Guess the location of the new Studiokitchen.
Every Wednesday, Meal Ticket pokes around the food blog world to see what's simmering.
- Ever since the days of StudioKitchen, Sholo Olunloyo has been our most noted chef without his own place. Now, he's ready to go commercial with a new venture, which he calls "the un-restaurant." No word on the space that will be graced by Olunloyo's brand of postmodern cooking, but the conjecture is already speeding ahead.
- More big news: Stephen Starr is pulling out of his of A.C. ventures. The man is ditching his two restaurants in The Chelsea boutique hotel, Teplitzsky's and Chelsea Prime, notes Phoodie via The Press of Atlantic City. An ongoing lawsuit accompanies his efforts to bail out of Buddakan and The Continental at Caesars. I guess the gambling and sex workers of the coastal version of Dark City just aren't his thing.
- The Illadelph has a peek at renderings of Daniel Stern's two upcoming spots, R2L and MidAtlantic. R2L keeps the classy vibe of Rae alive, while MidAltantic takes a more casual, rustic approach.
- Get even more Illadelph this week on Grub Street, where he is filling in for the vacationing Kirsten Henri. He reports that Strongbox is reopening on Friday with our favorite early-'90s DJ visiting, while the Arthur Kade-approved Recess is set for Saturday. Better get groomed now if you want to make it past the velvet ropes.
- We know what Restaurant Week means to us, but now the Restaurant Club finds out what it means to owners. They dish with Steven Cook (Xochitl, Zahav), Audrey Taichman (Audrey Claire, Twenty Manning) and Kathryn Faenza (Salento) on $35 meals.

Philly Market Caf
Local heritage alliums
Every Wednesday, Meal Ticket pokes around the food blog world to see what's simmering.
- From lumpy, vari-colored tomatoes to grumpy, tasty pigs, everything we eat has been revived in a heirloom version. Now Philly Market Caf throws out an ode to the heritage alliums available at Headhouse Square farmers market. Gaetano knows you can't cook without alliums, and local garlic is milder and sweeter than any trucked-in Cali bulb.
- Lew Bryson of Seen Through A Glass is unsurprised that the Heavy Seas Beer & Bacon Fest is selling out fast. Click over for the details on the Sept. 19 pig-and-pints event, and to see the Bacon Bra, if you haven't yet.
- Georges Perrier has a rep as a screamer, a tantrum-thrower and the godfather of haute cuisine in Philadelphia. Foobooz diagrams his influence with the Legion of Perrier graphic, visualizing the local chefs who have passed through the hallowed Le Bec-Fin kitchen over the years.
- The Insider reports that Tiffin owner Munish Narula is opening two more locations, both in the 'burbs.
- Food trucks are gettin' trendy, so you know Stephen Starr has to have one. The Illadelph examines Michael Klein's Inky story on the glut of casual, inexpensive concepts from big-name restaurateurs possibly including mobile concessions from the depths of the Death Starr.

Shank's Original chicken cutlet with rabe and prov
Every Wednesday, Meal Ticket pokes around the food blog world to see what's simmering.
- Unbreaded pays a visit to the new, uptown Shank's Original and finds that you can take the chicken cutlet out of Souf Philly, but you can't take the Souf Philly out of the chicken cutlet (or the all-gal staff.)
- The former Valentino on the Square space will become Cicchetteria in October, reports Michael Klein at The Insider. Chef Dan Murphy, late of the Chelsea Hotel in A.C., will throw down "fun, shareable-type food, including pizzas."
- Over at The Restaurant Club, Victor Fiorillo susses out the romantic origins of boutique tonic waters Fever Tree and Q, and locates the elegant anti-malarials around town.
- Grub Street's Kirsten Henri gets the lowdown on Di Bruno's upcoming-but-not-until-the-New-Year wine bar in the former Pronto Space on Ninth Street, from owner Emilio Mignucci.
- It's always a good idea to check in with Chowhound and take the pulse of those avid eaters. This week we've got a lively thread on Philly Restaurant Dishes You Dream About much like this week's Snack Time, it seems the Italians are dominating our food fantasies.
Oh....those gnocchi. thought I'd gone to heaven!!!!

A Food Coma
Panzanella
Every Wednesday, Meal Ticket pokes around the food blog world to see what's simmering.
- A Food Coma adapts traditional Tuscan panzanella (bread salad) with summery vegetables for a meal that is satisfying but not smothering.
- Methinks The Illadelph has a source employed by SRO. That, or Starr's Twitter feed goes straight to his cerebral cortex. The blogger points us towards some facts (Butcher & Singer has been doing about 1,500 lunch covers a week off the interest in their $5.95 burger) and a new deal (the dinner menu has a new, 24-ounce bone-in ribeye for a measly $18).
- Food bloggers in Philly have new competition: the WOT Marketing-created Frankentwat known as Arthur Kade is now intent on breaking lounge openings. Recess Lounge will be "So Private that only the top 100-200 people in the city who are in the A-List are going to be allowed in," according to our too-good-to-need-an-editor model/The Journeyman/extra. Foobooz smashes own fingers in car door to distract from Kade-pain.
- Eat Me Daily notices when ABC has former NY Times food critic Frank Bruni eat and review a Choco Taco. Watch it and try not to run to the bodega to buy one. Just try.
- Finally, Serious Eats previews tonight's premiere of Top Chef: Las Vegas. Look out for befeathered Vegas showgirls, a clam confusion, and Tom C. looking of-the-moment in a vest.

Get it.
Every Wednesday, Meal Ticket pokes around the food blog world to see what's simmering.
- Grub Street Philadelphia has a sneak peek at the menu for the upcoming GHo tappie Resurrection Ale House. Owners Leigh Maida and Brendan Hartranft plan on offering a "lambic-centric" bottle list to complement watermelon rind pickles and twice-fried chicken.
- Django was the toast of the town while Aimee Olexy and Bryan Sikora were at the wheel; Talula's Table is officially one of the nation's toughest reservations. So why can't two of our most talented restaurateurs get a loan to enlarge their fine-dining dreams? The Insider attempts to explain.
- Outdoor dining in this weather? Ugh, I can sweat at home with a 75 cent sandwich. That is, until The Illadelph provided good reason to climb off the stoop: the cooling awning misters at Twenty Manning. Sheer genius from Audrey Claire.
- The Phoodie.info Fishtown HQ is getting deluged with takeout menu fliers. If you're sick of the soggy menu-tumbleweeds polluting your 'hood, follow commenter Mike's lead and download the form for an official City of Philadelphia Circular-Free Property sticker.
- Score one more for The Insider, who never sleeps on a menu sneak peek. Mike Klein's got the menu for the imminent Tiffin etc.; we personally cannot wait for kati rolls and paratha.

Even nicer with ale: Scotch eggs
Every Wednesday, Meal Ticket pokes around the food blog world to see what's simmering.
- Beer Lass Suzanne Woods reveals two of Philly Mag's beer-centric Best of Philly awards. Hints: if a beer were a person, this one would be in fifth grade; the other does nothing to improve the publication's perceived bias toward suburban readers.
- Iron Hill Brewery is running a contest where employees get a shot at seasoning their own saison. Bargoers will vote for their favorite, and the ultimate winner will be brewed in quantity. Lew Bryson at Seen Through A Glass approves.
- The Femme Fermental tosses appreciative roses at Best of Philly sommelier winner Melissa Monosoff, whose chill style and reasonably-priced reccos have endeared her to patrons at the newly renovated Savona/Bar Savona in Gulph Mills.
- Philly Mag is rolling out their biggest issue with guns blazing! Everyone with a laptop is linking their Best of Philly decisions, then they reveal on the Restaurant Club blog where you can get poutine, Montreal's signature drunk food, in Philly.
- Wrapping up this week's boozy Snack Time edition is I Am Beer Wise, who whisks you through two of Jersey's best beer bars in a single afternoon. He also scores the latest bar-snack-of-the-moment, a Scotch egg a deep-fried, sausage-wrapped little number guaranteed to appear on Philly menus for fall.
The Whip Tavern has been doing a great Scotch egg since they opened. A little far flung (okay, a lot). But worth the trip. http://www.phillymag.com/restaurants/articles/taste_in_search_of_bar_snacks/
Intriguing. The scotch eggs. Never heard of 'em.

-- Adam Erace at Blogalicious hips us to lavish locavore chef Jim Burke's newest juicy treat at James: wineberries. Burke "bejewels his foie gras terrine over brioche with honey-duck jus" with the raspberry relative, whose season will be over by the time you finish reading this sentence.

The Curious Georgia
Every Wednesday, Meal Ticket pokes around the food blog world to see what's simmering.
-- Purists may scoff, but Beer Lass Suzanne Woods welcomes a new brew trend with open arms (and mouth)-- beer cocktails. Suz touts Smokin' Betty's entry, the Curious Georgia: Allagash White and peach schnapps prettied up with a ginger-syrup soaked peach garnish makes for a very Happy Hour.

The spread at SquareBurger
Every Wednesday, Meal Ticket pokes around the food blog world to see what's simmering.
- Phoodie.info samples Stephen Starr's SquareBurger, and finds some satisfying and affordable, if not groundbreaking, park fare. The Butterscotch Krimpet Cake Shake, however, is something else entirely.
- More big news on the Starr SquareBurger front: The fries are frozen, and Grub Street Philadelphia gets the dirty details from Starr catering director Simon Powles. Hey, if it's good enough for Thomas Keller...
- Beer Lass Suzanne Woods clues you in on Flying Fish Exit 11, debuting tonight at Swift Half and Varga Bar. Taste a wheat beer with more than a little hop-to tonight, and look for Meal Ticket's review of the stuff that has M.A.D.D.'s knickers in a twist tomorrow.
--The Insider has the scoop on Fond, yet another restaurant opening on East Passyunk Ave. Check out the boldface names from Le Bec and Lacroix headed down Souf.
-- Hawk Krall of Drawing For Food pimps the latest in his hot dog painting series for Serious Eats, the Tijuana Dog. He also begs the question: why no bacon-wrapped Mexican hot dogs, like those commonly sold late night outside of bars in L.A., in Philly?
Just gave Squareburger a whirl- gotta say I had high hopes and they were D-A-S-H-E-D. First off⦠a good ten minute wait for a milkshake, with burger in hand? and only 2 other customers at the whole place?? yikes. Asked for NO ketchup and NO onions. Needless to say after waiting for 10 minutes just to get the accompanying beverage, I wasnât about to wait all over again after discovering my burger slathered in ketchup⦠gross No vanilla ice cream for the cake shake, so they subbed chocolate which was cool exceptâ¦.. THEY FORGOT THE CAKE! lame. $9 for a half wrong burger and a completely FAILed milkshake. Still, I choked that jawn down quick as hell. I will give you a second chance, squareburger. But fail me again and itâs CURTAINS.
Wow, 0for2, you must have a lot of time on your hands to leave this same comment on 4 different blogs. You went on the second day of operation -- give it another shot! I was there today, and the lines were there, but not too long, and the food is great. They went through 72 gallons of ice cream on Wednesday. Lighten up.
doesn't it say right there they're going to give it a second shot? fools! wendy's forever!!

-- Stephen Starr's been on a pizza-finding mission for the past few weeks, along with Inky food writer Rick Nichols, and the NY Times took notice, according to The Illadelph. The mega-restaurateur dropped some know-how on the Times, in case they didn't know opening a pizza parlor is a shade easier than a 400-seat Asian-fusion palace.
-- The Swift Half at the Piazza at Schmidt's opened with a limited menu; now they have expanded things significantly, along with dropping almost all the prices, says Foobooz. Click over to check out the new offerings.
