Well, we've still got a little while to go before but we would like to let you know that when 5 o'clock hits Franklin Mortgage (112. S 18th St.) is the place to be. Head bartender, Al Sotack announced that Franklin's 14th menu is rolling out tonight with 8 classics and 20 new additions to the menu. As per usual the menu is made up of cocktails crafted by the entire staff including newcomers like Sara Justice and recently promoted Colin O'Neill.
We have to agree with Sotack, the menu is looking pretty stellar, rife with music, film and lit references. There are plenty of places in town mixing up solid cocktails but we're pretty sure that Franklin in the only place where you can choose from drinks named for Deerhunter albums and Aleister Crowley books.
If food celeb siting is your thing you'll probably want to know that the backward sun glasses sporting mayor of flavor town is in town. Fieri and his production team i.e. The Krew been making their way around several of our finest diners, drive-ins and dives such as The South Philly Taproom, Standard Tap and Sidecar over the past few days. No word yet on when this Philly-centric episode of Tripe D is going to air but if you'd like to catch Fieri IRL, we suggest swinging by one of the aformentioned diners, drive-ins and dives gastropubs today.
Romance is all well and good for some, but if you can't be bothered or just aren't quite in the mood for it this year, here's one option: creep around town with a bunch of strangers and get utterly, jubilantly shit-faced. (But, please, remember to get responsibly shit-faced.)
On Thu., Feb. 14, while countless couples are elbowing their way through the dining masses for the chance to look at each other all googly-eyed across a table laden with heart-shaped foodstuffs, you will be ponying up $5 for a lei that will grant you access to drink specials at eight bars around Fairmount on an Anti-Valentine's Day Pub Crawl. (Start at either St. Stephen's Green or London Grill; the crawl begins at 7 and wraps up "at midnight," though we all know the pub crawl really isn't over until someone does something truly disgusting or passes out at the bar.)
Over the course of the night, you'll make stops at London Grill, St. Stephen's Green, The Bishop's Collar, Brown Street Pub, Urban Saloon, Belgian Cafe, The Green Room, and Bridgid's for $4-5-6 specials on beer, wine, and cocktails. And hey, maybe you'll meet someone nice to get temporarily romantical with after all! (Proceeds from the crawl will go to benefit Project H.O.M.E., so you can feel good about yourself no matter what.)

Yesterday evening The Insider caught word that Stateside chef/best of Philly/Hop Chef champ George Sabatino has given his notice. A bit later on Stateside made if official posting a farewell note on their Facebook wall. Sabatino will be on board at Stateside until March 11th and after that is planning on opening a new spot with Jenn Conley, his finace.
Better late than never: Meal Ticket is taking the bold leap into the year 2009 with our very own Facebook page! (OK, OK, we've technically had one for a few months, but now we're actually using it.)
So if you like us—or better yet, if you like like us, omg, get out, we're blushing—won't you please also head over there and Like us?
We'll be rolling out unique content on FB over the coming weeks, so don't miss out!
Cupcakes for Valentine's Day are kind of a no-brainer, and we think these cakes from PamCakes (404 S. 20th St.) are ridic cute. (We especially love the ladybug!) And of course there's an Anti-V-Day option available as well.
The Panini of the Day over at Wedge + Fig (160 N. 3rd St.) is, appropriately, the Nemo. (More importantly, it sounds pretty good.)
What's grosser than gross? According to Tom Philpott at MoJo, 80% of all antibiotics are consumed by the meat industry.
Over at Foobooz they're reporting that Walter Abrams, exec at Le Bec 2.0 is stepping down. When asked about the situation owner Nicolas Fanucci said that Abrams was in fact still the exec, for now. But another unnamed source said that an in-house sous is taking over and Abrams is currently working out the terms of his departure.
Restaurant gossip hounds can look forward to an official statement from Le Bec early next week.
Unlike New York, L.A. and Chengdu, Philadelphia doesn't really have all that many options for Sichuan fare, aside, of course from the always awesome Han Dynasty. While strolling down Baltimore Avenue earlier in the week Meal Ticket stumbled upon Chili Szechuan (4626 Baltimore Ave.), the latest addition to the city's peppercorn and chile-laden dining scene.
Save for a bit of lorem ipsum on the website, it looks like Chili Szechuan is serving up all of our favorites including mapo tofu, cumin lamb and dry pepper chicken along with some unfamiliar items like tofu pudding and Dongpo braised pork belly.
Of course, if spice isn't your thing, it's worth a mention that Chili Szechuan has a menu of Americanized Chinese fare for the faint of heart.
The Insider dug up an very useful spreadsheet of Philly brunch spots compiled by Lee Porter of Chocolate Covered Memories that's broken down into neighborhoods and weekend dining highlights.
Grub's caught word that Jersey has issued it's first artisan distilling license for the first time since prohibition. What does that mean for all of us? More locally produced small batch liquor, namely a Jersey sweet corn bourbon.
Lookin' to drop some big bucks this weekend? Eater has lined up 15 of Philly's good lookin'est tasting menus.
Is Steven Starr opening up a Mexican place in Fishtown? Well, it's anybody's guess but Foobooz's story is pretty damned entertaining.
