This drizzly afternoon seems like the perfect time to share one of the weekend's warmer happenings: the Fishtown Neighbors Association 3rd Annual Chili Cook-Off. If it seems like we've been telling you about a lot of chili cook-offs as of late that's because there have been plenty. This one sets itself apart from the rest in that it's no amateur competition, the contenders here are professionals. The $15 ticket gets you tastes of beefy, beany creations from the up and coming Cedar Point Bar and Kitchen and Loco Pez plus heat-quenching brews from PBC and Neshaminy Creek and a churned to order batch of Maryland BBQ ice cream courtesy of Little Baby's. The cook-off is happening on Sunday from 1-4 p.m. at The Skybox (2424 E. York Ave.) for advanced tickets head to fishtown.org.
The eponym behind Vernick Food & Drink (2031 Walnut St.) is pulling a Ferris and proving the timelessness of that truism, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”
On any other day of the week, Vernick feasts on family lunch (a salad, a vegetable, a protein) with his kitchen staff. “It’s always created from the trim we produce,” the chef says. He adds that sometimes it's hard to distinguish exactly what's in the meal. "But we’re typically so hungry by that time that it doesn’t matter.”
Mondays, though, the restaurant closes, leaving Vernick free to roam. He’s got a penchant for the sandwiches at Rotisseur (102 S. 21st St.) and the breakfast items at Ants Pants Café (2212 South St.), but today he hit up Mama’s Vegetarian (18 S. 20th St) for a spicy falafel pita. Righteous choice, dude.

So we told you all about the collaborative dinners going down at Circles Thai (812 N. 2nd St.). Then we told you about a bunch of changes made to that schedule, including the addition of George Sabatino to John Taus' meal. Meanwhile, we found out this week that Sabatino's next career stop is going to be amazing, but that we'll have to wait a while for the Morgan's Pier season to start back up before we can get to our collective oohing and aahing.
Which is all a very long and convoluted way of getting to the fact that the menu for the Taus-Sabatino dinner is out and THAI SCRAPPLE. The menu says a bunch of other seriously interesting things too but THAI SCRAPPLE. The dinner is on Thu., Mar. 28 and still costs $50; if you need more motivation than Thai scrapple, you can find the rest of the menu after the jump.
Congee, beef jerky, and smoked duck wings, right this way! »

We've been sitting on this one for a while now so we're pretty stoked to finally be able to announce the official line up for Ommegang's Hop Chef 2013. This year's roster is filled with some pretty serious talent: breakout Philly newcomer Eli Kulp of Fork, charcuter extraordinaire Nick Macri of Southwark, man of the people Pat Szoke from The Industry, taco whisper Lucio Palazzo of La Calaca Feliz, Italian pub grub pusher Mike Deganis of Alla Spina and farm to tabler Yun Fuentes of JG Domestic.
This year's competition is going down on Tuesday, April 23rd at Union Transfer and tickets are available right here.
Ommegang's Hop Chef is a competition based on five pairing principles: "Simple pairing, a direct interaction between food and beer; Incorporation, utilizing beer in the cooking process; Mimicking, matching the flavor profile of a dish with the flavor profile of a beer; Story telling, tracing the history of the dish and the beer; and Experimental, making beer the star of the dish." But if you ask us, the highlight of last year's Hop Chef was the hilariously cut throat Twitter shit talking battle that lead up to the main event. Follow along using the #HopChef hash tag and we promise you will not be disappointed.
We love beer and we love dinner so obviously we love a good beer dinner. Here are two that we're really looking forward to coming from two of MT's favorite Twitter personalities, Suzy Woods from Allagash a.k.a. Beer Lass and Sommillionaire i.e. Steve Wildy of Alla Spina.
This Allagash/Han Dynasty (108 Chestnut St.) dinner might be sold out (we'll keep you posted about any cancellations) but it's the kick off of an ongoing series and the menu is too good not to share.
In this week's In Season, I told you all about kale, and talked to Kennett chef Brian Ricci, the man credited with kicking off Philly's kale salad craze. (I think it even preceded the New York kale salad craze.) Below is the recipe for the two-step bowl o' green that started it all; in cheffy fashion, the measurements are in grams. To convert to ounces, multiply by 28.349. A little arithmetic with your dinner.

Fish Fridays: Paesano's rolls out a good lookin' yellow fin sole sandwich.
If you haven't already noticed Meal Ticket is taking a semi-sick day today but this piece of super duper important news has to be shared. Foobooz is reporting that Best of Philly-Hop Chef Champ-all-around awesome dude George Sabatino is doing a summer residency at our favorite summertime hang, Morgan's Pier (221 N. Columbus Blvd.). Pretty fantastic news, right? FB is staying that he's planning on sharable plates like whole fish and suckling pigs plus a next level liquid nitrogen Rocket Ship Burger.
We were already counting the days to sipping Watermelon Rickys on the Delaware and with the addition of Sabatino, well, let's just say we'll see you there on opening day.
Irish fries to sop up this weekend's alcohol intake, another Friday fish sandwich, and some free cocktail education, on today's Afternoon Snacks!
Because it wouldn't be St. Patrick's Day without some spuds: Shake Shack (2000 Sansom St.) has a fry special dubbed When Irish Fries Are Smiling (no, really) available now through Sun., Mar. 17. This time around, their familiar crinkle-cuts are topped with horseradish cream, scallions and bacon for $4.
