Was leaving CP HQ yesterday evening and happened upon chef Tyson Wong Ophaso's Tyson Bees truck parked on the corner of Third and Market. Ophaso and his guys Cliff Asavadejpakdee and Jacky Li were in Old City to cater to the crowd checking out Yis "NoseGo" Goodwin's opening at Stupid Easy; Goodwin's the one who gave the Asian street food-dispensing truck that incredible paint job. We scarfed down a cheesy kimchi quesadilla, edamame tofu taco and pork banh mi with a gang of pickled veg before waving the white flag; though there will be some staples on the menu (it'll be tight — usually no more than 10 items), Ophaso anticipates keeping things fresh by switching up offerings on the regular. Tyson Bees' steady post-up is 33rd and Spruce, weekdays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., with weeknights and weekends reserved for roaming the city. They'll have a Twitter account up and running soon.

We're on the search for a couple awesome interns to join Team Meal Ticket beginning in January 2011. If you're interested in applying — full details after the jump — get in touch no later than Wed., Dec. 29 Mon., Jan. 3. Team Meal Ticket is in need of a smart, quick, dedicated 21+ food geek in possession of a digital camera, an obsessive attention to detail and a lust to know everything there is to know about the ever-expanding Philadelphia food scene. You will get a chance to create your own regular feature for this blog, as well as interview Philly’s most interesting chefs, bartenders, restaurateurs, brewers and food artisans. The position is unpaid, but perks include swanky invites to press events, a chance to accumulate quality clips for your portfolio, occasional attaboys* from the editor and cold beer(s). Food industry experience is relevant, but not necessary. A background or degree in English, Communication or Journalism makes us smile. If you want to apply, send the following to drew.lazor@citypaper.net with the subject line “Meal Ticket Internship”: - your résumé (in the body of the email) - clips, or links to previously published work (relevant to food/drink — no Michael Bublé CD reviews, please; if you don’t have any, write some!) - one SHORT paragraph on why you are our dream intern (this’ll serve as a cover letter) - one SHORT paragraph on your favorite restaurant in Philly - one SHORT paragraph on your favorite bar in Philly * Please note that attaboys may be delivered over GChat.

Once a week, Team Meal Ticket shares its latest sugar-laden fixations. Do not tell 0ur dentist. IN QUESTION: Rips! One of the most bad-for-your-teethiest sugary treats this side of cotton candy. Similar in appearance to Haribo's Fruity Pasta, Rips come in two flavors (strawberry and green apple) and aren't quite as sour as they may appear. They're also technically licorice, which is weird and a lot of people refuse to believe it. BELIEVE IT Y'ALL AVAILABLE AT: We buy Rips all over the place, but mainly at the 7-Eleven at 22nd and Lombard (they hang up by the counter near the pork rinds so you know they're good!) and the Rite-Aid at 23rd and Walnut. HOW MANY DO WE TYPICALLY EAT IN ONE SITTING: Entire bags of Rips have been consumed in one sitting at various points in our dark/checkered past, but that is not advisable. Eat less than that. FINER POINTS: Rips are a fine candy indeed, but one of the biggest reasons we like them so much is the boastful catchphrase emblazoned across the bag: "Innovation in Licorice." Rips are certainly more elaborate than, say, Twizzlers or those black licorice bites people who grew up during The Depression eat, but such sloganeering suggests that they're on par with heady discoveries like WiFi or that car camera that helps old people parallel park, and that in and of itself is hilarious. Rips = Kanye.

While you won't catch Meal Ticket hating on Bugles, Chuckles and other denizens of the run-of-the-mill vending machine, we admit sometimes it would be nice to have a healthier on-the-go option. Enter Snack Like a Local. In February, computer programmer Meg Widholm will roll out the first of these "clean conscious, clean snacks" vending machines. The digital goodie boxes will be refurbished from older models and stocked with B.T. Brownies, Greenwood Kitchen kale chips, Motley Fuel energy bars and other local snacks, including vegan, sugar-free and gluten-free options, with 5 percent of all proceeds benefiting a charity of the month. "This is a big life jump for me," the South Philly resident says, "but I've always had a passion for fair-trade and local foods." No spots are set yet, but Widholm is targeting public locations. "All people should have access to good, locally made food on the go."

Carmen Cappello at The Wishing Well (767 S. Ninth St.) has debuted a new brunch menu. The menu's an attempt to go a little easier on the meat and offer more vegetarian options, like the new pumpkin bread French toast served with cranberry compote (you can now also order pumpkin bread as a side) and a create-your-own omelette feature. But for the meat-loving crowd, options still abound, including a SHAME omelette (an eggy version of their scrapple-topped SHAME burger) and "The Hangover Bowl." Described as a "bowl of gluttony" by barback Erik Endsley, it's layered with comfort food: grits, smoked cheddar, bacon, roasted tomato, home fries and a couple soft-poached eggs, all covered in sawmill gravy. Brunch is served from 11 to 4 on Saturdays and Sundays, and for that real hangover cure — keep drinking! — get the brunch special: $25 gets you a brunch entrée and endless Bloody Marys or mimosas. Menu after the jump.

The Corner (102 S. 13th St.), a resto redo of cocktail bar APO, previewed yesterday evening in support of its opening night (tonight!). We dropped in for a peek at the new space, worked over by owners Tony Rim and Drew Milstein, and the menu, from chef Scott Swiderski (formerly of Buddakan) and his sous John Taus (last of Snackbar). APO's ample ground-floor drinking space has been converted into banquette and open booth seating, while the long bar toward the rear of the space now serves as a narrow-but-bustling open kitchen with a bit of stool seating. (It's fun to watch the kitchen guys sending plates from the far end of the kitchen to the pass up front; all the timing and finesse of a relay race, without any of that pesky sprinting.) Swiderski's comfort food-ish menu is tight, with small sections of starters (peep the ridiculously good "shrimp in a blanket," head-on prawns wrapped in noodle-like fried kataifi), salads, entrées (burgers, sandwiches ... the apple cider-brined, batter-less fried chicken was ill) and veggie sides. On the drinking end of spectrum, they're offering some classics (a nice Sazerac) as well as some house originals (the whimsically named "Burning in Water, Drowning in Flame" combines reposado, super-smoky mezcal, green apple, lime, cayenne pepper and bitters). UPDATE: Check out The Corner's dinner, dessert and drink menus after the jump.

mixedspecies on Etsy
- Looking for a Christmas present both edible AND creepy? Well, of course Etsy has got you covered. Introducing Brief Jerky, made by mixedspecies. Yes, it is underwear made out of beef jerky. - Whatever your stance on foie gras is, I think you should read this fascinating and very well-written article, entitled The Physiology of Foie: Why Foie Gras is Not Unethical. It's informative, funny and fair — what more could you ask for? Props to Serious Eats, although I should throw out a warning: Some of the descriptions might be a little hard to take for the PETA-inclined. - Grub Street Philadelphia weighs in on their Top 5 pork dishes city-wide. What do you think of their picks? As for their pics, I think they are gorgeous. See what I did there? - Just in time for this viciously cold weather we're having, 22nd & Philly waxes poetic about their favorite hot chocolates. Just reading about it makes me feel all warm and cozy. - FoodZings points out how potlucks can be classy affairs. Just look at the menu to get an idea — beet dip, coq au vin, rabbit stew. Leave your taco dip at home, scrubs!

I find the foie gras piece completely self righteous and self serving! If it's such a great experience for the ducks (and as we all know, they're only here on earth for your pleasure) why do you feel compelled to go to such great lengths to justify your appetite? Just say say you like it and you want to eat it. That's all that really matters. Since you obviously don't care for the animals and you obviously don't think about how eating at the very tippy top of the food chain "animalizes" starving people all over the world (including here in America where people experience the the "good" starving) who might make use of the three 240g servings of grain, why do you need everyone to tell you it's ok? Just eat it and shut up about it. Your whiny intellectualizing demeans the ducks!!
AS Cat Stevens (google it) said, "You're still young, that's your fault. There's so much you have to go through." The good news is you will live long enough to see that you are wrong. The planet is already telling you that the way you want to eat, feel entitled to eat, is not sustainable. You, and that bunch of applauding sycophants, are just not listening.

I've never eaten Foie Gras in my life; but that's just my choice. I thought i'd share an article that I found interesting, and im glad you feel so passionate about it. I've never read anything (this well written) about the pro-side, so I'm glad I could put it out there.

Colosseo Pizzeria (1501 Spring Garden St., 215-751-0200) is now open in Fairmount, and we stopped by earlier this week for a peek. Partners Sal Mannino and Pino Villico are veterans of the Philly pizza game, with ties to J&J in South Philly and Mamma Mia's off Rittenhouse. Mannino designed the duel brick ovens showcased in the bright 15-table dining room. The menu is centered around pizza, but also includes pasta, panini, and some interesting appetizers (tripe, arancini, grilled calamari). Colosseo is open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner from 7  a.m. to 11 p.m.

I've been in there a number of times since they opened and LOVE their pizza! I've had a few different kinds and they are all excellent. I will definitely be a "regular" here.

Kibitz Room, which opened at 1521 Locust in the spring of 2009, has been taken over real estate broker Allan Domb and converted into Schlesinger's — still a Jewish deli, but now run by Louis Barson of Merion's Hymie's. The deli, which is open now, is in the process of being updated (new booths on the way); they've also expanded hours to seven days a week, beginning at 7 a.m. for breakfast and running through 8 p.m. for dinner (takeout, delivery and catering too). Here's Schlesinger's menu (PDF), which now includes an expanded sandwich lineup (burgers, four kinds of reuben) and various entrées.

Independence Blue Cross may be the city’s largest health insurer, but it’s unless April through October, when their catchy aging-is-fun! commercials set the soundtrack to our Phillies season, we tend not to spend much time thinking about them. Their recently launched Healthy Steps program might change that. In an effort to prevent Philadelphia from coming down with all sorts of unhealthy lifestyle-related ailments (some of which Meal Ticket is directly responsible for), IBX developed a nifty Facebook page loaded with healthy recipes, cooking tips and videos from Phils’ dietician Katie Cavuto-Boyle. Just “Like” it for access; 1,130 other people already have. Eating right is the first phase of Healthy Steps, soon to be followed by a focus on fitness and exercise. We feel healthier already. Now please pass the rillettes.
