Victory/GPTMC to drop Summer Love Ale

Victory Brewing has teamed up with the Greater Philadelphia Tourism and Marketing Corporation (GPTMC) and its "With Love, Philadelphia XOXO" campaign to release Summer Love Ale, a brand-new brew debuting June 4, aka the first day of Philly Beer Week 2010. We're told Victory brews the golden ale with pale malts and German hops, resulting in a well-rounded ale that also has a super-adorable, super-fun label that makes Billy Penn look like a character from Doug (that's not really a tasting note). Summer Love Ale will be poured at P.YT., Fork, Chifa, Nectar and most likely Standard Tap during Beer Week.

Founding Fathers' boozy history lesson

Here's something you can take in during Beer Week 2010 that won't get you buzzed: a quick history session on Philly's beer culture dating back to the Founding Fathers. Ben Franklin's brewing adventures and Benjamin Rush's Moral Thermometer Chart — which basically says control yourself or meet the gallows — are just a few notes in the lesson plan. Brew N History Tours around the Christ Church Burial Ground (Fifth and Arch) take off at 3:30 p.m. each day from June 7 to 11, and tickets run $2 for adults, $1 for students and $10 for groups up to 25 people. Tours are only 20 minutes, people. I'm sure you can tear yourselves away from drinking to replenish those brain cells you're killing off.

June 12: Spinal Tapas does Yards Brawler for Philly Beer Week

Dating back to October '09, we've talked plenty about Tim McGinnis and Brian McManus (aka Spinal Tapas), Philly Kitchen Share's frequent occupants/dinner party hosts. Here's the latest for yas: On Saturday, June 12, the "McMasterminds" will mix it up with Yards for a Brawler Pugilist Style Ale Dinner. Each course will be paired and infused with the brewery's Brawler — McGinnis says its malty, smooth style is one of his favorites, and that he landed on the concept for the dinner after talking with buddy Tim Roberts, a Yards brewer. "A lot of craft breweries try to knock you over the head with extreme flavors and don't focus on balance," says McGinnis. "When I drink Yards, I can taste their balanced approach to their beers." Brawler's low, session-friendly ABV and near-absence of bitter hops also make it a no-brainer for cooking. Catch the menu after the jump. Get while the gettin's good, 'cause there are only 32 tickets total. The all-inclusive cost of admission is $50, and you can get your stubs for either seating — 5 p.m. or 8 p.m. — online. MENU: - "Manhandled" mussels steamed in Brawler - Alsace curly endive salad, fried poached egg with Brawler vinaigrette - Brawler brined, hickory smoked, schmaltz confit wings - Fiorella's pork sausage sandwich with Brawler mustard, caramelized Brawler onions, brave potatoes - Chuck Wepner chocolate cake ("Chuck 'The Bayonne Brawler' Wepner was a boxer in the '70s — not a premier boxer, but serviceable," says McGinnis when we asked him just who Wepner was. "He fought and lost a fight to Ali in the final rounds. Rumor has it that Sly Stallone watched the fight and was inspired to write Rocky. He was also mockingly called 'The Bayonne Bleeder.' Because of this, a friend of mine suggested a red velvet cake, but I thought it was a bit too literal. The cake is an adaption of Guinness chocolate cake.")

June 9: Craft Beer Express Version 2.0

The Craft Beer Express starts its engines once again, this time during the sooner-than-you-think Philly Beer Week. The fleet size has doubled and the route is slightly different (more locations!), but it's pretty much the same idea: drink good beer, get on the bus, on to the next one. This trip departs on June 9 at 4 p.m., and buses continue running till 11 p.m. It's on a WEDNESDAY, but I'm giving you plenty of time to make up a reason to call out of work or convince your boss that he/she should shut down the office and join you. Tickets are $15 plus processing fee at the bus, but you can avoid the fee by purchasing them at any participating bar. After the jump, peep the locations and event details (weren't able to nail everyone down just yet, but we'll update as we do): Kraftwork (541 E. Girard Ave.): "The Moylans invade Fishtown." Kraftwork's Adam Ritter, who owns the participating Sidecar, tells Meal Ticket "they've got a dope arrangement" of Moylan's beers out of Cali, including "stuff that's just hitting the market." Come by around noon to hang out with some of the Moylan's crew. Johnny Brenda's (1201 Frankford Ave.): "It's a Firkin Riot." Talked to owner William Reed, who says there will be at least 16 firkins hammered atop the bar. He's going for a British theme in honor of the English-style casks, offering up traditional British pub fare (i.e. fish and chips) and playing some British tunes (pop and invasion-era genres). This party starts at 11 a.m. so it's another potential first stop before the Express buses start running at 4. Standard Tap (901 N. Second St.): "Weybacher Tap Takeover." Reed, also the Tap's proprietor, says Weyerbacher pours like Blithering Idiot, their barleywine and some flagships will be on the menu. Bar hoppers can also get flights. "We usually don't do flights, but this is a good opportunity to try a few different beers in a short amount of time,â he adds. The Institute (549 N. 12th St.): "Bartender, There's Fruit in My Beer." Co-owner Heather DeRussy says she'll have eight beers on hand that all involved fruit in the brewing process. Look for Lindemann's Pomme, Coronodo Orange Ave. Wit and Otter Creek's QVH). Kite & Key (1836 Callowhill St.): Founders and Yards. Bishop's Collar (2349 Fairmount Ave.): Allagash Takes Over the Taps." Allagash Brewing founder Rob Tod will be on hand to talk up the draft list: Confluence, Victor, Victoria, White, Tripel, Dubbel and Curieux, plus a few surprises. Sidecar Bar and Grille (2201 Christian St.): "Sideswiped by Ithaca Brewing." "It's gonna be gorgeous,â says Ritter. That's all we got. P.O.P.E. (1501 E. Passyunk Ave.): "New Holland brewing presents RockTits with Dr. Joel" Devil's Den (1148 S. 11th St.): "Meet and greet with Pat Conway from Great Lakes and Patrick Rue from The Bruery." Brauhaus Schmitz (718 South St.): "Shelton Brothers Franconian firkins." Co-owner Doug Hager tells us three Franconian firkins will be tapped.

Philly Beer Week 2010 blasts off in just 30 days, and participating venues are starting to tease what sort of parties they'll be throwing this time around. I'm hoping for plenty of creativity from breweries and bar operators, like this Tiger Beat-worthy evening Resurrection Ale House (2425 Grays Ferry Ave.) is hosting Wed., June 9. That's when fans of Dogfish Head's unique brews or just the strapping man behind them will have a shot at playing Trivial Pursuit with Sam Calagione himself. For those less susceptible to Sam's charms, owners Leigh Maida and Brendan Hartranft sweeten the deal by devoting all of Resurrection's 12 taps to Dogfish Head brews, plus 75-Minute IPA on cask. We'll be highlighting top-drawer Beer Week events on Meal Ticket through June 14; search Beer Week 2010 in Categories to see them all.

Gearing up for Philly Beer Week, June 4-13

In just a few weeks, the brains of beer drinkers in town will be all a-ferment, bubbling with enthusiasm for our third annual Philly Beer Week. On Fri., June 4, Mayor Michael Nutter will wield the Keg Hammer of Glory to break into the first keg at the local brew-oriented Opening Tap festival ($45) in the Independence Visitor's Center in Old City. Even East Philadelphia (better known as the proximal towns of New Jersey) is getting into the act this year -- you can take free tours of Flying Fish in Cherry Hill and Iron Hill Maple Shade on Sat., June 5, then be ferried around by free trolley from the PATCO station and pub-to-pub when you hit the Haddon Township Pub Crawl. Opening weekend promises to be sheer madness, especially since it coincides with the 26th annual Philadelphia International Cycling Championship on Sun., June 6. Manayunk venues like Cooper's Brick Oven Pizza & Wine Bar and the Old Eagle Tavern have already planned bike-race parties and brunches. Participating bars and restaurants have already begun loading their events into the Beer Week calendar that lives on the right sidebar of the website. Big Wood Weekend at Standard Tap

Standard Tap (901 North 2nd Street) has got some Big Wood for Philly Beer Weekend. No, it's nothing dirty, just a chance for beer geeks to try a bevy of barrel-aged and wood-smoked brews.

"These are more tasting beers, rather than taking the whole pint and chugging it down," says bar manager Ron Johnson. "All the beer geeks should know what these are."

Beers will be sold in flights, as there is a limited supply, which is all the more reason to start drinking early. Word is Flying Fish head brewer Casey Hughes will also be bringing a surprise beer.

Even better news: if you've got a ticket for the Craft Beer Express (booze bus running to eight different bars all day Sat.), you can hitch a ride to Standard Tap every half hour from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Click the jump for the full list of brews on offer at Big Wood Weekend.

We're only six months away from the roughest, toughest week in drinking challenges (outside of Mardi Gras): Philly Beer Week 2010, June 4-13.

Fairmount brew mainstay Bridgid's (726 N. 24th St.) is celebrating PBW's half-birthday with a series of events that get you in fighting shape for this year's revelry. Tonight (Tue., Dec. 8) and tomorrow (Wed., Dec. 9) offer both drinking and shopping opportunities with Clean Out the Basement Nights. A variety of cellared bottles will be exhumed at deep discounts ï¿½ stock your friends up with some high-gravs perfect for cold winter nights or just swill on location.
