Stock up on native flora while you drink up on Pub & Kitchen's (1946 Lombard St.) field trip to Bartram's Garden's spring plant sale this Sat., May 1. The P&K crew is so keen on America's oldest living botanical garden that they're running a shuttle bus from the restaurant to the historic 18th-century site, where they'll pour complimentary Yards Saison for shoppers browsing native edible plants, fruiting shrubs, perennials and trees from noon-3 p.m. Visitors may also tour John Bartram's house, barn and the cider press carved from bedrock, as well as take in the meadow, parkland, wetlands and riverside trail of the Quaker naturalist's estate, just a ten minute drive from Center City.

In February, we posted about a casting call for Food Network's 24 Hour Restaurant Battle, and asked any locals trying out to let us know. Turns out that a Philly couple made the cut. Lisa Fernandez, a full-time student and brain trauma clinician at the Philadelphia College of Medicine, and her boyfriend Zack Gaynor, a former manager at Maggiano's and Bahama Breeze, just finishing filming for the show, a restaurant-based competition between two teams of two. The episode — which we hear involves the couple serving the judges something involving Philly's own ROOT liquor — will air in late June or early July.

In just a few weeks, the brains of beer drinkers in town will be all a-ferment, bubbling with enthusiasm for our third annual Philly Beer Week. On Fri., June 4, Mayor Michael Nutter will wield the Keg Hammer of Glory to break into the first keg at the local brew-oriented Opening Tap festival ($45) in the Independence Visitor's Center in Old City. Even East Philadelphia (better known as the proximal towns of New Jersey) is getting into the act this year -- you can take free tours of Flying Fish in Cherry Hill and Iron Hill Maple Shade on Sat., June 5, then be ferried around by free trolley from the PATCO station and pub-to-pub when you hit the Haddon Township Pub Crawl. Opening weekend promises to be sheer madness, especially since it coincides with the 26th annual Philadelphia International Cycling Championship on Sun., June 6. Manayunk venues like Cooper's Brick Oven Pizza & Wine Bar and the Old Eagle Tavern have already planned bike-race parties and brunches. Participating bars and restaurants have already begun loading their events into the Beer Week calendar that lives on the right sidebar of the website. Search by brewery, venue or date to find your can't-miss events.

All our years, we never thought a fast-food menu item would be able to afflict a nation with a case of hang-wringing existential strife. That was, of course, before KFC introduced the Double Down "sandwich," which swaps out a bun for two chicken patties. It's gross, yes — but it's also nothing more than a protein-heavy, attention-commanding gimmick, and branding it as some sort of bacon-laden Tool of Lucifer does nothing more than bolster its already-formidable notoriety. There are far too many writeups accusing the thing of being evil incarnate to even begin linking here, which leads us to our point: If y'all really wanted to protest the implementation of the Double Down, you wouldn't have bought it — better yet, you wouldn't have high-horse blogged about it 9 million times over. Plus, come on — The Wendy's Baconator?! The Baconator is so much more badass bad for you. KFC, apparently, is looking to neutralize its local detractors/unwitting supporters by making some charitable donations. The chain, riding high on all this feigned first-world outrage, has announced that they're giving more than 3,000 buns — the ones they "didn't use" in the Double Down production process, snickersnicker — and a monetary donation, to the Food Bank of South Jersey, right across the bridge in Pennsauken.

Daniel McLaughlin culminates each month's diet with a multi-course feast open to the public.
Daniel McLaughlin wants to free you from your food phobias, and that's why he's eating a different diet each month of 2010. "I was curious," he writes on his blog The Thirteenth Diet, "How can there be so many mainstream diets in our country where people can scientifically prove opposing theories and still be right?" From macrobiotics in January to Ayurvedic in August, Philadelphia resident McLaughlin takes to one prescribed way of eating (see all twelve diets here) each month, experimenting with recipes and techniques to make delicious meals meant to persuade doubters they, too, can live happy and healthy on diets perceived as restrictive. "I'm just a normal person, not some astrophysicist of food," says McLaughlin, who designs and builds furniture, as well as serving tables at Old City's Amada at night. "I give myself 30 days to really explore each diet and learn its inner workings. The end result is taking shape --I'm trying to form "the thirteenth diet"... that takes parts from all of these mainstream diets to create a 'super diet'." Self-educated in nutrition, McLaughlin was accepted to the Institute of Integrative Nutrition in NYC last year, but ultimately decided it was not the right place for him. "I wanted to be a food therapist," he said, "but it seemed limited in scope. This project will allow me to reach a much broader range of people," he said, adding that he has plans for a book based on the yearlong project. To demonstrate the pleasure, rather than privation of eating according to a diet, McLaughlin cooks and hosts a feast in the last days of the month in his South Philadelphia home, dubbed Wharton Heights. April's Gluten-Free Feast, a single seating of 24 people, will happen this Fri., April 30 at 7 p.m. Interested parties may reserve a space for the five-course meal by filling out the contact form on The Thirteenth Diet's website, or by visiting their Facebook page. You can see the menu, which includes bread, gnocchi and other typically glutinous treats, here. Word-of-mouth buzz may make future feasts a harder ticket to come by; producers from WHYY's radio show "A Chef's Table" will be recording Friday's celiac-friendly event. When I suggest people may react negatively to his project based on the unfun connotations of the little word diet, McLaughlin responds with self-deprecating mirth. "You know, I saw that KFC Double Down commercial and I thought, 'the world needs me more than ever!' "We've been trained and marketed to to want extreme sweets and salts, but when you start eating right your palate adjusts and you don't want that anymore... in the traditional sense of the word, diet means the food you eat every day, as your way of life. Everyone should be on a diet."

This Thursday, April 29, more than 200 area restaurants will donate 33 percent of customers' food bills to fund HIV/AIDS organizations. ActionAIDS, the Philly-based group that coordinates this annual event, formed in 1986 and is now the single largest service organization in the region. The org's mission is to enhance the lives of those afflicted by HIV/AIDS, provide education to the surrounding community and offer preventative services and teach advocacy. Proceeds from restaurants will also benefit HIV/AIDS services at the AIDS Coalition of Southern New Jersey, AIDS Delaware, Family and Community Service of Delaware County, Planned Parenthood of Bucks County and Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania. You can search participating restaurants by cuisine, meal time, or region on Dining Out for Life's website. Don't forget to fill out an envelope to win an Apple Vacations trip for two to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic (the winner will be announced in May). Should you feel a bit more generous, additional donations can be tucked inside your raffle envelope. "Anyone who donates $25 or more will receive a ‘thank you' note and a 20% Off Tuesdays card in the mail,” says Michael Byrne of ActionAIDS. "There are over 50 participating restaurants in the region, and 30 are right here in Philadelphia. There are some great places." Use the card any Tuesday for the rest of the year to claim your discount, as long as it's not a holiday or combined with other promotions.

Happy Hour is a place to vent daily frustrations and unwind, a time to reconnect with friends and coworkers you don't mind seeing beyond the boundaries of Cubicle Land. It's is also the ideal time to score a deal on your favorite gustatives and gulpables. Although my work scenario has me behind a kitchen prep station rather than a desk, I can appreciate HH just the same. For this feature, I'll hop bar by bar to HHs across the area and report back to Meal Ticket every Tuesday. If you've been to this week's featured HH, tell us about it in the comments. I want recommendations for future trips, too! Let's delve into it at FARMiCiA. WHERE YOU AT? A red doorway, wooden window frames, brick walls and red flags waving above assure you that you've made it to FARMiCiA (15 S. Third St.) in Old City. Once inside, however, city life seems far away. Exposed ceilings painted gray and lined with copper tiling, flowers and trees (some artificial), fresh apples garnishing each table and a mounted flowerpot behind an ajar red barn door practically sing “the hills are alive." Even at the tin FARM bar I feel like I'm in a hacienda, staring at a liquid inventory stashed in carved-out shelving backed by another red barn door. Distressed wood floor panels, dark wooden tables and red leather chairs make it all very farmhouse chic. WHAT'S THE SCENE? I commissioned my mother for this research session even though she admitted to be a bit wary of happy hours. In her mind people would be getting crazy and she'd end up with someone's drink on her blouse. She needn't have worried. A thin crowd was most likely due to the rain, said barkeep extraordinaire Ed Jones. Then a young guy wandered in, and after much indecision, plopped down at the bar with us. A trend I have noticed as of late is babies at the bar. A corporate-clad man came in alone, then shortly after raced out the door and returned with an occupied baby carrier. He later relocated to a table in the dining room with his family and was replaced by two middle-aged couples and another wanderer, this time a woman. A few young, martini-loving girls gathered at a table in the bar area. WHAT'S THE DEAL? Jones told us Happy Hour features half-off any drink and runs Tuesday to Friday from 5 to 7 p.m.; you can snag the same deals at brunch on Saturdays and Sundays from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. That's any drink whether you like chocolate martinis like Momma D, shots like Momma D's imaginary happy hour regulars or one of the several intriguing infused boozes on hand, like me. As a sucker for spice and Asian flavors, I fell in love with Jones' Thai-kill-ya, tequila spiked with Thai chilies and Kaffir lime leaves hit with lemongrass syrup and a spritz of soda water. This first infusion led naturally to another: enter the Mumbai Fizz, gin infused with coriander, cardamom, bay leaf, mustard seed, allspice (and a few secrets) with a fig puree and soda water. I also tried the St. Germain Cocktail of Champagne, elderflower liqueur and soda water, a sweet concoction in comparison to my other choices.

Sorry, Ponch (can I call you "Ponch"?), no food specials for happy hour but there is a reasonably priced bar menu. We ordered the cheese platter with chutney, toasted baguette slices and three cheeses (feta, smoked goat and cheddar) - a delicious and filling snack. I think it was about $11. Renaissance Sausage on Facebook
You might've noticed an unfamiliar name on the 2010 Headhouse Farmers Market vendor directory we posted earlier — Renaissance Sausage is a brand-new truck, making its debut at the market this Sunday, that specializes in handmade sausage sandwiches crafted using locally sourced and organic ingredients. Partners Dan Semko and Bret Cavanaugh, longtime friends and natives of Lambertville, New Jersey, both have food-biz experience; they pair cut their teeth in the mobile game, though, selling breakfast burritos and sandwiches out of a '70s-era VW bus tricked out into a kitchen down in Charleston, South Carolina. This Sunday, the Renaissance truck'll be at the market for its duration (10 a.m.-2 p.m.), offering several sausage sandwich varieties (details after the jump — they've got a veg option!), plus sides like slaw, potato salad and wild rice/wheat berry salad. From 10 to 11 a.m., Semko adds, they'll offer a sausage, egg and cheese breakfast sandwich special featuring (yes) organic American. They'll be a fixture at Headhouse on Sundays this season, but Semko says they also plan on dedicating four days a week to locations around the city — nothing's finalized yet, but they're considering spots on Spring Garden near NoLibs and on Washington Avenue in South Philly. They're also on Facebook and Twitter. Country Herb Sausage: An all natural pork sausage with a blend fresh sage and thyme, enhanced with a kick of cayenne pepper, and topped with caramelized onions. Served to order on a local bakery fresh roll. Mediterranean Sausage: Lancaster Lamb and Beef enhanced with a blend of traditional Mediterranean spices, served on a local bakery fresh roll layered with fresh hummus and a tahini dressed cucumber, red onion, tomato and feta salad. The sandwich is finished with a homemade yogurt sauce and a fresh mint garnish. Asian Chicken Sausage: Local Organic Free Range Chicken Sausage enhanced with oriental herbs and spices. Served on a local bakery fresh roll and topped with a spicy mango slaw. Vegetarian Sausage: This all natural meat free sausage is a blend of fresh local vegetables, herbs, spices and vegetable proteins. We took the time and care developing this delicious option so that even the most convicted meat eaters will be happy they chose it. As with all of our sausage, it is served on a local bakery fresh roll and can be topped with the choice of any our daily toppings.
