Back in May, we told you about chef Tim McGinnis' plans to kick off a catering operation and a new restaurant as part of his new gig as culinary director of Philly Kitchen Share (1514 South St.). The first half of that equation has come into focus — American Meats & Provisions is the brand McGinnis and his also-a-chef brother Jason Roberts just launched. Their selection of Euro-style sandwiches is available for lunchtime catering, but the eats will also be carried at a number of local stores, markets and cafés. The first folks to carry AM&P's stuff? Our critic Adam Erace's Green Aisle Grocery (1618 E. Passyunk Ave.), of course. Check out five-sandwich lineup after the jump. Our favorite (we were treated to a couple sample-size bites recently) is the Cajun ham and cheese, layered with ever-so-smoky homemade tasso.

The gnocchi at Pub & Kitchen (1946 Lombard St.) has always been good — chef Jonathan Adams and crew do it like the French do, whipping up pate a choux (we've been talking about choux dough lots lately, no?) and piping it into hot water to form delicate little buggers in the parisienne style. Their latest ode-to-summer rendition, though, is so sun-kissed it requires your attention. Adams starts with a blue crab jus he reduces, then folds into whipped butter kicked up with togarashi; this rich, spicy base then meets the gnocchi, plus halved cherry tomatoes, crisp, sweet snap peas and delicate chunks of peekytoe crab that are difficult to distinguish from your dumplings past dusk. Take one bite and you're outside. Take another and you're wearing flip-flops. Take a third and you're concocting an excuse to wriggle out of work the next day so you can skip down to the shore and feel the breeze curl around your ears. They do this in their slumber, summer. Eat this immediately!

The rooftop garden at Noble (2025 Sansom St.), which was but a glimmer in Grace Wicks' eye back in April, is sprouting in full force, so much so that chef Brinn Sinnott has organized a series of "roof-to-table" dinners for the rest of the summer. CP's own Neal Santos recently stopped by to take a peek at the operation for Meal Ticket. So dope that access to the garden is literally a ladder leading up from the kitchen.

A few weeks back, we posted about the caloric gauntlet thrown down by Jake's at 12th and Sansom, dubbed the "5-lb. Philly Challenge." The sandwich shack's seemingly insurmountable task dared customers to finish a two-foot sandwich, four soft pretzels, an entire box of Tastykakes, two dozen peanut chews and a Champ Cherry soda in 45 minutes or less. Yesterday, David Goldstein became the first person to destroy the challenge, polishing off the entire haul handily in 34 minutes and 48 seconds. That's him in the middle — he appears quite cogent considering the amount of food he just owned, right? — along with Jake's partners Sean Stein (left) and Gary Dorfman. Goldstein now has his face on Jake's "Wall of Fame."

Hoagie stop Cellini's (1710 E. Passyunk Ave.) closed recently, much to the chagrin of several commenters on our Sandwich Tour 2010 post. But now we're hearing that the space will become a prepared-foods store, with "mid-October" set for a target debut. A partner in the project tells us that most of the details are still up in the air and that the building needs a bit of pre-opening TLC; we will have more info for y'all soon, so stay tuned.

This is actually sad. I love all the new life on the Avenue, but I wish the old-school merchants would spruce up their stores to appeal to all the fresh blood. With just a little TLC, Cellini's really could have held their own as a specialty Italian market/deli and would be a great complement to Green Aisle.

Philadelphia’s coffee cognoscenti held its monthly Thursday Night Throwdown (TNT), a fast-paced latte art competition, on July 22 at Spruce Street Espresso (1101 Spruce St.), and Meal Ticket was there to take in the event in all of its pulled, pressed and caffeinated glory. This latest Throwdown brought together 28 competitors to try their hands at winning the monthly title and championship medal. Lovers and Madmen, Ultimo Coffee, Milkboy, Bodhi, 1 Shot, Gryphon Café, Café Clon and the host café were among the shops that tasked their top baristas with representing. TNTs started in Atlanta and have quickly spread up the East Coast, bringing together local, regional and national coffee communities. The Throwdown itself is a tournament bracket-style contest where one barista is pitted against another behind the espresso machine — they each get 3 minutes to prep their espresso and milk, and one free-hand pour to demonstrate their loftiest interpretation of latte art. The meticulous judging criteria includes:
Balance and symmetry: dividing lines are clean and even Color infusion and definition: the contrast between the whiteness of foam and the darkness of the crema. and the intention of the design is obvious and clear Use of space: the design fills the cup in an appropriate and pleasant way. The design neither crowds the cup, nor leaves it feeling empty or unfinished. there is harmony between the size of the cup and the size of the design. Overall impression: drink is free of spill marks and cup is appropriately full of liquid. General aesthetic appeal and subjective appreciation.
Courtesy of Betty Ortiz
"Mid-Atlantic Barista Mom" Betty Ortiz of Spruce Street was a perfect host for the floating contest, which was sponsored by roasters Counter Culture and presided over by judge Aaron Ultimo of Ultimo Coffee (top pic, light blue shirt); he ultimately decided whose cups moved on from round to round. This time, Jonathon Amos of Bodhi Coffee (410 S. Second St.) won top honors. It's serious stuff — the winner walks away with cash and coffee swag in addition to bragging rights. Above all else, though, it serves as an opportunity to hang with some of the most passionate, friendly food/drink people in the city. August’s Thursday Night Throwdown will be held at Ultimo Coffee at 15th and Mifflin; keep an eye on TNT's site for more info. Check out video of the latest TNT below, via ComplexEspresso:

Jean-Luc Fanny's Café L'aube, which the Ivory Coast native opened at 1512 South close to two years ago, is growing north, with a second location at 1631 Wallace Street. Its tentative opening is slated for "summer 2010." (Hey, that's right now!) More details soon; in the meantime, read Trey Popp's March 2009 rave about Fanny's specialty. Crepe lovers of Fairmount, rejoice! (h/t @FairmountNews) UPDATE [3:48 p.m.]: Just touched base with Fanny to grab a couple more details. This new space will be two rooms, and bigger than original. Same exact approach as the original café, with the exception of the waffles — here they'll be served Liege-style, which is denser/chewier than the Brussels style he presses on South. Fanny is aiming for an August 15 opening.

Just a second to the earlier review -- this is a complete gem of a cafe. The crepes and waffles are made to perfection, and, coupled with the coffee roasted in house, quickly becomes addictive. I couldn't be happier to see it opening in a neighborhood like East Fairmount!
