Was leaving CP HQ yesterday evening and happened upon chef Tyson Wong Ophaso's Tyson Bees truck parked on the corner of Third and Market. Ophaso and his guys Cliff Asavadejpakdee and Jacky Li were in Old City to cater to the crowd checking out Yis "NoseGo" Goodwin's opening at Stupid Easy; Goodwin's the one who gave the Asian street food-dispensing truck that incredible paint job. We scarfed down a cheesy kimchi quesadilla, edamame tofu taco and pork banh mi with a gang of pickled veg before waving the white flag; though there will be some staples on the menu (it'll be tight — usually no more than 10 items), Ophaso anticipates keeping things fresh by switching up offerings on the regular. Tyson Bees' steady post-up is 33rd and Spruce, weekdays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., with weeknights and weekends reserved for roaming the city. They'll have a Twitter account up and running soon.

The cupcake truck competition in this town is stiff as hell! While Buttercream and Call Me Cupcake traipse about the Philly streets doling out their sugary wares and Sweetbox preps for a launch, Samantha Zebrowski is working on Sweets by Samantha, a four-wheeled cupcake operation all her own. Debuting Dec. 1, the recent TCNJ alum's truck will offer a daily-rotating selection of five cupcake flavors and three icings, culled from as many as 30 different cupcake varieties (margarita, PB&J, French toast, chocolate chili); there'll also be the option to get your treats topped with add-ons like cookie crumbles, sprinkles and candy pieces. Zebrowski will also bake vegan, sugar-free, gluten-free and organic options. The Sweets by Samantha truck will be of the roving variety, staking out a different location every day. Follow up on Twitter (@SweetsBySam) for the latest.

T for Temple U. , U-niversity... TACOS! Chris Allen has just pulled up Chris' Taco Stand on the corner of 12th and Norris, next to the Engineering Building and across from the Boyer College of Music/Tyler School of Art on Temple’s campus. An Owl alum, Allen polished his cooking chops at the French Culinary Institute before working at Tinto. Dude also knows his cheese (that is evident by the awesome queso fresco he grates over your taco before handing it over) and has worked as a cheesemonger at Di Bruno Bros. here and Murray’s Cheese Shop in NY.  Chris’ shares a kitchen with a stable of Philly’s favorite trucks, including Honest Tom’s, Renaissance Sausage and the upcoming Far From Home. Chris’ menu is super straightforward, flavorful and cheap. Tacos are $2.50 each or $6 for three; quesadillas for $5 and burritos are $6.  Sides top out at $2.50 for black beans and rice, and Mexican sodas are yours for 2 bucks.  (Check out the full menu after the jump.) Chris' serves from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.; follow Allen on Twitter (@Christacostand) and on Facebook for daily specials, hours and info.

Melange Tea Cart (33rd and Market), which we told you about recently, was involved on a crash on the 21st that left the truck in the repair shop and the mobile tea business closed indefinitely. "At 10:50 a.m. this morning, a truck decided to make a very late left turn directly in front of me at 18th and Washington," owners Boris and Yumiko Ginsburgs wrote on their blog. "To avoid being hit, I was forced to swerve, and the cart rolled over. [...] The cart has sustained major damage that, to be brutally honest, we can not afford to address." Tough stuff. Fortunately, repairs were completed ahead of schedule and Melange is back in action on a test-run today, pouring their select menu of exotic teas and tisanes. (Try the new white teas, like shou mei or bai mu dan.) The cart will be around on Drexel's campus until 2 p.m.; stay tuned to their Twitter to learn when they resume regular hours.

Plenty of Philly barbecue fans were bummed when Mark Coates' Bebe's Barbecue closed its doors at 1017 S. Ninth Street a few months back. But keep faith alive, smokeheads, as the gregarious Mississippi native is most definitely working toward a return. Coates tells Meal Ticket he's in the thick of writing a new business plan and looking for investors; he's in the early stages of hunting down real estate, and says he's got leads on a handful of places, including one on South Street. Once his location is locked in (he hopes it happens by early spring 2011), he plans on operating a mobile barbecue truck out of the space. Keep you posted.

I'd say a good part of the business plan should be "Since we have a giant neon sign that says 'HOT BISCUITS' we should make them every day." I never got to try one because even when they made them they ran out. Did have some other food there that was good, but got tired of walking in and coming out empty.

Bebe's returns, yay!

Bebe's beats any other barbeque i've had in the city, hands down.
Percy Street is a dry, flavorless chump in comparisson to the smokey, juicy, melt in your mouth, fall off the bone goodness of Bebe's. Can't wait to get up on some of that!

Bebe's bbq has the best--awesome chicken, ribs and pulled pork. The pulled pork sandwich is mountain of outrageous bbq goodness. The mac and cheese, scalloped potatoes, greens , cabbage salad are all awesome. I'm looking forward to their return. Best bbq in Philly!

Furnished with gauzy orange drapes and a 14th-century spice merchant’s stock worth of exotic loose-leaf tea, the new Melange Tea Cart (33rd and Market) looks less like a standard Philadelphia food truck than a gypsy tent pitched in a far-flung desert. Boris and Yumiko Ginsburgs are the nomadic healers inside this onetime hot dog cart; the couple and tea aficionados — their blog posts have academic bibliographies! — rolled out Melange on Drexel’s campus in time for the 2010 school year, brewing teas and tisanes that range from well-known (Darjeerling, chamomile, English breakfast) to evocative breeds like smoky Russian Caravan, spicy Lansang Souchong and the Korean roast corn tea known as Oksusu Cha. (Melange also has coffee fans covered with three roasts from South Street’s Cafe L’Aube.) Follow Melange on Twitter, as the cart isn’t always where it’s supposed to be — like today. We walked all around Drexel on their tea trail and came up empty-handed. Being under-caffeinated makes us ornery, then we saw this picture of the Ginsburgs’s dog, Tank, on their website and melted. Awwww! You asked for more adorable dogs on Meal Ticket, you got it.

Current CP news intern Juliana Reyes found herself working the Coup de Taco truck at last week's maniacally attended Food Trust Night Market on Passyunk Avenue. Here is her first-hand report.

It's only 7 p.m., one hour into the first-ever Night Market, and order tickets smother the inside of the Coup de Taco (CdT) truck. We've run out of magnets and space to put the tickets up, so co-founder Peter Berman, who's working the truck window tonight, is hoarding them at his makeshift desk. "How are we doing?" Berman asks Aaron Dessen and Jonathon Zilber, the guys crafting the tacos. "Should I cut them off?" He looks to the overwhelming crush of people waiting for food. The line is crawling around Passyunk Avenue, and Berman worries they'll run out of ingredients soon.

The CdT kids didn't know what to expect of last Thursday's wildly successful Night Market, so they arrived with a limited amount of supplies. But things started to heat up within the first 10 minutes of the market's opening. The guys made frantic calls to their kitchen, only to find out that it was too late — it had already closed for the night. Special events usually call for another set of hands in the truck, and since a friend of mine works at CdT, I found myself moonlighting as a taco-runner.

Photo | Juliana Reyes

When I get to the truck, which is camouflaged in Entourage propaganda due to a CdT/HBO collab, the boys usher me in. I get a quick rundown of the space: Dessen, who's worked the taco line for a year now, shows me where they grill the tortillas and roll 'em up. "It's kind of like changing a diaper and rolling a joint," he tells me. "I know. It's an awkward combination." Hmm. Luckily my only actual responsibilities lie in making sweet tea and sending the food out. Working inside CdT is a bit of a whirlwind experience. Berman chats up every customer as he jots down their orders, while Dessen and Zilber furiously work a fusion taco assembly line, dressing the tortillas in duck sauce and Americanized kimchi (part kimchi, part coleslaw). Zilber's iPod wails Phoenix and Kimya Dawson to eager customers. My job is certainly the easiest, and it's perhaps the most satisfying: Everyone grins at me when I hand them their tacos. One guy actually does a victory dance after I call his name. At just barely 8 p.m., we run out of tacos entirely. The line's still ridiculously long. Berman shouts an apology to the crowd and encourages everyone to visit the truck at 40th and Locust or in LOVE Park, their new once-a-week spot.

Photo | Juliana Reyes

"I am in shock," Berman says. "I can't believe what just happened." The boys sold about 200 tacos in two hours. On a normal day, they sell about 100 tacos in four hours. Berman says he's not as into the day-to-day truck thing as much as he is working these kinds of events. "It's where the glory is," Zilber says. The Night Market is still going strong as the truck closes down. People keep approaching us and asking if we're still selling; the CdT are disappointed in having to close down so soon. Next time they'll be sure to come prepared. Till Bloktoberfest.

We got some of the last tacos and thought about re-selling them to the tacoless for an increased price! I also got a regular customer card, and i can't wait to fill the card up with stamps cause their tacos are delish.

Nice read. It seems insane to me that Coup de Taco and almost all the other vendors weren't prepared at all for the volume of customers. What were they expecting? The whole thing, while cool, was kind of a bust. Needs a lot of work.

For the last two years, Philly native Larry Comroe and his partner Wade Smith have run Far From Home, a comfort food-themed truck, in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Now they're back on contiguous soil and hope to roll out their operation on the streets of Philly within the next two months. The duo has called the Virgin Islands home on and off for something like 25 years, ever since Comroe fell in love with the Caribbean working as a a food/beverage manager for a Marriott in St. Thomas. But now they're back in the 215 to feed Philly a menu of "good, wholesome food, with a little bit of a twist." They'll offer the selection of burgers and dogs they did on the island, but now that they have greater access to ingredients, they plan on amping up their offerings, expanding to an international comfort food selection that will include, latkes, chicken soup to something called a "Brazili-Philly Cheesesteak Dog," a take on a popular Rio street snack that basically fuses the best aspects of a cheesesteak and a hot dog into one sandwich. Far From Home will be a food truck of the roaming variety, and Comroe promises they'll visit neighborhoods that don't usually get much love from the local mobile eats scene.
