- The recently revamped Twenty Manning Grill is on Adam Erace's plate this week, and he finds that while many of the comforting, familiar (and trend-relevant) flavors work, the menu could still benefit from a shot of excitement. - My Jello Americans is the name of the awesome local blog that features inspired Jell-O shot creations from Fishtown's own Maureen Sheehan and Corinne Kete. Wish we could down a gang of those deviled egg ones right now. - Tons going on in Feeding Frenzy this week, including openings (Sumo Sushi, Chhaya Café), closings (Kingyo) and various other news (Monk's, M Restaurant, Barbarella). - Saison brunches, teeny-apartment gardening classes, straight-up sausage fests and shots of Patronnnnnn in What's Cooking.

- In his very first review for City Paper (huzzah!), new restaurant critic Adam Erace checks out Kraftwork, the hit Fishtown beer bar from Sidecar owner Adam Ritter and chef Michael Thomas. He spends just as much time raving over the one-of-a-kind interior, created from scratch by artist Andrew Jevremovic, as he does on the solid food and drink. - CSAs are big here in Philly, but many of the hauls don't feature much, if any, meat. Philadelphia Cow Share aims to tackle that niche, offering a bulk beef-ordering option that keeps proximity, sustainability and the local economy in mind. - What's Cooking is full of great tidbits this week for all you food/drink movers and shakers — check out info on a cocktail dinner at Koo Zee Doo, a new night at Varga Bar, a new weekly tasting at Pumpkin and more.

- Elisa Ludwig checks out the Wishing Well in the Italian Market. She digs some of the pub's eats (like the Indo-inspired calamari above), but finds that much of the menu — including the signature, scrapple-topped SHAME burger — ain't up to snuff just yet. - Quickie Q&A with Adam Erace, CP's new restaurant critic and Meal Ticket contributor. Adam doesn't start until next week, but that doesn't mean he can't drop a True Blood reference or two while we're waiting. - Feeding Frenzy notes two openings (choux-tastic Tutti Frutti and Crocodile Philly) and one huge closing (the recently-announced shuttering of Le Bec-Fin). - Eric Henney's got lots of goodies in What's Cooking for you this week, including a Johnny Brenda's clambake, an AC celeb chef shindig and word on a crabby coupla days at fish. - Though it deals more with the spot as a performance space as opposed to a beer bar, definitely check out Brian Howard's cover story on The Khyber, which will permanently pull the plug on live music after this weekend. It's a cool oral history featuring opinions and remembrances from all over the Philly music community.

- This week's cover story tackles the pizza conundrum in Philly — why does everyone think the pizza here stinks? We spend time with a few of Philly's most celebrated dough-stretchers in the hopes of finding out what makes them tick. - Elisa Ludwig checks out Cooperage, the pretty modern Southern eatery inside the Curtis Center. Though it's not a perfect menu, chef Ralph Kane is putting out some innovative takes on typical Kentucky-fried goodness. - The Pennsylvania Restaurant Association held its first-ever food and beverage forum this past Monday, and our Will Stone was on the scene, pow-wowing with former White House chef Walter Scheib and chronicling restaurateurs' concerns with local/sustainable sourcing. - Mumbai Bistro and Nook Bakery and Coffee Bar are brand-new for this week, and we've got word on a bunch more upcoming projects in Feeding Frenzy. - SPTR, fish, Lacroix, Chifa, Mixto and Kanella are all throwing sweet food/drink events in the coming week — let Eric Henney be your guide via What's Cooking.

Carolyn Wyman investigates the origins of the sweet treat and its sometimes-confusing name. - Fish with Fork, craft-booze it up in South Jersey, eat on the cheap in West Philly and more — details in What's Cooking. - Feeding Frenzy has word on this week's big opening, Adsum, as well as plenty of other notes and updates.

- Guest critic Elisa Ludwig takes in the wicked scene and solid, homey Mexican eats at El Rey. "Brilliantly fusing past and present, El Rey is pure velvet-painting kitsch and Mexi-fetishism," writes EL, " ... and the flea-market finds, loud music and rec-room hideaway vibe absolutely deliver the fantasy." - On the side this week is a review of What the Great Ate, a fun collection of famous-person food anecdotes from writer brothers Mark and Matthew Jacob. Did you know 30th POTUS Calvin Coolidge was a pickle addict? Us neither! - Eric Henney previews the week in eats in What's Cooking — R2L's kicking off a summer wine series soon, and World Café Live, the Frenchie-loving Fairmount neighborhood and Philly Beer School have all got stuff going on, too. - Feeding Frenzy has details on two new South Street-area projects — Loving Hut and Cups & Chairs — plus quick hits on a number of pending projects.

- Trey Popp tries food from two completely different chefs at Ro-Zu, the Japanese BYO on Seventh Street in Bella Vista. He leaves blown away by one sushi interpreter and disappointed in another. - Jin-Ja is the name of the at once peculiar and addictive ginger elixir developed by Reuben Canada, a Rittenhouse-based attorney. It's very good. - Eric Henney previews the holiday weekend Percy Street picnic, an Italian wine class and some Chinatown goings-on in What's Cooking.

- Trey Popp checks out City Tap House in West Philly. Their 60-tap beer program is unmatched in the city — but chef Al Paris' menu holds plenty of surprises, too. - Jay's Favorite Sushi Bar is not our favorite — but that doesn't mean that there isn't some solid (and cheap!) fish to be had here. - Hadley Assail breaks down the week in eats in What's Cooking — a seafood cooking class, a bucolic farm dinner and a Journey cover band (?) all have a place this week. - In Feeding Frenzy, we break down new openings, like The HeadHouse, Nana Petrillo's and Call Me Cupcake, plus new from Tiffin and Kanella.

- Brion Shreffler heads up to Chalfont to check out a unique tasting menu from chef Slim "Sam" Ben-Ouhiba of Tutto Mario — it's an Italian restaurant, but the native of Tunis also offers a chef's table highlighting the many-varied flavors of North Africa. - Philly Beer Week is over, but lingering hangovers remain for some local breweries and bar owners. Tara Nurin talks to industry insiders to learn how the 10-day celebration can sometimes have undesirable effects. - Lots and lots going on on the food/drink front — Hadley Assail chronicles dinners, cookoffs, charity events and more in What's Cooking. - Feeding Frenzy has word on rumblings in the restaurant scene — Tweed, Trolley Car Café, The Blue Comet and Barbuzzo are featured. - Over in our Book Quarterly, Hadley Assail chops up Medium Raw, Anthony Bourdain's latest. - Also in the Book Quarterly: Katherine Hill's review of The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake, Aimee Bender's novel about a girl with the odd ability to taste people's emotions through their food.

- Trey Popp peeps Hoof + Fin on Third Street and uncovers plenty of charm at Lucas Manteca's Argentine-inspired BYOB. Short ribs in the summer might sound heavy, but not if they're braised in sangria! Also, look at that sexy pic from Neal Santos — new lens, chief? - You know how there's that one place in your neighborhood you never really patronize, despite how close it is to you? La Va Café was long that place for us. But that's all changed now that we've finally discovered just how good (and how cheap) their soulful Israeli fare can be. - Look ma, food/drink events that aren't Philly Beer Week-related! Hadley Assail breaks down the latest dinners, classes and events in What's Cooking. - Feeding Frenzy has word on new spots, like Brown Betty Petite, Cleo's Portico, Green Line Café and more.
