Awhile back we had the pleasure of taking in a screening of The Trip, Michael Winterbottom's BBC-miniseries-turned-movie that sees British actors Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon — playing exaggeratedly grating versions of themselves — screwing with each other, practicing all manner of celebrity impressions (see their Michael Caine contest above) and reflecting on their roles in the entertainment business as they eat at some of the best restaurants in the north of England. It's a very funny movie that you'll absolutely love if you liked Tristram Shandy, but you don't have to be familiar with Winterbottom, Coogan, Brydon or anything involving haute cuisine to laugh. (Liked this flick so much that it actually inspired our late-April tour of Philly's Full English breakfasts.)

Meal Ticket's got a big stack of "Admit Two" passes to a free advance screening of The Trip, scheduled for next Tuesday, June 14, at 7:30 p.m. at the Ritz East (125 S. Second St.). All you've got to do to get a pass (good for two people) is EMAIL YOUR FULL NAME TO RESTAURANTS@CITYPAPER.NET WITH THE SUBJECT LINE "THE TRIP TICKETS." IMPORTANT: If you're planning on going, please GET THERE EARLY TO CHECK IN, as seating is not guaranteed.

Have fun! The Trip comes out in Philly June 17 at the Ritz Five.

UPDATE [08jun11]: Tickets are all gone! Thanks for the great response.

In this week's CP food section, we told you about Forks Over Knives, a new documentary opening this weekend at the Ritz at the Bourse that advocates for a wholly plant-based diet as a means for Americans to combat chronic, widespread ailments such as diabetes and heart disease. Throughout the film, director Lee Fulkerson's two primary subjects, Drs. T. Colin Campbell and Caldwell Esselstyn Jr., discuss in great medical detail the research that's led them to this conclusion, and we meet multiple individuals who've turned their health around for the better by cutting animal protein and dairy entirely out of their lives.

Meal Ticket touched base with plant-based diet advocate Rip Esselstyn, author of 2009's best-selling The Engine 2 Diet and a featured subject of Forks Over Knives (he is Dr. Esselstyn's son), to gain some insight into the film and the movement in general. Rip, a professional triathlete who up until last year worked as a EMT and firefighter in Austin, Texas, currently tours the country with Whole Foods, "spreading the plant-strong message." (He's hosting a screening at the Whole Foods location in Plymouth Meeting this evening.) We caught up with Rip on the phone last week as he ate lunch.

Yo, Irish veg-heads. If you're like me, this week might leave you feeling more blue than green — no corned beef, no lamb stew, mostly boiled potatoes and cabbage. This year, our luck is turning around, courtesy of Philadelphia's gourmet vegan oasis, Horizons (611 S. Seventh St.). Chef Richard Landau's Emerald Isle Tasting Menu debuts tonight and will be available through St. Patrick's Day on Thursday. For $45 per person, your party can enjoy a five-course meal, and, should you feel the need to tap into the true Irish spirit, for an extra $20 you can enjoy a special beer pairing. Check out the menu after the jump. For resrvations, give Horizons a buzz at 215-923-6117.

Jamie Foxx, who was in town over the weekend to attend a listening party for his new album, ate at Daniel Stern's R2L Friday night, hitting up the swanky room late with a friend to enjoy chilled Patron, truffled flatbreads, lobster mac 'n' cheese, lobster paella and several desserts. We're not sure if he special-requested pommes frites.

Need somewhere to get your deal on tonight? Every day during next two weeks, Team Meal Ticket will bring you a daily Restaurant Week pick. We will highlight some of the best deals being offered by officially participating restaurants, as well as some renegade Restaurant Weekers around town. Tonight, check out Dinner and a Movie at Bistrot La Minette (623 S. Sixth St.). From Sunday to Friday for the entire month of September, Peter Woolsey's restaurant is celebrating a deal of its own — three courses for $30 ($5 cheaper than Center City), or $42 with wine pairings. Click here for the full menu. Combine this deal with the ever-so-sexy film screenings running this month in La Minette's courtyard and you have a date night that even Nicholas Sparks would approve of. Showings take place on Monday and Thursday evening through Oct. 28 (here's the full schedule). Tonight’s movie is Christophe Honoré’s Dans Paris, starring Romain Duris and Louis Garrel. Seatings for the movie are at 8:30 p.m., and plenty of tables are still available.

Most of us have danced, boozed or seen a show at Fishtown's The Barbary (951 N. Frankford Ave.), but now you can add dining to your list of fun-as-hell activities to enjoy there. The second floor, dubbed Barbarella, is now open from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m., serving up inexpensive bar food ranging from nachos, pierogies and falafel to churros, vegan sloppy joes, pretzel-crusted mac 'n' cheese balls and a peanut butter/Nutella panini (!). Not only are there mad vegan/vegetarian options, but everything's affordable, ranging from $3 to $7, says Barbary owner John Redden. (Pretzels with nacho cheese or mustard are always available up till 2 a.m.) Eating good food on the cheap while getting your drink on? Yes, please.

Frog Burger, chef Steve Poses' seasonal burger stand on the front lawn of the Franklin Institute (222 N. 20th St.), taking full advantage of its primo Parkway location, will rock out super-extended hours for revelers on Sunday, July 4. The operation usually shuts down at dusk, but on the Fourth they'll serve their complete menu, including booze, until 11 p.m., meaning you can Love Burger it up while taking in the fireworks show and/or booing Johnny Rzeznik. In addition to this they'll have several satellite operations around the Franklin selling water, lemonade and iced tea.

Anyone spot these promosexuals out by City Hall today? They were giving us free hot dogs and shwag from Kick-Ass, which hits theaters tomorrow. (See our review in the movies section.) Probably the first and last time you'll see McLovin plastered on the front of a mobile food cart.

Everyone in Philly knows how much visiting celebs heart Stephen Starr restaurants. So it's no big shock that we're hearing that swoontastic Aussie actress Abbie Cornish (Bright Star) was spotted mealing out at Alma de Cuba (1623 Walnut St.) last night, over scripts, shrimp ceviche, Kobe tacos, verde empanadas, mojitos and sangria. She's in town shooting The Dark Fields with Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro; she and Cooper will film scenes at Butcher & Singer (1500 Walnut St.), another Starr joint, starting tomorrow. Over on our sister blog Critical Mass, Molly Eichel's been doing a helluva job stalking tracking The Dark Fields stars around town.

Meal Ticket would like to direct your attention to a screening of an odd and delightful documentary about booze and music and booze. This Saturday, March 20, at 10:30 p.m., head to the Trocadero to catch Blood Into Wine, a film about Tool/A Perfect Circle/Puscifer frontman Maynard James Keenan's quest to grow grapes in the Verde Valley of northern Arizona. "Wait, it's possible to grow wine grapes in Arizona? Ain't that the desert?" you may ask. Yes, it is very possible, especially when you're Maynard from goddamn Tool.

The doc features a few celebrity cameos — Philly's Tim and Eric appear in a series of fake interview segments with Keenan — but it's adamant in its focus on the musician's passion for viticulture. Even if you're not particularly into wine or particularly into progressive metal, it's worth checking out.

Check out the trailer after the jump. And peep out the food section of this week's City Paper — dropping Wednesday night online and Thursday a.m. on the streets — for a full review of Blood Into Wine.
