Today and today only, hit up any local Whole Foods location (2001 Pennsylvania Ave.; 929 South St.; 500 W. Germantown Pike, Plymouth Meeting) and you'll be able to buy pounds of 31/40 (or medium-size) shrimp for $5.99, 50 percent off the usual price. The market chain, which has dubbed the promo "Shrimpsgiving" (eee!), is kicking off the deal to promote its high standards in regards to responsibly sourced seafood, which Whole Foods acquires farm-raised by sustainably minded single producers.

Received this very specific inquiry from a Meal Ticket reader:
I've got four friends coming to town this weekend: one eat-anything Southerner, two vegetarians who'll eat fish and one gluten-free pig-lover (as in, she worked on a pig rescue farm one summer and now won't even go near bacon). I want to show off Philly and take them somewhere fun, but I don't want their food restrictions to be an issue/burden. Suggestions?
Tough! Some immediate thoughts from us: Kanella, Pumpkin, Mémé and JG Domestic. While all of these restaurants (in our experience at least) are porcine proponents, 1) there are typically great seafood options at each; 2) gluten-free shouldn't be hard to accommodate/order around; and 3) the eat-anything Southern friend will be able to get down on some hellishly good cheffish specialties at each (Mémé's marrow! JG's pork belly and wile boar! Oops sorry pig lover.) Who do y'all have? Let us know in the comments.

Bar at Fish sounds like a good fit, too. Kraftwork comes to mind for something more casual, lots of good veggies, and Barbuzzo fit the bill for somewhere in between.

Oh man, i'd say Zahav. Great for vegetarians (and have fish). Prob something new to try for the southerner, and plenty of gluten free stuff.

You can't get a res at Kanella, dunno about the others. I like Royal Tavern or South Philly Taproom for this kind of thing, but maybe they want someplace a little nicer. Zahav is a good rec for more upscale.

- The Jude Abides created meat diagrams featuring some of our favorite video game characters. Somewhat nerdy subject matter, yes, but unbelievably fucking cool. Awesome job. - The Amateur Gourmet got invited to review Robert's Restaurant, located in famed gentlemans' club Scores. He sends his best gay to get the job done, and hilarity ensues. - Hot Knives' "Luscious Dumplings" are still in the works, but what they've got working so far sounds mighty tasty to me. Japanese eggplant, lemongrass, kimchee, basil ... if someone here attempts this recipe, please holler with your results! - Messy and Picky visit Meadow Run Farm in Lititz, and share their tour through words and photos. Clearly my favorite shots are of the animals looking darn cute.  They also visited Smuckers Meats the day before, but warning: the slaughterhouse photos included are not for the faint of heart. - Ever wonder how to infuse your Thanksgiving feast with beer? Philly Beer Scene gets some expert advice on what to cook, with which brews. Cheers to that!

Our first mention of Nick Miglino's Sticks and Stones (1909 E. Passyunk Ave.) was back in February of 2008, predating the existence of Meal Ticket (!). Though there there have been some glimmers of progress in the nearly three years since that initial news, the doors of the P'yunk pub have yet to open. (The neon red street sign, however, always seems to be on.) Now — in November of 2010! — we're hearing that Miglino is dead-set on hosting a soft opening on Nov. 24, aka the Wednesday before Thanksgiving aka the biggest bar night of the year. Apparently the plan is to close for Turkey Day, then re-soft-open on Friday the 26th for the weekend, in support of a full opening on Monday, Nov. 29. We shall see!

Checked out Sticks&Stones last night, pretty great beer list, heavy on draft locals with some Big Bottles (ranging from Conestoga Brewing Co to a brewery in Spain). Menu was eclectic, possibly too much so, ranging from burger and fries, mussels with 5 different stocks, sushi, nachos (disappointing) and various salads. Food cost too much for the portions though, especially the nachos (9.00 for less than half of what you get at the Royal Tavern or the POPE).

It’s a block from my house, but unless the menu tightens up I can’t see myself going there when I could go 4 blocks in either direction to SPTR or the POPE.

Shot Tower Coffee on Facebook
Ran into Mat Derago and Mariel Freeman last night — they're the couple opening a Stumptown-dispensing coffee house on the corner of Sixth and Christian, and they shared details with Adam Erace back in September. Turns out they're tweaking the name, originally Commonwealth — the café, which should be open in the next two to three weeks, will be called Shot Tower Coffee. Here they are on Facebook and Twitter.

The Food Bank of South Jersey is hurting. Demand shoots way up during the holiday season, and with Thanksgiving right around the corner, the Food Bank has found itself a couple thousand turkeys short. But it's more than just turkeys, says volunteer coordinator Dan Getman. The Food Bank gets 90 percent of its food from the federal government, but for the rest, they rely on individual and group donations. It's in that last 10 percent where they're feeling the hit right now. "We're giving away more than we have to give," Getman says. He stresses that every little bit helps: If every kid in Camden donated one can of food, it would amount to a couple thousand pounds of food to go to the needy. "That alone would make a huge difference," he says. Though the Food Bank serves four counties in South Jersey, they accept donations from everywhere. If you're interested in helping out, read on to see how you can do so. - Hold a food drive at your office, church, school, wherever. Register online and check out the Food Bank's suggestions to inject some fun into your food drive. Some corporations are putting together whole meals in boxes, which Getman says is extremely helpful, as it takes away the stress of using government-funded food. - Donate a turkey, or $17 (the cost of an individual turkey), to the Food Bank's Turkey Drive. They're about 7,000 turkeys short for the upcoming holiday. - Ideal items to donate: Canned fruits and vegetables, as well as holiday items, like candied yams and stuffing. Government-funded food is more "generic" items than seasonal goods, says Getman, so all that tasty holiday stuff is what they're really looking for.

If you are growing more food than you need, visit www.AmpleHarvest.org - a site that helps diminish hunger by enabling gardeners to share their garden produce/herbs with neighborhood food pantries.

The site is free both for the food pantries and the gardeners using it.

Backed by Google.com and the USDA, nearly 3,000 food pantries nationwide are already on it and more are signing up daily.

It includes preferred delivery times, driving instructions to the pantry as well as (in many cases) information about store bought items also needed by the pantry (for after the growing season). A free Ample Harvest iPhone app is also available. See www.AmpleHarvest.org/CNN.php for recent CNN coverage.

If your community has a food pantry, make sure they are registered at www.AmpleHarvest.org.

Once a week, Team Meal Ticket shares its latest sugar-laden fixations. Do not tell 0ur dentist. IN QUESTION: Our pick for the most slept-on sour candy on the market, Zours are the lip-puckering cousins of well-known Just Born products like Mike and Ikes and Hot Tamales. They feature the same size, shape and consistency as those super-sticky candy classics, but are dusted in magical sour powder and come in sour flavors (green apple, watermelon, lemon, cherry and our fave, the does-not-occur-in-nature blue raspberry). Added appeal is derived from the box art, which features anthropomorphic Zours tripping face after eating bites of fruit. Lemme get some of that apple, I'm going to see The Wall later! AVAILABLE AT: For some reason, Zours are hard to find and it's bullshit! But we've discovered that the Rite Aid at 23rd and Walnut is reliable place to cop. HOW MANY DO WE TYPICALLY EAT IN ONE SITTING: The entire box, real talk. FINER POINTS: Perhaps this is just us on our Rain Man grind, but we very much enjoy ripping open a bag of Zours, categorizing the individual candies by color and then methodically eating them in various two-at-once color combinations (blue raspberry and watermelon together is the jam!). Please tell us that someone out there does this too.

Many people think they have STD and directly go to online STD services like ** STDpal.com *** without having the test. They do not want to go to the hospital due to the social stigma attached to it. This may help them a lot. Not sure this phone test will make those niche sites' members increase or decrease.

The Village Belle (757 S. Front St.), the new Queen Village restaurant from the Campanaro clan and their longtime FOH friend Michael Romeo, has just started rocking it out at Front and Fitzwater, the longtime home of Frederick's. They've done one hell of a job shedding that old-school trattoria's dated design elements — many of the walls have been stripped to the original brick, and wraparound windows let in loads of natural light. The 90+ seat dining room's split up into three distinct areas, featuring burgundy banquettes and a checkered-tile "bistro" section half-framed by an in-operation service station; the bar, a beautiful, 26-foot-long single piece of mahogany, is the main focal point of the restaurant's south side, which also features a mini wine closet and neat photo-on-glass treatments of various real-life village belles on the bathroom doors. Chef Louis Campanaro, brother to chef Joey Campanaro of NY's Little Owl and Market Table (Joey's involved in this project, too), is doing a neighborhood-friendly Mediterranean-influenced  (not strictly Italian) menu, with housemade pastas. Check it out here:

Opening hours are Mon.-Wed., 5:30-10 p.m. and Thu.-Sat., 5:30-11 p.m. Closed Sundays for now, but the crew's looking to start up Sunday brunch eventually.

This year's event, which'll run $75 a head, will feature grub — a big buffet of charcuterie/salumi, plus vegan/vegetarian options — from Campbell's Soup exec chef Tom Griffiths, a certified master chef. There'll be plenty of beer and wine, too, and Philadelphia Brewing Co., which has hosted past Whole Hogs, will debut its latest Harvest from the Hood, brewed with Greensgrow Farms-grown hops, at the event.
