Father/daughter team Tom and Sara Block opened their flagship Naked Chocolate Café at Walnut and Juniper nearly four years ago, then expanded with University City and Rittenhouse-ish locations in the fall of '08 and the winter of '09, respectively. Now those two expansion storefronts are changing hands — Eli Mordechai, who partnered with the Blocks to grow the concept, is taking sole control of 3421 Walnut and 31 S. 18th, rebranding both Artiserrie Café. We hear the concept will focus far more on the savory, introducing a café/bistro-style menu (possibly small plates), and, in 18th Street's case, a liquor license. Tom, who emphasizes that he and Mordechai still have a solid business relationship, says both cafés will stock Naked brand confections. "We remain on good terms," says Tom. "My only disappointment is that we were not able to move forward with the Naked Chocolate concept." The Blocks are looking to branch out with other Naked Chocolate locations in the future, but for now, Tom says he's working on a selection of hot and cold chocolate drinks made using single-origin, estate-grown chocolates from Central and South America.

It's not unusual to see film crews outside of Geno's Steaks. Its proprietor, Joe Vento, is always talking to Fox News or hitting up YouTube. But it seemed odd that a similarly sized crew was also at longtme rival Pat's Steaks. Turns out they were shooting one of the first few episodes of an upcoming Food Network show called Food Feud, with the channel's host/burger king/Iron Chef soul-patch-man Michael Symon. It seems to be, from what little was discussed with an anonymous cameraman, part feature program (host Symon talking with each restaurant about the history of a so-called battle) and part competition (there will be, according to reports of episodes shot in Detroit, blind taste tests of each restaurant's goods, though we didn't witness as much this morning). Are there cut-and-dried winners? We couldn't get hold of yesterday's filmed competitors, Tony Luke's and John's Roast Pork. Will this program be close to the Travel Channel's Food Wars — which recently filmed here with CP's Drew Lazor — in spirit? Can't say. Stay tuned.

Larry Rosenblum tells Meal Ticket he's in the early stages of opening Spread Bagelry, a Montreal-style wood-fire-oven bagel bakery and café, at 262 S. 20th Street just off Rittenhouse Square. Rosenblum, an entrepreneur who's spent much of his career in publishing, has partnered with Mark Cosgrove (he cooked at Steve Poses' Frog back the day) and Jane Gallina (a Le Cordon Bleu grad and former pastry chef at Brasserie Perrier) for the concept, described as "Cold Stone Creamery meets the Montreal bagel" — meaning customers can trick out their orders with a highly customizable selection of spreads and local, seasonal ingredients (think bacon and cheese sourced from Lancaster County). There'll be pre-set sandwich and brunch menus, too, plus espresso and coffee. Rosenblum, whose grandfather was a bagel baker in World War II-era Poland, says Spread will have indoor and outdoor seating; the partners are hoping to open around Labor Day weekend. Montreal bagels, which tend to have a transfixing effect on people, differ from the typical New York style in both flavor and feel — they dough is sweeter (they're typically boiled in honey water), and the wood-firing produces a crispy exterior around a denser crumb.

Although the texture of Montreal bagels is fine, they are too sweet. I have a highly sensitive taste for sweet. I will try them but if they are too sweet, feh. I buy H & H bagels at Capogiro. Praise the Lord. All other Philly bagels are garbage.

With Mark Cosgrove at the helm, it's guaranteed that he'll come up with an excellent variation of the montreal style bagel that will put the rest to shame. So stop your belly-achin' and give it a chance, it's not like you have any better options--ahem, Dunkin' Donuts and Einstein Bagels? Puh-lease.

I love the idea of a different kind of quality bagel place in the city!
I hope it does open as planned.
It is only my humble opinion but they might want to reconsider the name.
It seems to be a little too concrete and not well suited for the concept of a bagel place that is new and different.
What about "New Moon Bagelry"? or "Sensational Bagels"? or Plentifull Bagels?
Any other suggestions?

Lucky for us, this won't be the last we see of the chef. In an email to Meal Ticket, Kulper shares that he's working on a new project — one that "will definitely fill a major void in the Philadelphia market" — but doesn't have much to share other than that at this time. We'll keep you posted. - Definitely peep CNN's new multi-faceted food blog, Eatocracy. - Suzy "Beer Lass" Woods shares news that Steve Poses' Frog Burger, on the front lawn of the Franklin Institute, will start an every-Thursday happy hour tomorrow, June 24. Beer Lass herself will be there tomorrow slangin' Sly Fox cans for $2. - Ezekial Ferguson of Di Bruno's will be competing in this weekend's crazy-sounding Cheesemonger Invitational in New York. Rebecca Brumberg breaks down the event on The Queso Files. - It's a straight-up beetfest over on Doughgirl, who breaks down how to can the blood-red suckas. - Midtown Lunch Philly profiles Marcos from Fidel Gastro, who shares a great strategy for getting around the ennui caused by Five Guys' posted calorie counts.

In the past week or so, the entire Internet has turned into one giant wankfest for the iPhone 4G, with thousands upon thousands of Apple minions publicly pleasuring themselves to Steve Jobs' latest overpriced call-dropping platform Fruit Ninja console phone. (Today's the day that many pre-ordered 4Gs are arriving.) The most common way in which people tend to show off the unique, one-of-a-kind device that six million Japanese toddlers have been using since 2004 is via an "unboxing," a photo essay or video clip during which a consumer pornographically pulls out removes each component of a new gadget to make sure everyone knows how cool and smart and special they are for spending money. Meal Ticket says screw Jobs and screw the 4G. Let's unbox something that everyone can appreciate: A PIZZA!

Last night, we ordered a half pepperoni/onion and half plain pie from La Rosa, the excellent square pizza maker at Broad and Snyder. (We know their potato pizza is the truth, but decided to switch it since that's what we got last time.) We "unboxed" it, ate it, thoroughly enjoyed it and are now very proud to share our photos with you. Have fun, and remember: Even with the addition of garlic salt and crushed red pepper flakes, iPhones still taste like crap.

Drew, their pizza looks to be thin like Santucci Bros. I am not a fan of the big thick and doughy Sicilian style pizza. Can you confirm this square pie is on the thinner side? It looks legit.

This Saturday from 2 to 10, the South Philly art space Storage at 1414 S Darien Street will host the first-ever Philadelphia Picklefest, which will celebrate brined fare in both edible and artistic formats. "Pickles being a summertime food, and [considering] we haven't seen to much art related to pickles, we combined the two," says Storage co-founder Preston Link. On the art front, there'll be plenty of pickle-centric 2-D pieces (paintings, drawings), plus some sculpture work, as well. Try your hand at "pickle hole," a cuked-out variation on cornhole; Link says they'll also hang a pickle pinata, but it will be filed with candy, not half-sours and bread-and-butters (probably a good call). Everyone who's showing at Picklefest has been asked to bring a pickled dish along with their art. Link isn't exactly sure what will materalize, but he believes pickled fiddleheads, pickled eggs, pickled pig's feet, deep-fried pickle chips and even pickled martinis should be on the menu. Admission is free and guests are encouraged to both BYOB and BYOP.

Happy Hour is a place to vent daily frustrations and unwind, a time to reconnect with friends and coworkers you don't mind seeing beyond the boundaries of Cubicle Land. It's is also the ideal time to score a deal on your favorite gustatives and gulpables. For this feature, Team Meal Ticket hops to happy hours across the land and files a report every Tuesday. Let's delve into it at the North Star Bar.
WHERE YOU AT? There's not a whole lot around the North Star, on the corner 27th and Poplar in an almost exclusively residential segment of Fairmount. While it's known to most as a music venue, the North Star doubles as lively yet down-to-earth pub, dressed up with tons of antique booze-company signs (some framed, some not), Philly sports swag, show posters and assorted bric-a-brac. A couple older-looking TVs that do the trick. "Oh yeah, I've heard this song somewhere" on the music tip. Grabbed a seat with some friends at a well-worn corner table and hunkered down for pints galore.
WHAT'S THE SCENE? Neighborhood. Folks wandered in fresh out of work, waved hi to people they knew, chatted it up with the staffers they were most friendly with. Lots of smiles and chuckles and pats on the back. In a word, comfortable. A complete stranger approached our table to check out our new camera and some helpful advice on where to buy lenses for cheap; turned it out he worked as the person who rigs up high-def movie cameras on zipcords across canyons to capture footage of dudes hopping gaps on dirtbikes and stuff. Nice dude. Got wrapped in some ridiculous stories being told at our table so didn't get much of a chance to chat up anyone else, but our server was sweet and showed up at all the rights times.
WHAT'S THE DEAL? The deal is dope as shit, that's what it is. Every single day — Monday to Sunday, yeah son — it's half off all draft beers and well liquor, plus 25-cent buffalo wings, from 5:30 to 7:30. Happy happy happy! (The poster promises that HH is "eight days a week," then is sure to point that that's a "not so obscure" music reference.) North Star's draft list is pretty mainstream, meaning it won't make extreme beer geeks drool or anything, but it's solid enough — I downed two Dogfish Head 60-Minute IPAs, tore through a dozen wings and left the joint less than $10 poorer. Badass. Though the bar's a bit far-flung for us from home and work, North Star's happy hour is one we'll most definitely hop back to.
