Over on the Green Aisle Grocery blog, Meal Ticket's very own Felicia D shares her can't-miss hot toddy recipe for all those chilly present-wrapping nights ahead of you. Though the recipe is not entirely one-stop Green Aisle (1618 E. Passyunk Ave.) doesn't sell bourbon, of course you can get almost all of the other ingredients from Andrew and Adam Erace's store. Jamie Lokoff of MilkBoy Recordings just touched base with Meal Ticket to share some details on a planned Center City branch of his MilkBoy coffeehouse/live music venue, which has locations in Ardmore and Bryn Mawr. (He'll present to the Washington Square West Civic Association this evening.)
Lokoff says he was approached by development firm U3, which is looking to revitalize the stretch of Center City they refer to as "the hole in the doughnut" historically, there hasn't been a whole lot going on around this stretch, but that's changing rapidly. "We toyed with the idea of Northern Liberties, and up on Broad Street," says Lokoff, "but ultimately we liked this because it's right in the middle." Situated on the southwest corner of 11th and Chestnut in a currently vacant property, MilkBoy Center City will feature two floors coffeehouse/dining seat on the ground, with a 100-or-so-head space for performances upstairs. there will be full bars on both floors. An larger kitchen with a hood will means they'll be able to expand their food offerings quite a bit.
As this project is still in the very early stages, Lokoff will commit only to "spring" for a projected debut, though he says he'd love to open before local colleges let out for the summer.
where is the milkboy coffee?

Every Dec. 31st, there are 2,984 restaurants offering prix-fixe multi-course dinners of things they don't know how to cook (Cornish game hens?) and almost as many bars laying out buffets of sagging crudites and cheese cubes in their $100 all-you-can-drink packages. We sifted the press releases to bring you the best deals, most exciting eats and premier locations for fireworks viewing.
BYOB
Caf Estelle (444 N. 4th St., 215-925-5080); Before Marshall Green owned his cute 'lil bruncherie, he worked with some of the city's finest classically-trained chefs, like David Ansill and Bryan Sikora. His five-courser ($65 at 6 p.m., $75 at 9 p.m. with Champagne toast) lets Green show off a little, while guests reap the benefits. Housemade potato gnocchi with braised rabbit, medjool dates, cabrales and almonds sure ain't for breakfast. Check the full menu at CafeEstelle.com/eventmenu.php
Sycamore (14 S. Lansdowne Ave., Lansdowne, 484-461-2867); Their $49, five-course tasting menu is one of the most appealing we've seen. Monkfish with celery root pure, candied cipollini onions and truffle butter sounds decadent enough to be part of your last meal of 2009 before the cheese plate and dessert trio finish you off. Seatings are at 6 and 9 p.m.; download the full menu at SycamoreBYO.com/NYE.pdf
Beer Geek
Varga Bar (941 Spruce St., 215-627-5200); Each of R. Evan Turney's five courses has three options, including a vegetarian choice, so diners needn't worry they will be forced to eat what the chef likes to eat (heaven forfend!). Four of the courses are paired with serious brews from Dogfish Head (120 Minute IPA, World Wide Stout), plus a guest appearance from everyone's favorite Mad Elf. $75 per person, seatings at 6 and 8 p.m. Scroll to the bottom of VargaBar.com to download a .pdf of the full menu.
Royal Tavern (937 E. Passyunk Ave., 215-389-6694) $20 for a two-hour open bar including the whole geeky draft list; you choose your two hours, plus all the usual menu items and specials. If previous years are any indication, this is going to be packed.
Superior Firework-Viewing Location
Zahav (237 St. James Place, 215-625-8800); Mesibah Gedolah means "big party" in Hebrew, so this four-courser is sure to be extravagant. $65 snags locally foraged mushrooms and quail confit Al He'sh with foie gras, among other tasties. Better yet, you are a mere block from the 6 p.m. and midnight fireworks shows at Penn's Landing. Bring the Snuggies.
Positano Coast (212 Walnut St., 215-238-0499); $25 per person reserves a couch in Positano's all-white Sopra Lounge and included a sparkling cocktail, midnight toast, party favors and a live DJ. The lounge's floor-to-ceiling windows should provide a clear view of the explosive welcome to 2010.
Themed
APO (102 S. 13th St., 215-735-7500); $100 open bar, including all those lovely, complicated cocktails and butlered hors d'oeuvres; Roaring Twenties attire in the fabulous style of Gatsby and Daisy. Just don't run anyone over on your way home from the party.
Silk City (435 Spring Garden St., 215-592-8838); If you're not totally over snow by then, there will be more of it in the Winter Wonderland-themed beer garden. Or just get sweaty in the dance party bit. $12 advance/$15 at the door plus a bevy of cheap drink specials, including Citywides.

Jan. 16 will see the debut of a weekly farmers market in The Piazza at Schmidts, a venue that's been basically screaming for such a thing. The market will be held Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., providing a day-early alternative (or addendum) for all you Headhouse shoppers after that Sunday market picks back up in May. They'll be more than 20 purveyors on hand weekly; the product selection will start out seasonally appropriate, with winter fruits/vegetables, meats like veal and beef (plus game like quail and pheasant) in addition to eggs and cheeses. Prepared foods, too. We'll have more specifics on the participating farmers/artisans soon.

Yards Brewing is commemorating their 15 years in the beer biz (the first beers hit the market in January of 1995) with Olde Bartholomew, the first barleywine they ever attempted some ten years ago. Yards operations manager and general good-time guy Steve Mashington describes the 10.3 percent ABV heavy as such: "It's a real English barleywine -- a great malt backbone, with a good amount of hops in the nose. Hops are present, but not overpowering, with a cool little hop finish. It's dangerously drinkable. The first time I had this, I thought, trouble."
The draft-only brew will be generally released by Yards distributor Muller Beverage early in 2010, but before that comes the Ten Days of Barleywine. Beginning New Year's Eve at the Dawson Street Pub in Manayunk and winding up at the P.O.P.E. on Sat., Jan. 9, Yards will tap a firkin or pin of Olde Bart every day at a different tavern. Check out the schedule of trouble, after the jump.
Thursday 12/31/09 - Dawson St Pub 5pm - Firkin
Friday 1/1/10 - Devils Den 1pm - Firkin
Saturday 1/2/10 - Varga Bar 5pm - Firkin (on the handpump!)
Sunday 1/3/10 - Swift Half Pub 1pm - Firkin (plus the Eagles vs the Cowgirls on the bigscreen)
Monday 1/4/10 - Local 44 5pm - Firkin
Tuesday 1/5/10 - Hulmeville Inn 7pm - Firkin
Wednesday 1/6/10 - Standard Tap 6pm - Firkin
Thursday 1/7/10 - Kite and Key 7pm - Firkin
Friday 1/8/10 - Pub & Kitchen 5pm - Pin
Friday 1/8/10 - The London Grill 8pm - Pin
Saturday 1/9/10 - Pub on Passyunk East (POPE) 12pm - Firkin
Its about time one of our Philly breweries put out a barleywine! English style too, I'm excited!
Yay I love Yards! Thanks for the info, Felicia!
Is there a difference between the taste of a firkin on a handpump and a firkin sitting on the bar?
[...] past Wednesday, Yards dropped by Hulmeville Inn with some Old Bartholomew as part of the brewery’s 10 Days of Barleywine tour. (It wraps up tonight and tomorrow; details/locations in What’s Cooking.) Anyways, Yards [...]

When he's not winning awards, CP staff writer Isaiah Thompson is out eating somewhere. Here's a shot he took for a piece that'll appear in the City Paper food section this coming Thursday, Dec. 24. Squid and chicken heart on sticks, huh? Where do you think he went?
new skewer spot in chinatown? Solo was it?
Yakitori Boy?
Roland's got it it's Solo on 10th Street. Check out Isaiah's Small Bite in our upcoming issue for more info.
I hope Solo is a good Yakitori Boy alternative--I am kind of sick of YB.
went there with a couple friends who lived in china for a couple years each. they both were very pleased, especially with the lamb + tofu. ask for the non-sweetened version of some dishes (the chicken wings, im particular) if you want it less americanized.
