It seems like we stumble on a new reason to love Artisan Boulanger Patissier (1648 S. 12th St.) each week (see here and here), the latest being their three-weeks-old hazelnut croissant. Cousin to their sweet-and-salty pistachio version, this bronze envelope boasts a filling of fudgy hazelnut paste and a crisscross of dark chocolate ganache. Nutella is the armchair comparison, but this is way beyond that, more like Nutella on buttery shards of pastry heaven.

- The Amateur Gourmet shares his favorite things of 2010, including recipes, books and restaurant meals. I will most definitely attempt Thomas Keller's roast chicken with root veggies; the step-by-step pictures make me feel a bit easier about it. - Where were you in 1995? I was probably wearing a flannel swooning over Gavin Rossdale, but Jack Curtin's Liquid Diet shares what other, more important Philadelphians were doing to shape our current state of Beertopia. Dubbed The 1995 Project, it chronicles the "where-were-they-then?" of our local beer scenesters. Cheers! - Eatocracy shares a link from the L.A. Times regarding a marijuana dispensary's unique and successful joints-for-food campaign. For every four cans of food  brought to the Santa Cruz location, one joint was given out. Trading food for weed in the name of charity. So L.A. - Hot Knives offers tips on beating the winter jiggles, including workouts I'm much more inclined to attempt because they all take place in the kitchen. There is also a helpful video showing just how effective the exercises can be. Any takers on a liver lifts partner? - Fact: my dad was given a very nice (and pricey) chorizo for his recent birthday, and he and I ate the entire thing, while standing, in a matter of moments. This slideshow on Spanish cured meats from Saveur is informative, but it makes me smile, as I reminisce about those special moments with dad. Eating chorizo. - SlashFood offers up bubbly tips for the broke ass "budget minded," listing sparkling wines under $25. Fear not, none come in jug-form. I wish you all a very happy new year. Be safe, eat more and stay sassy. XOXOXO

purple shiso sorbet
Unless you grow your own, cooking with fresh herbs often involves buying a huge bunch that winds up dying a slow, grisly death in a Ziploc tomb. When extra greenage ails you, turn to the saucepot and make simple syrup, my method for dispatching the purple shiso surplus I had from my Christmas Eve crudo. Herbal syrups can be used to sweetened tea or cocktails, or, in this case, as the base for slammin' sorbet. Try tapping your fave sushi spot for fresh shiso — the minty cinnamon-flavored Japanese herb is most often an edible garnish for scallop sashimi — or try this sorbet recipe with basil, mint or cilantro. It's easily adaptable. Your herbs will never go to waste again.

Purple Shiso Sorbet

Go Get This:
1 bunch purple shiso, plus 1 teaspoon finely chopped leaves 2 cups white sugar 4 cups water 2 oranges, juiced and strained of pulp 1 lime, juiced and strained of pulp 1 kaffir lime, zest and juice (optional) Pinch kosher salt Now Do This: Make the simple syrup by combining shiso, water and sugar in a sauce pot and bringing to a boil. Simmer over medium heat 10 minutes, allow to cool and strain twice through a cheesecloth (or wet paper towel-lined sieve) to remove all particles. Make the sorbet base by combing the shiso syrup with the citrus juices and zest and salt. Whisk to incorporate and pour into ice cream maker, according to manufacturer’s directions. During the end of the cycle, add in the chopped shiso leaves for color. Eat immediately or transfer to a container and freeze.

- Posting was a little light last week because we were in New York for Bistrot La Minette chef Peter Woolsey's turn at the prestigious James Beard House. Here's our play-by-play, blow-by-blow, curse-by-curse recollection of the proceedings. - On the cover this week: A.D. Amorosi's report on the Philadelphia Wholesale Produce Market, an extremely ambitious project coming to Southwest Philly that just might change the way the city gets its food. - Adam Erace heads down South Seventh to Café Châu, where he falls in love with the non white-boy pho, among other delicious and cheap Viet specialties. - Feeding Frenzy has details on brand-new spots like The Corner and Tyson Bees, plus tidbits on some other soon-to-open Philly concepts.

The Good Dog-associated Swift Half in the Piazza at Schmidts,  which opened in May of 2009, has announced its closing via Facebook:
New Years Eve is Swifts last night in existence. Come join us for tears, laughter, celebration, and let's drink the place dry. Thank you all for a great year and a half. We love you all.
David Snyder had some nice things to say about Swift's food and drink in April '09.

Blackbird Dining Establishment — not to be confused with the vegan pizzeria also called Blackbird, recently reviewed in CP — is moving out of the Collingswood space chef Alex Capasso established in in 2007, but it's not going far. The restaurant is packing it up at 619 Collings Avenue and reopening at 714 Haddon Avenue, a shared address with Capasso's recently opened West Side Gravy. Capasso plans on bringing the price point down a little for the restaurant, slated to debut in its new digs in mid-February. UPDATE: Thanks to Michael Savett over at Gluten Free Philly, who reminds us that Indian restaurant IndeBlue will be moving across the street to take over Blackbird's current space (it'll happen March 1).
