In totally made up food holidays news we'd like to wish all of you a very happy National Martini Day. Although the origins of this classy cocktail are a little murky (New York's Knickerbocker Hotel and San Francisco's Court of Historical Review have been duking it out for ages), we'd like to go ahead and give all of you the okay to go out for that Mad Men-style lunch, just don't end up back at the office like Roger.
Chocolate Torrone semifreddo... Fried zucchini flowers with saffron Spumoni... Grilled polenta with wine-drenched roasted peaches... Sweet tooth piqued yet? You can learn to make all these from Le Virtu dessert mistress Angela Ranalli, who's holding classes on the restaurant's new patio one Sunday a month this summer. June 30th focuses on chocolate, July 21st on fritters and granita, August 18th on grilled desserts. Each interactive class is limited to 15 students, costs $65 and goes from noon till 2. When Franklin Mortgage & Investment Co. (112 S. 18th St.) opened four years ago today, it ushered in a new era of cocktails in Philly. Al Sotack and his crew were doing what no one else here was doing, making inventive original drinks with house-made tinctures, artisanal bitters and boutique liquor while the rest of the city was still pulling itself out of a lingering pomegranate martini hangover. Now, any bar or restaurant worth its oleo saccharum has fine cocktails on the menu, but the Franklin still makes some of the best. The Kitchn fields a lot of questions from readers, and somehow they always seem to get answered, even if the question is "How can I make my own Totino's Party Pizza?" What are the odds that many readers of the Kitchn have even eaten a Totino's Party Pizza? (Full disclosure: even I have never eaten a Totino's Party Pizza. What makes it so party? Isn't almost any pizza "party pizza"? I feel like Andrew WK would side with me on this?)
All-you-can-eat eating dining establishments generally run from the guilty pleasure side of things (Chinese buffet) to the downright scary (AYCE sushi, Sizzler) but tonight we've got a much classier option for you.
This evening Cuba Libre (10 S. 2nd St.), little Havana in Old City is rolling out Tapas Tuesdays. For $26.95 a head diners can graze their way through an all-you-can-eat selection of empanadas, barbecue-glazed Barrio Chino chicken wings, pork belly skewers and papas rellenas. Feel free to tack on some ceviche for $2 more.
And if you're going to stop in for AYCE Tapas Tuesdays, may we suggest getting in before 7 p.m. to take advantage of Caippy Hour for $5 caipirinhas and caipiroskas.
There is no shortage of frozen dessert options in our fair city with Reading Terminal pioneers Bassett's, Old City's period-perfect Franklin Fountain and much loved relative newcomers Little Baby's, Capogiro and Weckerlys. Don't even get us started on water ice.
We'd like to extend a hearty welcome to the newest addition to the summertime dessert scene, Lil' Pop Shop, we just opened the doors to their South Street outpost (534 S. 4th St.).
Owner Jeanne Chang has brought her think-y, totally refreshing line of popsicles south and is now serving a rotating selection that includes pineapple-basil, goat cheese with cherries and the latest, red hot mango chile pepper made with Honest Tom's habanero salsa, all made upstairs from the storefront.

This month's Night Market is headed north this Thursday, setting up shop in West Oak Lane, 72nd and Ogontz Lane to be exact. Expect a pretty insane line up of nearly 60 food vendors including Reuben on Rye, the new Jewish deli truck from Cherry Hill's Kibitz Room (gotta love The Schmuck, a split kosher hot dog stuffed with mashed potatoes and fried onions) and Mompops, Downingtown's own popsicle peddlers with flavors like chocolate-sea salt and strawberry cream-lemonade.
Aside from a super solid food line up, this Night Market is offering up some serious entertainment options from the likes of tight rope walking courtesy of The Philadelphia School of Circus Art, Japanese drummers Kyo Daiko and Halfro.

School might be out for summer but Fair Food is just getting started with their warm weather series of workshops. Happening at the Rick Nichols Room of Reading Terminal Market, these classes are covering everything from oh-so-in-right-now fermentation, not-for-the-faint-of-heart (or hands) mozzarella stretching and tomato canning with friend of Meal Ticket, Marisa McClellen. Tickets are going for a very affordable $35 to $40 and come with seasonal snacks from Fair Food Farmstand and beers courtesy of Victory.
First up on Tuesday, June 25th is Fun with Fermentation: Basics with Amanda Fiefer of Phickle fame. She'll be talking microbes and demonstrating their magical powers via pickles, kraut and blueberry vinegar. Tickets here.
On July 11th Ryan Caputo of Caputo Bros. Creamery is heating things up with Creating with Curd: Mozzarella and More. He'll be educating aspiring cheesemakers on the ways of stretching everything from mozzarella to burrata and strachiatella. Tickets here.
And on August 15th i.e. the height of tomato season Marisa McClellen of Food in Jars is teaching a Crash Course in Canning: Tomatoes. Because, well, who doesn't want their own personal stash of summer tomatoes all year long. Check back with Fair Foods for tickets to this one.
Hardcore curd nerds, mark your calenders. On Wednesday, June 26 the good mongers at Di Bruno Brothers (1730 Chestnut St.) are hosting a charity dinner to help raise funds for Essex Street Cheese Company, a teeny, tiny importer that brings in some very fine cheeses. Five cheese celebs will be in attendance for the dinner including Phillipe Goux of Marcel Petite Comté. Tenaya Darlington a.k.a. Madame Fromage and long time Parmigiano ager, Giorgio Cravero. The five course dinner will showcase the cheese maker's wares, think cheese-centric dishes like Montgomery Cheddar mac and cheese and a Parmigiano custard with Jersey blueberry sorbet. Tickets are going for $100 a pop including a copy of the newly released Di Bruno's cookbook and available right here.

I spent a long weekend visiting Portland, Oregon (the Valhalla of food and drink?!?!) and I've gotta say, Portlandia jokes aside, that town is killing it. Friday's lunch happened at Grüner, a super sleek German spot with a killer wine list, all sorts of wonderful house-made charcuterie and the best check presenters I've seen. Because, after all, who doesn't want to get their bill in a 1960s German novel.
