- The lead piece in CP's latest Book Quarterly casts an eye on the manymanymany cookbooks out there just waiting to be scooped up for the holiday gift-giving season. Justin Bauer and Char Vandermeer recipe-test tomes from Mark Bittman, Nigella Lawson, Dorie Greenspan and more, breaking down which are the belt-busting best. - Adam Erace raps about the wraps at Philadelphia Chutney Co., finding that most all the dosa and uttapa renditions at this vegetarian quick-serve Indian street food joint are on point. - The Founding Foodies examines the eating/drinking habits of American icons like Washington, Jefferson and Franklin, and how their hobbies, professions, likes and dislikes shaped the culture of the time and influenced how we eat today. - There are some good food events scheduled in this, the calm before the pre-NYE storm. Check out What's Cooking for word on an Iron Chef tasting menu, a very Jewish Christmas celebration and more. - Shot Tower Coffee, Marabella Meatball Co. and Kennett — all brand-new, and all detailed in the latest Feeding Frenzy.

UPDATE [03jan10]: Here's the full photo tour of The Dandelion's now-completed interior. Quasi-crashed a staff beer tasting at The Dandelion, Stephen Starr's English-minded pub at 18th and Sansom, and snagged a handful of pics of the still-very-much-under-construction interior.
Get the flash player here: http://www.adobe.com/flashplayer
Set (at this point) to open the week after Christmas, the space is a combination of what was Mantra and the former Stiletto shoe store, meaning it's huuuge. It's spread out over six distinct rooms on two floors; they aim to have a stroll through The Dandelion feel like a walk through a rich old person's home, if that rich old person's interior designer was Shawn Hausman (Butcher & Singer, Parc). Many design elements have been brought over from England, from wall paint and tiling to rugs and upholstered bar stools. Above, check out a few shots of what's being referred to informally as "the dog room," since it's decorated from end to end with canine-related artwork and tchotkes (doggy curtains, too!) The servers and barstaff, under the tutelage of SRO beverage manager Jay Willard, tasted through a bunch of beers off the bottle/can list, which includes UK standbys (Boddington's, Samuel Smith Nut Brown Ale, Belhaven Wee Heavy), other Euro fare (Weihenstephaner hefeweizen, Triple Karmeliet) and American crafts aplenty (Sly Fox Phoenix Pale Ale, Duck Rabbit Schwarzbier, Two Brothers Cane & Ebel). Drafts will be available in half pint (10-ounce) and full pint (20-ounce) glasses. "Will this make me feel like junk in the morning?" one server asked of Naragansett, which someone else had compared to kill-the-case session beers like Lager or PBR. No way dude! Drink 12. Food details we were able to glean (chef Robert Aikens' menu is not yet finalized) — they're still working on their burger, which could end up as a LaFrieda production (they're testing multiple brands, grinds, etc.); they'll do traditional "Sunday roasts" (think whole organic roast chicken or a whole prime rib roast, plus sides) on Sundays and on bank holidays, as is traditional in the UK; and there are plans eventually to launch an afternoon tea, with a dainty menu of bites both sweet and savory. Speaking of snacks, here's what you might find on The Dandelion's bar menu upon opening:
  • Roasted spiced bar nuts with rosemary
  • Fish cakes with lemon garlic mayonnaise
  • Deviled eggs
  • Grilled Welsh rarebit
  • British cheese board & Savoury biscuits
  • Smoked salmon and Trout pate, Brioche toast
  • Pickled beetroot jar with olive tapenade and goats cheese with sourdough toast
  • Chicken and duck liver parfait, Grape Chutney, Cornichons, brioche toast
  • Berkshire pork pate with wheat toast, celeriac remoulade and shallot pear chutney

Hey Dan, it was a beer tasting, with 30+ staffers taking small sips of close to 20 different beers, discussing them, etc. While I'll be the first to champion the proper glassware for the proper beers, I think the use of plastic cups for such a venture is understandable.

Hi Drew, thanks for the response. I did think about that. I imagine it may have been tough to rinse out real glasses? If anyone could afford it I would imagine Starr could. I do wonder how much plastic cups affect the taste of any beverage. I'm actually not a huge "proper" glass freak – although at least aesthetically the proper glass is nice. But I DO get a plastic funk smell when I drink out of solos. I also wonder about a beer tasting which includes pretty readily available beers like this, but I imagine you have to educate staff somehow.

To me, this place has 9+ dollar beers written all over it. Don't get me wrong I bet the food will be good, the environment nice and the beer selection decent, but I can get all that and not get racked over the proverbial coals elsewhere. I hope I'm wrong b/c otherwise this looks like it could be a swell time.

Oh, and I agree, who drinks Triple Karmeliet out of solos?

I ate here last night. Three roll special is a great deal and the sushi was incredibly fresh and delicious. The guys who work there are all very sweet, too. Next time I have more than $10 in my pocket I might splurge on some appetizers.

A ways off, but good news for time-strapped Graduate Hospital denizens Matt Levinson, a hospitality/hotel management vet (he opened The Borgata), is working on a low-price, low-stress takeout for 1511 South Street called The Quick Fixx. The concept: Built-to-order salads, pasta dishes and French bread pizzas ("The food that I know I'm always looking for," says Levinson), all prepared fresh in under 10 minutes, and all under $10. It'll be a hub for both takeout and delivery, and Levinson says The Quick Fixx will also feature a DVD rental kiosk. Expect a mid-March or early April opening. Ooh, maybe Tron: Legacy will be out on Blu-Ray by then! UPDATE: Forgot to mention earlier Levinson is hunting for a good exec chef for the Fixx. If you're interested in applying, contact him at mattylevinson@aol.com.

two of my favorite dishes there - the portuguese sausage and clams and the lemongrass eggplant and scallop hot pot. Both incredible.

Used to eat there all the time...not sure why I haven't been there in a while.

A fair question indeed! The soup itself was killer. The crab was already dead so cannot speak to his fighting abilities.

I'll take that, Mat! It's Tai Lake right off 10th and Race. Best Chinese seafood spot around. A friend of my mom's, who is Chinese, once tried to recommend a Philly Chinatown restaurant to me, and his only descriptor was "it has fishtanks in the front." While that describes like 6,000 places in Chinatown, I'm fairly certain this was what he meant.

Our Dec. 6 post revealing the Four Loko tasting menu Adsum chef Matt Levin served this past Monday night has been the most-viewed post here on Meal Ticket for more than a week — people really love reading/talking about the Loko! This includes CNN's Eatocracy blog, which put together this video feature on the event. (Shoutout to interviewee Brian, aka The Skinny Fat Kid. He did a two-part recap of the evening.) Both Levin and Adsum owner Kar Vivekananthan have hinted that there might be a Loko stockpile somewhere deep in the bowels of the restaurant. Maybe if you ask nice?

The Devil's Toothpaste. That's how we like to describe n'duja, the fiery spreadable pork salami native to Calabria. (Say it en-doo-yuh, like the beginning of "andouille.") Charcuterie beast Nick Macri, who cooks at Southwark (701 S. Fourth St.), comes from a Calabrian family; he combines pork fat and pork (a 3-to-1 ratio; that's how you get the spreadability) with ungodly amounts of red chili pepper, which turns the fat cast off during the curing process the near-neon hue of fruit punch Kool-Aid. When it's ready (it's running as an $8 special until Macri's current batch runs out), they spread the n'duja over toasted baguette and top it off with cubes of young pecorino, pickled red onion and fava bean shoots. These additions temper the hothotheat a little bit, but if you're sensitive about such things, this is not the salumi you are looking for. Us? We're spicy-food fanatics. We're not sure if they make it this goddamn satanic over there in the motherland, but if they do, we're booking a trip. Eat this immediately!

Okay!!! I have been waiting years for N'duja to make its stateside mainstream debut! I cant tell you how many bottles iv had confiscated at the airport as if they were uncut columbian cocaine, or a Nigerian toner cartridge. Thank you for writing this and thanks to Southwark for doing it!

I am delighted that old time Calabrese tradition has arrived at Southwark. This delight as presented by Nicola Macri' looks absolutely scrumptuous. The pork spread infused by special condiments and a hint of peperoncino can only embrace the palate sending a unique sensation to the taste buds. A glass of pinot grigio red or a savigion cabernet would compliment this dish. Congratulations to the chef.

My cat Riley says THANKS FOR VOTING!
It appears as though I have been chosen as "Phoodie of the Year" in the second annual Philebrity Awards. At the risk of sounding treacly, I just wanted to extend a sincere thanks to anyone who voted. I certainly wasn't expecting to be nominated in the first place, which makes winning all the more surprising and flattering. (That's not to say that CP wasn't guilty of a little promosexual activity!) Anyways, Team Meal Ticket — Adam Erace, plus our tireless interns Rachel Burgos, Anthony Sica and Juliana Reyes — works super hard on creating original content for this silly little blog, so it's really, really satisfying to hear that y'all enjoy reading it. And an XL shoutout to the other nominees, as well — Han Chiang from Han Dynasty, Marc Vetri, Marcie Turney and Valerie Safran, and Kate Carrara from the Buttercream cupcake truck. So thank you once more, and I'll try my damndest to live up to your "Phoodie of the Year" standards, whatever they may be — I'll buy you a drink, but I ain't buying you dinner. Cheers, and see y'all!

If you've been to (or at least read about) Barbuzzo (110 S. 13th St.), you're likely familiar with pastry chef Erin Stafford's salted caramel budino dessert, which CP critic Adam Erace described as "dreamy" and "sensual" in his recent review (are we gonna have to turn the food hose on you, Erace? Settle down!). Now comes word that you'll be able to get six-packs of the vanilla/caramel/chocolate/sea salt dessert via Barbuzzo's website (pick up at restaurant). The sixers — you get the jars for keepsies and everything — cost $45 (they're $8 a pop at dinner). Please do not buy this for us as we will eat all six at once and then grow wings made of sugar and fly into the sun.
