Food and Music
Inky music critic Dan Deluca has put together a Beer Week-inspired playlist for your swilling pleasure and we've to got to say it's a fine selection of songs that both sing the praises and lament the bummers that the bottle has to offer. MT's personal preferred tracks include Underworld's "Born Slippy," The Kinks' "Sunny Afternoon" and obviously Black Flag's classic beer drinking micro-anthem, "Six Pack."
Head on over to for plenty of Beer Week ballads from the likes of Neil Young, Merle Haggard, Bruce Springsteen and Nina Simone plus essentials including "There Stands the Glass" and "Sunday Morning Coming Down."
Vice has a collection of seriously beautiful photos by Henry Hargreaves illustrating the edible portion of musicians' riders. Ever wonder what Axl Rose demands backstage? It's a totally unlikely, high-low combo of Wonder Bread and Dom Perignon. Britney Spears' rider asks for a totally bizarre list that includes McDonald's cheeseburgers minus the buns, 100 prunes and figs and a framed photo of (wait for it...) Princess Diana. Busta Rhymes is pretty genius: Guiness, fried chicken and Rough Rider condoms. Click on through to Vice for the full show. We're particularly fond of Frank Sinatra's picks.
Tonight's shaping up to be quite the evening for openings. We already know where we'll be having dinner (ahem, Pizzeria Beddia) but afterwards we're going to be making our way back down south for the grand opening of the revamped Dolphin (1539 S. Broad St.) From the minds of Making Time's Dave P., Best Philadelphian/R5 founder Sean Agnew and the good people behind Union Transfer and Morgan's Pier, we've got high hopes for The Dolphin especially after taking a look at the line up for the rest of March. They've got a super solid line up of DJs six nights a week including Tim Sweeney of Beats in Space, The Rapture's Vito and Druzzi and L-Vis 1990. Here at Meal Ticket, once we're done with all of the restaurant openings, wild tasting menus, cocktail tutorials and all of the other post 9 to 5 events that keep us plenty busy outside of office hours, we manage to make it to see plenty of music in Philly. And on that note, we'd like to introduce another new column.

Since there aren't many days that we wake up not wanting to listen to Action Bronson, we were super stoked to find out that Emynd of Crossfaded Bacon fame has put together a 40 track mixtape for the Fourth Annual Philly Chili Bowl.
Before getting into the awesomeness that is The Hunger Mixtape, we should probably tell you a little about the Chili Bowl. It's happening March 9th at RUBA (414 Green St.) at 5:30. 25 chilis are going to be simmering for tasting and judged by a star studded panel that includes Jason Cichonski (Ela), Angela Ranalli (Le Virtu), Joe Bernstein (BigBite resident judge) and Drew. Okay, back to the mixtape. It's a solid hour of all over the place songs about food with a whole lot of references to chicken: Think The Beatnuts "Fried Chicken," The Meters "Chicken Strut" and Leroy & The Drivers "The Sad Chicken". No plans on Saturday? Well, that's about to change. Brian Dwyer, the pizza mastermind behind Pizza Brain is hosting WYYLDSTYLE at The Barabry on Saturday along with some of Fishtown's best and brightest party brains.
Free pizza from the Brain and gratis beer courtesy of Narragansett will be served starting at 9 p.m. and WYYLDSTYLE DJs will be spinning throw back future rager jams and projecting videos that may very well feature Richard Simmons, Chewbacca and E.T.

There’s a song from A Tribe Called Quest where its protagonist talks about the new school learning from the old school — when “I used to have clout and I used to have a pager.” Now, an old-school DJ can get his mojo going with a whisk, a ladle or an espresso machine. That’s what Jugo Stevcic did when he opened his Café Chismosa (900 N. Fourth St., 609-257-7153) in the old Almanac Market space. Stevcic was once better known as DJ Jugo of Magnetic Mondays and Grass Saturdays at Silk City. He was also a one-time manager of Cue Records on Fourth Street and an over-all promoter of all things grooving.
He took some time off from spinning locally to spinning around the globe — professionally and personally. “After six years in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, and two years of figuring things out here in Philly, I decided to open a cafe in Northern Liberties,” says Jugo of Chismosa, where locals looking for a Latin-inspired fare will find Stevcic and his staff serving ceviches, tortas, quecas (quesadillas), avocado salads, home-made salsas and “the freshest guacamole in the hood.” Along with serving hot local roasts from One Village Coffee, cool drinks like coconut Cubano and all levels of Mexican sodas, early risers from 8 a.m. on can enjoy spinach, egg and cheese sandwiches served on fresh foccaccia bread, seasonal scones and other morning goodies. Thankfully Stevcic hasn’t left his musical past too far behind. Customers can "listen to an LP from my extensive record collection" while chowing down or using the cafe's free WiFi, he notes. Such a host.

The Boot & Saddle, located at 1131 S. Broad Street, will reopen its doors and relight its unmistakable sign in 2013, as decided by the Zoning Board of Adjustment yesterday afternoon. The ZBA has granted its blessing with the provision that the neighborhood not be affected by noise.
Avram Hornik of Four Corners Management, who runs spots like Lucy's Hat Shop, the Drinker's bars, Union Transfer and the recently reopened Ortlieb's, plans on bringing live music booked by R5 Productions to the venue, which hasn't been operational for more than a decade. Hornik has worked with the Passyunk Square Civic Association and the South Broad Street Neighborhood Association (SBSNA) on compromises to avoid disturbing neighbors.
Common Grounds is a coffee shop with a mission. Back in 2010, Andrew Lemon, a youth pastor at Wyncote's Calvary Assembly of God, wanted to make the most of the newly renovated church at the corner of Wayne Avenue and Washington Lane in Germantown. "I had always wanted to do something with that space," says Lemon, who started Common Grounds in September of that year. The premise behind the program was providing kids and adults with something productive and community-oriented to do on Friday evenings. Common Grounds currently showcases local artists, musicians and poets and provides free coffee and light snacks.
"The community embraced us very quickly," says Lemon. "People keep asking when we're going to open a full shop." They're well on their way: Lemon just wrapped up a HelpersUnite campaign (same idea as Kickstarter) to raise funds to expand Common Grounds into a fully functional coffee house. Half of the donations will go toward buying equipment, like espresso and ice machines, while the other half will go into startup costs. For now, Common Grounds congregates every second, third and fourth Friday of the month at 6300 Wayne Avenue. Avram Hornik of Four Corners Management first talked to us about his restoration of NoLibs' venerated jazz club Ortlieb's (847 N. Third St.) in July 2011 — nine months later and the old girl's ready for tunes once more. (It'd been vacant for two years prior.) Officially open at 5 p.m. tonight, the new-look Ortlieb's doesn't have much of a new look at all; it's still got the crimson-lit barroom vibe, centralized stage and old-timers' bar, but plush red-vinyl banquettes in lieu of tableclothed two-tops have freed up the room considerably.
