Sandwich Smash
Friend of Meal Ticket Doron Taussig, CP's former news editor who now blogs for philly.com's It's Our Money, is kicking off what he calls Sandwich Tour 2010 tonight. What is Sandwich Tour, you ask? Let's have Doron explain:
The Sandwich Tour began last year, when my wife Chelsea went away for a few days in June. After my first couple of meals I noticed that, when left alone, I was inclined to pretty much survive on sandwiches. So I decided to make it official, eating sandwiches for the duration of her absence, and making a point of visiting sandwich landmarks Koch's and Sarcone's. Yesterday, Chelsea flew to California to visit her brother. And though I will miss her and her delicious vegetable-centric cooking, I am happy to say it is now Sandwich Time. Over the next few days, I'm going to eat sandwiches for lunch and dinner every day. Some will be landmark sandwiches; others, below-the-radar. The main criteria are that they be a) sandwiches (two pieces of bread with food in between) and b) delicious. I have enlisted CP's food editor and renowned fantasy basketball player Drew Lazor as a Sandwich Guide; we have a preliminary list of destinations, but please do send us your suggestions.
Our prelim list is after the jump (Ba Le Bakery is already a go for this evening), but leave any and all suggestions in the comments! Let's make Sandwich Tour 2010 one to remember, and not just because we will all be extremely fat(ter) after all this.
  • Paesano's
  • John's Roast Pork
  • Delicatessen
  • Jake's Sandwich Board
  • Ba Le Bakery
  • Ishkabibbles
  • Shank's Original

Famous Fourth St Pastrami or Reuben - split one or you won't be hungry for the next meal

Percy Street's PST

Supper Dog at Supper (do we have a ruling if hot dogs are sandwiches or not?)

Le Bus - any of them great heated in the press, but especially the one with eggplant & hummus

I personally love Campo's Hot Italian Sausage sandwich. Fantastic goodness and must be on a seeded roll. If you think South Jersey is worthy of venturing for a good sandwich, West Side Gravy in Collingswood has a Turkey Club that is beyond delicious.

Fried Green Tomato Hoagie from Chickie's is awesome.
Also the tortas from Los Gallos are huge and delicious, had 2 in the last week and a half.

Unfortunately, Cellini's Deli is closed down for the time being. Rumors that they are re-opening at some point, though.

I second Chickie's Italian Deli.

The Chicken Sandwich at Royal Tavern...I need to get it every time I go there.

Love this idea, I consider the ever vague "sandwish" my favorite food!

-DiNic's rast pork (in reading terminal market) with cheese, horseradish, & roasted peppers is one of my city wide favorites!

-Cosmi's (8th & Dickinson) has an awesome chicken cutlet caprese, or an equally awesome veggie caprese, I always get balsamic added. Outstanding.

-Primo's diablo sandwiches are fool proof, I love the tuna diablo, Italian diablo, or the audioablo, sooo good.

-Though it recently closed, Cellini's at Passyunk & Morris will always be one of my favorite & most memorable sandwiches in the city. You could walk in and order the daily special, and whatever it was it was always bangin'. RIP awesome sandwiches :(

-The Royal Tavern's (7th & Passyunk) meatloaf sandwich is so good I sometimes dream about it. Yeah, its that serious.

I fixed it Rach. Haha. And couldn't agree more with Primo's Diablo series! Turkey, Italian and tuna are all fire (no pun intended, ok maybe kinda)

Do non-traditional sandwiches count? If so, the spicy falafel from Mama's is the best

Also, I recommend the cheesesteak, or anything else, from Gooey Looie's on Moyamensing.

Cosmi's has an amazing Italian Tuna hoagie as well. No mayo, just the primo canned Italian tuna. I get mine with pickles on half of a seeded roll.

1) George's Sandwiches at 900 1/2 South 9th. Their meatball sandwich is at least among the best in Philadelphia. For the eating one percenters, George's is famous for their tripe sandwich.

2) A bit of a trek, but Cajun Kate's po' boys, especially brisket, are incredible.

3) A lot of the places already mentioned. Nick's Roast Beef. DiNic's brisket, Chickie's Tuna Special or vegetarian.

1. No burgers! They are sandwiches too. Village Whiskey burger if you can only eat one but the South Philly Taproom one rocks as well

2. Veggie option: riblet sandwich at A Full Plate Cafe

3. Pork! Cubano sandwich at Johnny Brenda's or Cubana torta from Taco Loco truck

Doron the explorer, you must try West Philly's Fu-Wah Vietnamese hoagies. They have them in tofu and pork and a bunch of different varieties. They have them all over South Philly too.

See you on the basketball court after you carb the eff out. Say hi to your brother in law for me.

2nd Nick's charcoal pit.

Also the pork sandwich at Porky Point is freaking amazing.

For some decent standard deli sandwiches (on bread not hoagies) check out Delicious Bites on 15th & South.. nothing crazy but definitely way above par for a corner store. Used to eat there at least twice a week.

See, I consider burgers in their own category entirely; partly because there are so many variations, including the buh-gillions of ways to make beef burgers awesome, turkey burgers, veggie burgers, salmon burgers, etc. BUT that could just be me.

Could it be? An episode of Top Chef that actually features two interesting and generally-relevant-to-cooking challenges?!
Just out of frame is a greased-up Anthony Bourdain in nothing but a towel and Havaianas
Quickfire: Transcendently beautiful Padma and plucky guest judge Michelle Bernstein — with whom Andrea has chef beef (Miami style!) — tell the remaining 10 cheftestants that they must cook a dish using an "exotic" protein — stuff like llama, emu eggs, ostrich, duck tongues ... and foie gras. (Copout!) The chefs draw knives to determine who picks what when. This is really the type of challenge that should appear on Top Chef more often, as it's the rare reality/competition show that's actually well-suited to showcase one's skill at manipulating animal testes in a creative capacity. Usually you just get real estate agents and personal trainers chewing them like Bazooka Joe and weeping while Joe Rogan screams and a bunch of veins bulge out of his weird neck. Wait ... is that Cayman Crocodile? I love Cayman Crocodile! I'm glad to see him getting work! Lemme get a closeup?
Ah yeah, that's definitely CC! You can tell by the name tag he's biting, see it? Not sure how many of you young kids remember this, but prior to his work on Top Chef, CC actually had a bit of an acting career going. It all started in the early '80s with his role as the lovable, precocious Ricky on the sitcom Silver Spoons:
A few years later, CC made an unlikely but seamless transition into film. Who could forget his moving turn as the title character in 1985's Academy Award-nominated Kiss of the Spider Woman?:
CC laid low for the first half of the '90s, but then made a roaring comeback in 1997, tackling the edgy role of Ben Hood in Ang Lee's gut-wrenching The Ice Storm. Cayman Crocodile's performance was a study in measured rage, a glowering internalization of the dregs of suburban misery:
After that, though, CC fell off the map, mostly dabbling in infomercial work and reptile porn and the like. Now he's back and he doesn't look a day older! Here's to you, Cayman Crocodile!
Look out for Cayman Crocodile in the upcoming straight-to-DVD feature Lake Placid 4: Sorry, Betty White Isn't in This One, Either
Angelo, oh Angelo, draws duck balls, which he has no experience with; he immediately announces his intentions to create a "testicle marshmallow." "I've used duck balls before," deadpans Ed, detailing a cock's comb-and-testes "cock and balls soup" he put together when working for Todd "I Look Like Gaston" English. Ed, hands-on experience with balls is one area where I think it's OK to concede alpha-male dominance to another dude. About 10 minutes into cooking, Padma throws a transcendently beautiful wrench into the system: Every chef is forced to take on the weird meat directly to their left, meaning our dude Jersey Kev gets stuck with the balls. So many dudes are touching these nuts! At the bottom: Stephen, who offers frog's legs that Bernstein calls "insipid"; No. 1 knife-drawer Alex, who cooks dried-out ostrich (serves you right for picking foie first!); and Andrea, who is sooooo salty that Bernstein gets to take a national-TV crap on her for a wild boar dish. Dishes at the top: Kelly's creamy emu egg omelette, Tamesha's duck tongue soup (mmm!) and Amanda's roasted llama with sauce soubise. Kelly ends up with the W and immunity, which is key for her since the Elimination is a wacky one this time around. The challenge: The U.S.S. Sequoia, the presidential yacht yacht, must not get nearly as much action as Air Force One (I guess there aren't many crucial diplomatic trips taken to places like St. Croix or Niagara Falls), since they allow the chefs and judges and crew to hop on board and cook up a bunch of served-cold entrées in a "Cold War" challenge. (War's hilarious ... I hope they have a "Korean War" ep with mad banchabn and kalbi ... ) The chefs split into two teams of five; they're each allowed to taste the other team's food, and subsequently nominate a winner and loser within their competing group.
This picture needs an awesome caption. Help me out in the comments.
Angelo identifies sockeye salmon as "sexy" and "vibrant" at Whole Foods (wow, which Whole Foods are you shopping at?!); he's later called out for chatting up his competitors and offering dish advice, at which point he addresses his reputation for gamesmanship. "There are conspiracies that I'm here to play tactical games," he says. "I'm here to play and win." One begets the other, A! Just do it already. Kinda like how Ed did your college girlfriend, a fact he is extremely proud to broadcast to the viewing populace. After much hemming and hawing from the competing chefs at the dinner table (Tom C. calls the chefs out for BSing their way through some harsh, negative commentary, e.g. people hate on Jersey Kev's tuna/veal dish for lack of acidity even though it's got both lemon and tomato on the plate), the gang lasts on their top two — haters-can't-hold-me Jersey Kev and Tiff, who impresses with spicy tuna in a gazpacho-style sauce. Jersey Kev gets the chip, plus a trip to Hawaii. Yeah dude! At the bottom: Tamesha, whose scallop/rhubarb/herb dish is oddly cooked and flavored; and the usually-strong Kenny Blalicchio, who does one of his now-signature "[insert number] ways" presentations with lamb and is rebuked for getting too fancy and conceptual. Of course, Blalicchio's too strong of a threat to go home, so Tameesh, Angelo's padawan ladylove, is sent packing. We promised y'all way back in Episode 1 that we'd be Photoshopping the Barbados native's head onto Rihanna's body at least once this season — now seems like an appropriate time, does it not?
Kicking it with Robin Thicke, ain't no thing
In concert, pre Chris Breezy incident

I know Tiffany's not going to take it all, but don't you wish she would? Her post-win celebration would be epic in scope. I'm also digging previews from the next ep involving my girl Tiff and Greatest Generation Ed getting a little too cozy. I love it when Top Chef takes a turn for the CW.

I've eaten bulls's testicles and they were downright delicious. A cowboy chef from Denver made them.

My sister sandy the picky eater said she could not watch the quickfire because it made her sick. Figures. She has no sense of adventure when eating home or eating out. Won't even taste lamb, duck, quail, sweetbreads - you get the idea.

Frankly unusual ingredients make for fun episodes but think how difficult it is to perfectly roast a chicken. Or a capon, who, poor baby, lost his balls.

Tonight, from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m., Mixto (1141 Pine St.) is throwing a little shindig to celebrate its new Thursday-to-Saturday late-night hours. Some sweet dealage going down from 10 to 11, too. Eric Henney has all the details for you in the latest edition of What's Cooking:
Mixto recently extended its evening hours to 2 a.m. Thursday to Saturday, which is as good a reason as any to throw a party. From 10 to 11, come in to try something off the new late-night menu, which includes items like shrimp ceviche and empanadas, and wash it all down with free Cruzan mojitos and Sauza margaritas. From 11 to 2, they'll be spinning Latin jams and offering more than 20 varieties of margaritas and mojitos (mango, guava, sweet tea, etc.) for just $3 each. Here's a peek inside Crocodile Philly (110 Chestnut St.), the Old City bar that kicked off business this past Friday. It's a bilevel joint; the top floor, a loungier situation, goes by the name Wet Bar at Crocodile, while the ground floor has a pretty traditional tavern feel, with lots of TVs, a long bar, high-top seating and a couple cushy booths. They're open daily from 5 to close.

Philly has long held "Little Brussels" status as the premier city in America to get your Belgian beer thing on, so it's not surprising that a number of our prized beer bars are throwing down to celebrate Belgian Independence Day tonight, July 21. A few highlights after jump. Know of any other goings-on? Leave a comment or email drew.lazor@citypaper.net. Devil's Den (1148 S. 11th St.) is knocking a dollar of Belgian and Belgian-style drafts tonight from 5 to 7: That include La Chouffe Houblon (so good!), Maredsous 8, Ommegang Witte, Omeegang Rare Vos and Duvel Green. The venerable Monk's (264 S. 16th St.) is tapping all sorts of goodies — between the front bar and back, they'll be pouring La Chouffe, Duvel Green, Maredsous 8 and four Belgian-styles from Ommegang: Pale Ale, Adoration, Tripel Perfection (love that stuff!) and Zuur, which is a blend of Liefmans Goudenband and the Cooperstown brewery's own sour brown ale. (All Ommegangs will be $5.50.) There'll also be various brewery reps in the house handing out free tees, hats, etc. Eulogy (136 Chestnut St.) will be running specials on all Duvel and Ommegang beers, and will also have T-shirts to give out. You can also peep a Belgian beer at Eulogy's sister bar Beneluxx (33 S. Third St.), which offers a brew (or wine), plus a cheese/chocolate sample, for five bucks from 5 to7. Speaking of sisters: Monk's hermana Belgian Cafe (2047 Green St.) will have plenty of brews from La Chouffe, Ommegang, Duvel and St. Bernardus on tap. Free Duvel glasses with the purchase of a draft. Reps will be on hand here, too, handing out shwag, and the kitchen also plans on putting out some Belg-inspired specials, including Provencal mussels, pan-seared filet with Ommegang Abbey/mushroom sauce and a Brussels-style street waffle with chocolate sauce, cream and berries. City Tap House (The Radian, 3925 Walnut St.) is doing $3 Ommegang Hennepin and $6 Duvel Green on draft. At  6p.m., they'll take Ommegang's Belgian Pale Ale as well as the aforementioned Zuur. Flights for 12 bucks. They'll also be running a raffle to win two tickets to Ommegang's "Belgium Comes to Cooperstown" event; the drawing will be at 9 p.m. Jose Pistola's (263 S. 15th St.) is holding its Belgian Independence celebration this Friday, July 23, instead of tonight. On that day they'll offer drafts from Ommegang, Mardedsous, Duvel and La Chouffe from lunchtime on; Belgian-themed food specials are also in the works.

Peep our dude Tom McCusker of Honest Tom's Taco Truck on the latest episode of Daniel Delaney's VendrTV. (Another Philly boy, Hawk Krall, recently worked with VendrTV, as well, designing their signature wallets.) The truck's trippy vinyl wrap (courtesy of Shira Walinsky) looks good on video. Remember when it looked like this? UPDATE: Moved the video after a jump due at the request of several readers who were not fond of the auto-start feature. Cheers!

Mark Tropea and Krystal Weaver launched their BYOB Sonata in Liberties Walk (1010 N. American St. 215-238-1240) a year ago today, To celebrate, the chefs will hook up any guest who comes in for dinner Friday through Sunday with a free Champagne toast, and they'll dole out complimentary Bloody Marys for Sunday brunch from 10 to 2. Use the booze to chase items off Sonata's new summer menu, which features humidity-cutting dishes like gazpacho with cucumber sorbet and a compressed watermelon salad with local goat cheese.
