Lamb tasting, a couple of our favorite things (spoiler: highly-processed meat and dogs), and asking "how old is too old?" when it comes to good spirits, all on today's Afternoon Snacks!

Because you are a sentient being that exists in this world, we assume that you've heard by now that today is the first day of spring. We hate to jump into that fray, but rest assured: the only reason we are talking about spring is because spring means lamb and lamb is what's on the menu right now at Meritage (500 S. 20th St.). Lamb chops, lamb loin, lamb kibbeh, and yes—lamb belly bao. The four-course tasting menu is set at $39 and is on tonight through Fri., Mar. 22.

Earlier this month Mike Solo and the Zahav crew popped up at Alla Spina for a pretty epic industry night with plenty of weird dancing and next month their doing it again. Unfortunately we're not going to see a repeat performance of the Harlem Shake, This time they're taking the modern Israeli show on the road with a one night only pop-up at David Chang's Momofuku Ssäm Bar (207 2nd Ave., New York) in the East Village. The dinner is happening late night (11 p.m.) on April 9 and is going for $85 including food, drinks and tip. No menu intel just yet but having frequented both Zahav and Ssäm (probably more than we should admit) we're pretty sure that it going to be next level. So book those Megabus tickets and reserve your spot at reservations@momofuku.com.

Tonight's shaping up to be quite the evening for openings. We already know where we'll be having dinner (ahem, Pizzeria Beddia) but afterwards we're going to be making our way back down south for the grand opening of the revamped Dolphin (1539 S. Broad St.) From the minds of Making Time's Dave P., Best Philadelphian/R5 founder Sean Agnew and the good people behind Union Transfer and Morgan's Pier, we've got high hopes for The Dolphin especially after taking a look at the line up for the rest of March. They've got a super solid line up of DJs six nights a week including Tim Sweeney of Beats in Space, The Rapture's Vito and Druzzi and L-Vis 1990. The site's live so head on over to check out the full schedule including featured dancers.

Editor's Note: Hello and welcome to the second installment of Ask Meal Ticket, out new weekly advice column for all things food and drink related. This week we're pleased to announce that we have a guest advice-giver, none other than Phyllis Stein-Novack, our number one favorite restaurant critic from the South Philly Review. Got a food Q for us? Just email caroline@citypaper.net and we'll get on the case. So without further ado...take it way PSN!

Dear Meal Ticket, Love your blog, I read it every day!  I've had a food question that I have had no luck in getting an answer. Is there any place in our area that serves pho that is MSG-free?? I have an awful allergy to it (causes instant migraine), and I love noodle soups, but everyone has told me that pho has tons of MSG in it.  Is there any place where I can enjoy a tasty bowl and not be in pain 15 minutes later? Thanks very much!

Joanna from E. P'yunk

Dear Joanna, A number of Asian restaurants state they do not use MSG in the preparaation of their dishes. That said, the only solution is to call a few places ahead and ask. Or ask the server if a dish can be made without MSG. I would try Le Viet as their dishes are a bit more refined.

All best,

Phyllis

Well folks, it's been a long time coming but tonight Pizzeria Beddia (115 E. Girard Ave.) is officially open. Passion project of pizza enthusiast Joe Beddia, the Fishtown spot is going to be serving American-style whole pies made with Jersey tomato sauce and mozz and dough using organic flour. The streamlined menu includes housemade toppers like sausage and pickled hot peppers. Early reports have been gleaming so we're pretty stoked to check it out tonight.

Here at Meal Ticket, when we learn about a kickass meal that docks you less than five bucks, we feel obligated to shout the good news from, well, our laptops. Which is why we’re calling your immediate attention to Hemo’s (38th and Walnut) and their breakfasty budget buy, the $2.25 bacon, egg and cheese sub. Seventy-five more cents will double your sandwich lengthwise. Get it with teriyaki or BBQ sauce, or dress it up all fancy-like with one of the cart’s signature addictions, Hemo Sauce or Hemo II Sauce. The first has mustard, and the second doesn’t. But it’s anyone’s guess what else is in the stuff because its makers’ lips are sealed.

We’re gonna guess that it’s not every day you get to taste runny egg yolk and savory jus – just as they start to seep into soft hoagie – for less than the price of two SEPTA tokens. Unless you live in West Philly, in which case, knock yourself out.

We spotted this snazzy logo for Pizzeria Vetri a little earlier today on the ol' Instagram and this afternoon Eater is telling us that they're planning on slingin' pie beginning sometime in the early summer.

Countdown to opening day just got a little more heated. Foobooz has got official word that our favorite/only chicken and donut joint Federal Donuts is opening up shop in Citizen's Bank Park. Sorry, no fancies folks.

Ladies and gentlemen, a round of applause for our hometown James Beard finalists: Amis' Brad Spence, Vetri for service, local journos Joy Manning, Aliza Green and Lari Robling and Monica Rogozinski of WHYY.

Today's Snacks has ginger beer with a kick to kick off spring, a zebra menu (no, not like that), and the easiest and most useful DIY project we've seen in a while.

As fantastic as ginger beer is, we assume we're not alone in occasionally wishing it were actually, you know, beer. Enter Crabbie's, a Scottish import that is refreshing and spicy and gingery, but is also alcoholic. At 4.8% ABV and meant to be served on the rocks, it's a nice change of pace from the hefty winter beers we've been nursing. So it makes sense that Crabbie's is the guest of honor tomorrow night at Growlers (736 S. 8th St.) to celebrate the first day of spring. They'll be letting the classic go for just $3 (over ice, with a twist), and a few ginger beer cocktails will also be available for $5 (a shot of rum makes it a Dark and Crabbie's).

Are you a South Philadelphian who's had a hole in your brunch routine since Carman's shuttered a few months back? Well, Passyunk Post has some good news for you. They sat down with Christine Liskowicz and chatted about Porto, the Portuguese-influenced breakfast and lunch spot that she's opening in the 11th and Wharton corner. With plans to open sometime at the end of May to middle of June, Liskowicz is thinking a menu of sandwiches and with the possibility of a Friday night BYOB tasting menu.
