Halloween has come and gone, but that doesn't mean we can't direct your attention to this awesome Burger-o-Lantern. It's the creation of our girl Amy Strauss of Apples and Cheese, Please. (Did you see her Good Word interview?)

This weekend, North Carolina-based Fairbank Farms issued a voluntary recall of more than half a million pounds of ground beef the meat purveyor believes are possibly contaminated with E. coli bacteria.

Locally, these products were carried at Acme, Giant, BJ's and Trader Joe's. The recalled beef, produced/packaged by Fairbank between Sept. 14 and 16, would already be past its expiration date by 23 to 32 days, meaning there are two very important things to keep in mind here: 1) no store is currently stocking any of the products in question; and 2) if you did purchase any of these products, they would most likely be in your freezer right now.

Acme has recalled all ground beef products sold at its Pennsylvania, Jersey, Maryland and Delaware locations between the dates of Sept. 16 and Oct. 6, including "all brands of ground beef including Wild Harvest, Lancaster Brand and store-made ground beef products including meatballs, meatloaf, Salisbury steak and stuffed peppers."

Slashfood has a detailed list of all the recalled products. If you are in possession of any, return them to the store for a full refund.

If you have questions, contact your retailer or call Fairbank Farms' consumer hotline at 1-877-546-0122 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. (Hotline hours are extended to 8 p.m. today.)

Provided the average temperature is getting higher, accordingly all forms of germs, viruses, and influenza etc are more likely to multiply.

Some skeptics say the warning against hazards of climate change is overstated, but judging from more frequent and widespread outbreaks of e. coli, salmonella, and bird, swine flu cases endangering human lives and economic recovery seriously, some prompt measures need to be taken, I guess.

Queen Village's O'Neal's (611 S. Third St.) has been kicking around for three decades now, and they're toasting to their longevity with a little party next Thursday, Nov. 12, from 11 a.m. to last call. (It was originally scheduled for October but got bumped back due to the Series.) Take advantage of a selection of $2.50 domestics and well drinks and $3.50 local brews and call drinks. There'll be giveaways and grab bags, some of which will be "O'Neal's artifacts." DJ Botany 500 will spin starting at 9:30 p.m. No cover.

Last week, the irrepressible Bravo network announced that they're picking up Top Chef: Just Desserts, a spin-off of our favorite cooking competition show featuring pastry chefs battling for sweet-tooth supremacy. Let's gloss over, for a moment, your desire to either a) celebrate more Top Chef in your life or b) complain about too much Top Chef in your life to address a more pressing question there's a casting call for the show at NYC's Craftsteak this coming Sunday, Nov. 8, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Which local pastry chefs/dessert specialists do you think would do the most damage?

We've provided our list after the jump. Please share your thoughts/picks in the comments.

  • Cedric Barberet, Le Bec-Fin
  • Krystal Weaver, Sonata
  • Jessie Prawlucki, Fond
  • Matthew Maslowski, XIX
  • Danielle Konya, Vegan Treats
  • Eddy Hales, The Fountain
  • Tom Block, Naked Chocolate
  • Christina Diekewicz, Union Trust
  • Monica Glass, 10 Arts
  • Ann Giles, Garces Restaurant Group
  • Peter Woolsey, Bistrot La Minette

Krystal Weaver is a young talented pastry chef. She would be a great pic since she has competition experience from the culinary olympics. She is a fierce competitor.

Danielle from Vegan Treats easily has the best personality and "look" for television. They don't need more non-descript faces/personalities on that show.

Danielle Konya is not only the most creative and talented of the bunch, but she would be the best candidate for Top Chef because she certainly is the most interesting to viewers in terms of her absolutely stunning personality and uniqueness! Check out her website: www.vegantreats.com. Her treats are works of art both in appearance and taste. She takes on challenges and surpasses every single conception. She has my vote and warrants all of yours.

I'm a big fan of the pastries at Garces's restaurants. Isn't it one person who designs the pastries for each place?

What about Kate Honeyman from Buddakan? She's been nominated for a James Beard Award for the past two years.

If you're still questin' for Halloween-themed beers to hold on to the spirit of the just-passed holiday, Magic Hat is offering up a "Night of the Living Dead" variety pack. A case "a macabre medley of monstrous mixtures!" retails for about $35 and features four brews: deep-red Roxy Rolles, a rich Chocolate Belgian Stout and Magic Hat classics #9 and Circus Boy.

The folks at Magic Hat hooked us up with samples of Roxy Rolles and the Stout, along with a sweet pair of neon plastic shades (above, worn by beer). Sadly, the shades do not come in every "Night of the Living Dead" pack, otherwise we could have billed this as a "Drunken Corey Hart Costume in a Box."

In any case, the special guests on the Magic Hat roster are quite tasty. Roxy Rolles has a complex, fruity-pine vibe from a blend of Brewer's Gold and Simcoe hops. A nice beer for sessioning, especially if you like a strong red ale; serve it with something savory. Magic Hat's "Fall Odd Notion 2009" is the Chocolate Belgian Stout, a might, malty bevvy with delicious cocoa and caramel undertones from five different malt varieties. If you're a fan of the dark, this brew will light up your autumn nights.

I thrifted the Pac-Man glass somewhere in Philly, maybe Super Thrift in Port Richmond Plaza (York & Aramingo). It was one of those finds that made me feel all warm and fuzzy, just like that Magic Hat Chocolate Belgian Stout.
