Start planning your viewing parties now, people: Two of television's most popular food programs are putting Philly's cuisine and culinary talent in the limelight.
travelchannel.com
For your first round of must-see TV, tune in as Travel Channel's resident fearless eater and host of Bizarre Foods, Andrew Zimmern, tests his adventurous tastes in Philadelphia. Zimmern completed his tour de force of Philly over the summer, reportedly stopping by Reading Terminal Market and John's Roast Pork, among other spots, along the way. Also keep your eyes peeled for Meal Ticket's pride and joy, Felicia D'Ambrosio (that's the back of her head above!), making a special appearance alongside Zimmern. The episode airs Tue., Jan. 25, at 10 p.m.

Next up, clear your schedule at 10 p.m. this Sunday, Jan. 30, when two members of Philadelphia's galaxy of star chefs, Iron Chef Jose Garces and Zahav chef Michael Solomonov, face off in Kitchen Stadium on Food Network's Iron Chef America. We're pulling for a secret ingredient outside both competitors' wheelhouses to keep things interesting (no pork for you, Jose!). What secret ingredient would you like to see? Leave your suggestions in the comments, we'll be sure to pass them along to The Chairman. As far as local viewing parties go, no official details just yet, but we hear Solomonov will be watching the show Sunday night at his Percy Street Barbecue (900 South St.).

Earlier this week, Erin Finnerty swung by Philly's first Le Pain Quotidien location (1423-25 Walnut St.) and snapped some photos of the café/bakery, which opened this past Wednesday. LPQ, which offers baked-fresh goodies in a million and one ways, plus boulangerie options aplenty (think lighter fare, like salads, soups, tartines, etc.), serves breakfast, lunch and dinner daily; here is their everyday menu and their specials menu (PDFs). Hours: Mon.-Thu., 7 a.m.-9 p.m.; Fri., 7 a.m.-10 p.m.; Sat., 8 a.m.-10 p.m.; Sun., 8 a.m.-8 p.m. More photos, including a look of LPQ's signature communal table seating, after the jump.

Last time we checked in with Kenzo artist Brian "Brain" Dwyer (above), he was organizing a hugely popular pizza-themed art show at Rocket Cat Café. Now, the serious 'za enthusiast and ginger bon vivant is taking the next big step: opening his own pizza place.

Dwyer and three partners recently signed an agreement of sale for an address in Fishtown (they don't want to say exactly where just yet in the press, but know that it's along the main Frankford Avenue drag), and the space will host Pizza Brain, a combination pizza shop, pizza memorabilia museum, arcade and performance space that Dwyer says will both celebrate and preserve the "culture around pizza." Dwyer is a serious pizza memorabilia enthusiast (that's him above brandishing just two of hundreds of his pizza-themed LPs; he's investigating whether he can create a category for pizza collectibles in the Guinness Book of World Records), and the plan is for Pizza Brain to display a prominent portion of his 'za cache. But he admits that he knows little about the actual challenges of opening and operating a pizza restaurant, which is why he's partnered with Joe Hunter, a Charleston transplant and biz vet who's ran shops down south.

While Hunter will focus on developing the menu (they want to do both grab-a-slice pies and fancier artisan stuff of varying circumferences in an open kitchen setting), Dwyer will concern himself with the entertainment aspect of Pizza Brain, which'll accommodate between 30 and 50. He is currently shopping around for pizza-themed arcades games (he's already secured a Plinko-esque Ninja Turtles Pizza Drop machine), and says the backyard area of his Fishtown hub will be home to a live performance space dubbed — wait for it — "Masterpizza Theatre." He wants to stay open late-ish to accommodate the hordes of Fishtown kids who gravitate further south toward Girard for their nightly entertainment. This is all very preliminary, but if everything goes as planned, Dwyer hopes to have Pizza Brain open by the fall of 2011.

Our Living Language: When people today speak casually of ordering a za, "pizza," they are unwittingly producing an expression that is quite interesting to language historians. Za derives from the full form pizza by a process known as clipping. Two types of clipping are common in English: dropping the unstressed syllables or syllables not receiving the primary word stress, as in fridge from refrigerator; and dropping all syllables after the first syllable, as in ab, dis, porn, and vibe, whether or not the first syllable was originally stressed. In the case of za, the syllable that was dropped was originally stressed and was the first syllable, which is unusual. Rents for "parents," is another recent example of the same kind of clipping. Interestingly, we don't need to stay in the realm of contemporary youth slang to see the results of this unusual process. The words phone, bus, and wig (from telephone, omnibus, periwig) belong to Standard English but had their start as slangy or catchy neologisms formed by clipping stressed syllables, just like za. Who knows whether in fifty years za and rents will be as widely accepted as phone and wig are now? See Note at rent3.

Team Meal Ticket is excited to welcome three new voices to the oh-god-I'm-so-full fray. After the jump, get all the particulars on three names you'll be seeing quite a bit of over the next few months.
Laurel Rose Purdy is a Temple graduate from Woodstock, New York. A long-term member of the Philadelphia restaurant community, she is currently a server at Amada. Her food blog, Devour, is her venue to show love for quinoa and her recent unforgettable meals. She is in her third month of gluten free living, which for any self-appointed food geek is an immense challenge in its own right. A wine obsessor, she hopes to be a certified sommelier by 2013. Her favorite foods are raw oysters and Kettle corn. She has three cats and a dog and would be more than happy to show you photos of them sleeping or wrestling or yawning anytime. Choice Drinks: Southwark, N. 3rd, Parc, McGlinchey's Choice Eats: Zahav, Bar Ferdinand, Pumpkin, Mai Lai Wah, Koo Zee Doo, and still, Amada
A Detroit transplant and University of Michigan graduate, Erin Finnerty has been living, breathing and eating in Philadelphia since 2008. A vegetarian ("pescetarian," if hairs must be split) with a knack for finding delicious meatless fare, Finnerty enjoys the finer things in life: sushi, diet soda and thin-crust pizza. She grew up on take-home goodies from her dad's tenure as a bakery manager in Metro Detroit and it should come as no suprise that she is an amateur baker, placing third in a "Best Pie in Philadelphia" contest last year — the only independent party to rank. In her down time, she can be found in her Fairmount home, enjoying the company of her two furry feline friends, snacking and watching the best Netflix has to offer. Choice Drinks: North Star Bar, PYT, Khyber Pass Pub Choice Eats: Honey's, Tacconelli's, Barbuzzo, Capogiro
Sandwich enthusiast Adrian Pelliccia is a native of Northern Liberties, but currently calls West Philly home while finishing up his senior year at the University of Pennsylvania. Adrian is an associate editor at Under the Button, the blog of 34th Street Magazine, where his favorite responsibilities include coverage of the West Philadelphia food truck scene and weekly explorations of The Daily Pennsylvanian's crime log. Growing up with a sister who is one part human, six parts baker has made him into an avid fan of profiteroles, popovers and elaborately decorated cakes (cup and otherwise). Choice Drinks: McGlinchey's, The Franklin Mortgage and Investment Co., Royal Tavern, Oscar's, Silk City Choice Eats: Osteria, Sang Kee Peking Duck House, Han Dynasty, Barbuzzo, Pub & Kitchen, Nam Phuong, Standard Tap, Szechuan Tasty House

Philly's serious coffeehouses hold court in the neighborhoods (Bodhi and Shot Tower in QV/BV, Ultimo in Newbold; Lovers & Madmen in West Philly, and many more), but it's been some time since Center City proper got an espresso shot in the arm. Enter Elixr, which Evan Inatome unveiled Wednesday in the old Hausbrandt space (207 S. 15th St., b/t Walnut and Locust). Inatome, who's brewing Kansas' PT's Coffee on a La Marzocco machine, plans on running long hours (Mon.-Fri. 6 a.m.-10 p.m.; Sat.-Sun 7 a.m.-10 p.m.) to accommodate the area's heavy foot traffic and large population of apartment building dwellers. The space, tricked out with a floor-to-ceiling glass facade and lots of pretty reclaimed wood, features window rail seating as well as communal picnic-style tables. Elixr is also carrying Au Fournil pastries and Marathon Grill sandwiches at the moment, with plans to expand its non-coffee offerings more everything gets settled. Inatome, who's done a lot of relief work overseas, plans on donating a 20 percent portion of Elixr's take to various charities, including initiatives he's involved with in coalition with his brother-in-law and business partner, Eagles tackle Winston Justice.

Last Monday we told you about the eating contest, to celebrate National Pastrami Day (Jan. 13), at Delicatessen (703 Chestnut St.). Today at 5:30 p.m., the top six fastest eaters who have qualified over the past week will face off in the scarf-off finals. The challenge: a 48-ounce (aka 3-pound) pastrami sandwich known as The Maccabee. Delicatessen owner Michael Spector plans on doling out gratis pastrami and beer for curious onlookers. Now, please indulge us as we rootrootroot for the home team — John Tarng, City Paper's systems administrator, is one of the six competitors vying for the pastrami crown. That's the characteristically nonchalant Tarng above (we asked him to show us his "game face," and that's what he offered up). FYI to other competitors: This dude ate a wrap and fries for lunch today like it wasn't no thang, meaning he IS NOT SCARED. GO JOHN!

It would appear that the answer is yes, they are! After a brief closure around Christmas due to what were characterized as “mechanical and technological issues,” the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board is slowly rolling the incongruous machines back into action. We touched base with Harrisburg spokesperson Stacey Witalec, who was kind enough to offer some insight into the gradual return of the Commonwealth's most idiosyncratic pieces of technology. Meal Ticket has learned that the reason for the initial closure had to do with mechanical errors that caused the machines to either charge customers without dispensing wine, or, thanks to problems with the turnstiles, not dispense wine at all. Things seem to be on the road to recovery, though. This past weekend, the only wine kiosk within Philadelphia city limits (at the Fresh Grocer at 4001 Walnut St.) was fully operational and doling out sweet, sweet wine. Witalec mentioned that approximately four other kiosks had been fixed, and that the remainder of the 29 machines statewide were still undergoing further repairs, their reopenings forthcoming.

@deafmute - Are you serious? Go to just about any other state and you'll see better ways to sell it. In South Carolina, where I'm from, we sell wine and beer in grocery stores and it works fine. And if you think there must be a lack of control there, then let me set your mind at ease. I went to plenty of parties in high school and no one was getting drunk off of wine or beer they bought themselves. Over age people bought all of it for us and the same thing happens here in PA.
