Beck's Cajun Cafe, coming correct with N'awlins fare in Reading Terminal since 2009, is opening a second location this summer. (Recently departed food editor Drew Lazor digs their gator gumbo.) The destination is 30th Street Station, the ETA July, according to chef/owner Bill Beck. Expect Terminal favorites like po'boys and Cajun meatloaf, plus an expanded menu of the kind of salads Meal Ticket can get behind, namely the Cajun Chef's, loaded with tasso, smoked turkey and pickled veg.
A poor, defenseless hedgehog almost experienced death by carrot this past Sunday in Norfolk, UK. The wild hedgie was found with his head stuck in an empty can of carrots by a local couple, who called the RSPCA to help. The bottom of the can was cut open so the critter could breathe; he was eventually removed from the can and suffered only minor injuries. The little guy should really reconsider his standards and go raid Beatrix Potter's garden or something.
Maybe it's because they got cocky after airing the commercial, but Rita's has been coming up with some ridiculous new flavors. Smores? That's the opposite of water ice. PB&J? That's a sandwich, come on. But, you have to give Rita's credit; the flavors taste almost exactly like their namesakes. Phoodie.com blogged about their experience eating the new-but-now-defunct PB&J ice. It sounds very Wonka-esque.
Rachel Klein’s vegan commissary, Miss Rachel's Pantry (1732 W. Passyunk), opens today and accepting rezzies for its first communal farmhouse-table dinner this Fri., June 8. The inaugural animal-free feast is $45 for four courses (gluten-free option for each) and includes dishes like English pea fritters, corn-and-chanterelle chowder with grilled ramps and coconut bacon and strawberry shortcake. (Full menu after the jump.) BYOB for the house-made “spritzes;” we’re feeling a smoky mescal for the ginger-lemon-pear flavor. For reservations, email (rachel@missrachelspantry.com) or call 215-798-0053.
Sampan (124 S. 13th St.) is holding a cocktail contest! For those who want to participate, you must use Finlandia vodka, but the flavor is up to you. Michael Schulson is announcing the winning cocktail on June 28. The lucky mixologist will not only have their cocktail featured on Sampan's menu for the month of July, but they get to invite 20 friends to the unveiling at the Graffiti Bar. The winner and guests receive complimentary appetizers and samples of the cocktail. The deadline for submissions is June 15. Recipes can be submitted by emailing the restaurant at contact@sampanphilly.com, or by sending a direct message on either Facebook (Sampan Philly) or Twitter ( @sampanphilly).
