessen (703 Chestnut St.), which is launching a multi-pronged wave of house-smoked programming. Apparently, the folks who own Tommy Pastrami, a Southern California deli chain that runs 'strami-eating contests, claim that their pastrami consumers are the most formidable in all the 50 states, so Michael Spector is looking to knock them down a peg by hosting an eat-off of his own. Thusly, Thursday will see the launch of the 24-ounce Big Macher, pictured above. (Just for reference, the typical Delicatessen sandwich features between 7 and 8 ounces of meat.) Finish the Big Macher in 15 minutes or less and you'll qualify for the Jan. 20 finals, which'll see eating a 48-ounce pastrami behemoth known only as The Maccabee. Post the best time in that round, and you'll win a fully catered party for 25 people (in Bubby's living room!), plus a gang of Delicatessen tees. If you're not feeling up to the challenge, you can at least snag a $5 regular person-sized pastrami sandwich between the 13th and 20th, too.

There's no place like Di Bruno's for the holidays

??The Italian Market tradition of long lines in front of Ninth Street's favorite locations Di Bruno Bros., Claudio's, their round-the-way neighbor Isgro's goes back as far as the market had been conceived. Old-timers used to pour wine for those in the long wintry line; others brought coffee and cake or whiskey. These may be soberer times for some, but the lines still exist. For me and Glamorosi, the first and longest stop always winds up being Di Bruno's, more often than not because they always get up-to-the minute new deliveries. This week, it was the Petit Jesu from Salumeria Biellese in New York. According to the label, it's made of coarse-ground Berkshire pork with red wine and garlic, takes nine months to age and weighs nine pounds when completely cured, hence the name. Sweet Jesus. (Theres also the L'Amuse Gouda that goes great with the Black Lava Cashews toffee-roasted, then tossed with black Hawaiian sea salt.) The other new thing at Di Bruno's is bossman Emilio Mignucci's announcement that DiBruno's is opening a large stand (1,200-1,500 square feet) in the Ardmore Farmers Market in Suburban Square. "We're looking to have it open by Easter," says Mignucci (above, left). "We actually thought we'd have it done by now, so to move onto the new space on Ninth Street." (He's referring to the long-delayed Di Bruno's wine bar/cheeserie where Pronto currently stands.) For now, let's worry about Christmas and not Easter. There's so much good gouda and salami to be eaten.

New Year's Eve at Cafe Estelle

Since chef Marshall Green cut dinner service from his sun-washed Cafe Estelle (444 N. Fourth St.) two years ago, chances to eat in this bacon-scented solarium after 5 p.m. have been few and far between. Which is why, when Green's rare prix-fixe dinners, like the one he's hosting on New Year's Eve, come along, we lunge for the phone like its the last slice of pizza. Passed hors d'oeuvres will float through the restaurant to kick off seatings at 6 and 9 p.m., followed by five cold-weather courses like Portuguese stew and truffled cannelloni. Sign us up for the spiced bison tenderloin with Brussels sprouts, the entree for the $65 first seating (salmon available for fish-eaters). The second seating, $75, includes a Champagne toast for $75. Devil's Den (1148 S. 11th St.) will be open at 7 p.m. and will be tapping a keg of aged 2009 Southern Tier Pumking and 2010 Pumking. A limited food menu will also be available. The P.O.P.E. (1501 E. Passyunk Ave.) will be open at 6 p.m.; limited food menu, but full-on beer selection (Mad Elf!). 12 Steps Down (831 Christian St.) opens at 7 p.m. The bar at London Grill (2301 Fairmount Ave.) will be serving simultaneously with the restaurant's Thanksgiving buffet feast, from 2 to 7 p.m. Bishop's Collar (2349 Fairmount Ave.) will open around 7 p.m. No food.
