Leave it to Shake Shack (2000 Sansom St.) to come up with some interesting twists on the pumpkin everything theme for their new Halloween Specials, which will be available in the shop from Fri., Oct. 26 to Wed., Oct. 31.

The Halloweenie dresses their hot dog with pumpkin mustard, bacon, cranberries, and sage (wait a second... this is starting to sound more like Thanksgiving). And not being ones to leave well enough alone with the expected pumpkin shake, they're also breaking out the Shack O' Lantern. That's a pumpkin-spiced marshmallow shake, because everyone knows that Halloween is way more about candy than pumpkins, anyway.

Mike Geno's dreamy portraits of cheese have won him national acclaim with spots in everything from Cooking Light to Esquire and The New York Times. Now he's moving from Stilton to sushi with a new series that's going to be showcased at Santa Monica's Skidmore Contemporary Art. The series features a selection of four rolls with beautifully textured slices of kiwi and salmon and glittery globs of tobiko.

Sometimes I think I could be a vegetarian. I love vegetables; in the summer, my meatless intake way outmatches my consumption of burgers, hot dogs, steamers and all the other tasty animal proteins harvested from our fields and seas. But this time of the year, I couldn't do it. The chill frosting the air (no matter how subtle it might be this week) triggers that primal craving for roasted flesh, and fortunately, Meritage (500 S. 20th St.) is obliging with the season's first run of game, including the king of wild meats: venison. Chef Anne Coll is doing the deer with parsnip puree, chestnut and gingersnap sauce on her weekly five-course $39 pre-fixe, starting tonight and running through Friday. Bambi, daddy's coming.

Whether you're a no-beans Texas purist or a chili lover of the vegetarian variety, mark your calender for Sunday, November 4th. Keepers of the Flame, a group on a mission to "hold fast to the sacred arts of true barbecue in Philadelphia while preparing great barbecue with time honored traditions alongside unmatched entertainment" are teaming up with Little Baby's Ice Cream for CHILIFEST at Goldilocks Gallery (723 Chestnut St.). There's going to be a cookoff with awards for overall best, best use of spice and most unique ingredients as well as a not-for-the-faint-of-heart chile eating competition.

Admission is $10 for all-you-can-eat chili samples and the event is BYO but the good folks at Spodee have generously donated wine-shine for chili-pairing cocktails.

If you'd like to get in on the chili making or chile eating action shoot an email to keepersoftheflamephilly@gmail.com for your chance to wine chili-chile supremacy and prizes from Little Baby's, Spodee and WhistlePig Whiskey.

On today’s Afternoon Snacks: a tasting of game at Will tonight, plus some early suggestions for the weekend, from booze-soaked to highly practical.

There’s still time to snag a table at Will (1911 East Passyunk Ave.) tonight for their Tuesday tasting, which highlights game this time around. As usual, the prix fixe is $45 and it’s BYOB. The menu gathers an embarrassment of rich, earthy flavors, taking you through elk loin, guinea hen, and quail not once, but twice. But you can see that for yourself after the break.

Dinners with beer pairings are good, but here’s what’s better: dinners with two simultaneous beer pairings that pit brewery against brewery in an all-out death match. Such is the plan for Iron Hill Phoenixville’s (130 E. Bridge Street) Beer vs. Beer Dinner on Tue., Nov. 6: the brewery’s own beers will feature alongside selections from Allagash with each of five courses. It’s up to you to decide which pairing prevails.

The dinner starts at 7 p.m., carries a price tag of $85-a-head (inclusive of gratuity), and requires reservations. After the jump, we’ve got the full menu, which runs from light seared Hamachi to country-fried duck confit with biscuits and foie gras gravy, book-ended with a terrine and dessert that flaunt their fall pedigree to the fullest.

After putting the finishing touches on his epic pizza-celeb mural at Pizza Brain you'd think that local illustrator-hot dog guru Hawk Krall would be on pizza hiatus. Happily this is not the case. Hawk is back on the pizza trail, this time seeking out Mexican-pizza mash-ups at South Philly's Rosario's (1501 Wharton St.)

Although the pizza wasn't perfect (Hawk called out an underdone, too thick crust), the toppings combo of pineapple, pork, guajillo hot sauce, onions and cilantro were spot on.

For more on South Philly Mexi-pizza check out Hawk's report on San Lucas Pizzeria.

Head on down to Devil's Den (1148 South 11th St.) tonight at 7 p.m. for Boulder Beer Growler Night where Colorado's premier micro brewery will be pouring British-style Cold Hop and a Pinot Noir Barrel Aged Saison. Brews will be available by the glass but if you decide to go large format the folks at Devil's Den are going to be giving away complimentary growlers with the first 50 fills. And as an added incentive it's $1 off all drafts and flights all night long.

And if you'd rather spend your All Hallows' Eve sipping pumpkin beers instead of handing out candy, the Den will be tapping a firkin of Southern Tier Pumpking on the 31st along with other autumnal selections from the cellar including Weyerbacher's Imperial Pumpkin and Autumn Maple from Bruery.

Fishtown whiskey aficionados take note, Lloyd is opening tomorrow night at 529 East Girard Avenue. The space, once home to Hot Potato Cafe (a restaurant that even Gordon Ramsay and the Kitchen Nightmares team couldn't revitalize) has been taken over by New York import Scott Coudriet.

Lloyd's moniker is a homage to both Coudriet's father and the creepy bow-tied bartender from The Shining. The decor is modeled after Coudriet's childhood living room where his father enjoyed the Lloyd proto-special: a Hi-Life and a shot of Old Grand Dad.

Also on offer at Lloyd are eight drafts, fifteen bottles, all local, along with a menu of classic and house-created cocktails.
