Lucky Old Souls (1713 McKean St.), the Newbold bar/restaurant/music venue Matthew Feldman first announced in the summer of 2009 (it's named after his G-Town Radio show), has proven to be a circuitous process. But Feldman's project is showing glimmers of progress — on Wednesday, August 4 at 12:30 p.m., the PLCB has scheduled a hearing regarding LOS' liquor license application. Feldman's been waiting for this hearing for close to a year and encourages citizens — especially those who live in and around the Newbold neighborhood — to attend and show their support. The hearing will take place at Eighth and Market; if you're interested in attending, RSVP with your full name to luckyoldsouls@yahoo.com.

Every Wednesday, Meal Ticket pokes around the food blog world to see what's simmering. - Possibly the only "porn" safe for work, FoodPornDaily's gorgeous photos are sure to get your belly growling. I definitely want some alone time with this poached egg on toast. - Beer Lass sends out some lobster love, informing us of where to get it, what to order and how much it'll run you. My mouth is already watering. - If you are more of a visual learner, peep this video recipe for some tasty-looking corn chowder, provided by 22nd & Philly. The ladies added extra bacon to their version, which I am 1,000 percent OK with. - Di Bruno Brothers' blog The Queso Files shares their cheesy choices to pair with beers from King of Prussia's Rock Bottom Brewery. - Not sure what to do with that gorgeous rhubarb you grabbed at the farmers market (ahem, me)? Here is a simple, lovely recipe shared by Straight from the Farm for roasted rhubarb and cream. Drawing for Food continues their artist series with an interview featuring Martha Rich. Her food-related artwork can be seen here, and I love it. You probably will, too.

Two solid events of note going down this week at Pub & Kitchen (1946 Lombard St.) — tonight, drop by for chef Jonathan Adams' barbecue night, featuring a half-rack of ribs done up with P&K's house BBQ sauce, sides of coleslaw and Anson Mills grits and a pint of Troegs Sunshine Pils (it is summer, after all) for 17 bucks. Tomorrow, July 15, from 5:30 to 7:30, you can drop by for a local brews/bites happy hour benefitting The Food Trust. They'll be pouring Yards beers, and there'll be appetizer plates featuring locally sourced products — think tomato salad, scotch eggs and squash blossoms (people love squash blossoms!). Admission is free; a portion of sales during happy hour will go toward The Food Trust's farmers market programming.

Adam Erace of Green Aisle Grocery (1618 E. Passyunk Ave.) tells Meal Ticket he's struck up a partnership with Bobby Logue, owner of Bodhi Coffee (410 S. Second St.), to implement a sort of pop-up Green Aisle inside the Headhouse coffee shop. Logue is in the process of building and installing a display unit that'll sit in the rear of Bodhi; the shelves will be stocked with an array of gourmet items supplied by Green Aisle, such as Pub & Kitchen barbecue sauce, Baker E jams, Mast Brothers chocolates, Brooklyn Brine pickles, Fond meringues and more. "We feel that Bodhi and Green Aisle have similar philosophies, and we're compatible," says Erace of the partnership. The project should be up and running withina a month.

Today marks 221 years since the French gained their independence, and I for one think some celebration is in order. AFter the jump, check out Meal Ticket's picks for what to do, where to eat and when might be an appropriate time to bust out berets and/or baguettes. Très bien! - Bistrot La Minette (623 S. Sixth St.) is hosting a French Barbecue in honor of the holiday. They've prepared a special four-course menu for tonight, with accompanying drink specials. (In addition, every Wednesday during the summer at both the bar and at the sidewalk café, they offer "Bistrot Bites," a $10 snack and drink deal.) - From today through Saturday, July 17, Bistro St. Tropez (2400 Market St.) will serve  a $28 prix-fixe menu featuring French staples like vichyssoise, steak frites and profiteroles, just to name a few. - For all of the franco-cine-philes out there: International House (3701 Chestnut St.) is continuing its Janus Collection series with a showing of Bresson's Pickpocket in honor of Bastille Day on Saturday, July 17 at 7 p.m. - No French celebration is complete without some wine and cheese. Pinot Boutique (337 Market St.) in Old City will play host to a wine and cheese sampling and live music this evening. - At 7:30 p.m. tonight, Rim Café (1172 S. Ninth St.) will toast to La Fête Nationale with a killer barbecue by "The Godfather" (aka owner René Kobeitri), dancing, drinks (BYOB) and various treats also made by René. I absolutely trust a man with that name to make my French pastries, that is for sure. - Le Bec-Fin (1523 Walnut St.) is also joining in on the festivities, with an outdoor event from noon until nightfall featuring $2 pastries, special bar bites, sandwiches and drink deals, including sparkling red and white wine and specialty cocktails for $6. - Stephen Starr's Parc (227 S. 18th St.), which actually opened on Bastille Day two years ago, is celebrating with specialty drinks, a three-course, $45 prix-fixe, and promised gypsy jazz.

Konstantinos Pitsillides of Kanella (1001 Spruce St.) — one of our favorite chefs with whom to chat — is next up to bat in Stephen Starr's pop-up restaurant series at Washington Square, the first installment of which featured Aimee Olexy of Talula's Table (check out Anthony Sica's recap). Pitsillides says he plans on cooking a Levantine-influenced menu for the three-day event, which'll run from Tuesday, July 27 to Thursday, July 29. The Levant is the name for the region directly east of the Mediterranean Sea, encompassing nations like Lebanon, Israel, Syria and Iraq; Pitsillides' native island of Cyprus is often lumped into this region, too, so the chef's quite familiar with these many-varied cuisines. He says he'll cook dishes like sautéed nettles with mushrooms and kefalograviera cheese; lamb pie with dates (an Iraqi staple); vine leaf-wrapped sardines (Lebanese); and fattoush, a fried-bread salad (Syrian). There'll be roughly nine or 10 appetizers (topping out at $11), and four mains that'll run you $19 to $24. Three desserts (if you've had Kanella's sweets before, you know you're gonna need to get dessert). The menu's not finalized just yet but we'll post it in full here when it is. SRO will begin taking reservations for the three-night run tomorrow, July 14, at 10 a.m. Call 215-592-7787. UPDATE [15july10]: Full menu after the jump.

Happy Hour is a place to vent daily frustrations and unwind, a time to reconnect with friends and coworkers you don’t mind seeing beyond the boundaries of Cubicle Land. It’s is also the ideal time to score a deal on your favorite gustatives and gulpables. For this feature, Team Meal Ticket hops to happy hours across the land and files a report every Tuesday. Let’s delve into it at Sampan's Graffiti Bar.
Photos | Anthony Sica
WHERE YOU AT? This week’s Happy Hour Hopper brought us to Michael Schulson's rainbow-splashed slice of 13th Street, the Graffiti Bar (124 S. 13th St.). Open in Sampan's alley/courtyard space since spring, Graffiti Bar offers a more casual atmosphere than the slick color-changing-panel dining room inside. Out here there's a full bar and a long communal table that can also be reserved for dinner; a flat-screen makes this a chill spot for a Phils game. Sampan recently added an all-weather cover to the area, equipped with ceiling fans and heaters.
Photos | Anthony Sica
WHAT'S THE SCENE? It was empty for the majority of our stay, but a couple more people were making their way outside as we wrapped up. The inside bar was populated with suit-and-tie types getting out of work, whereas the Graffiti Bar, I think, appeals more to a younger crowd. Bartender Meghan's iPod provided the soundtrack on this evening; she was also well-versed in the food and drink options and made spot-on recommendations for beverages and small plates. And that all-weather cover proved its worth fast when the sky opened above us, keeping us dry throughout the storm.

WHAT'S THE DEAL? Sampan isn’t exactly cheap, so this happy hour — running Monday to Friday, from 4 to 7 — offers a chance for anyone to sample small bites off the menu for two dollars a pop. Satays are the main draw, but Kobe hot dogs, Kobe sliders, spring rolls and dumplings round out the HH menu. Winners among our group were the scallop and corn satays as well as the bulgogi, some of the best I’ve ever had. There are specials on cocktails, too, topping out at $9 for a Classic French Martini, but considering the freshness of the components in the $6 Vietnamese Fizz or the $8 Mango Cardamom Sour, you should buy into something a bit more exotic. Pints of Asahi Dry are available for $9, while a pitcher will put you back $27. Other drafts include Stoudts American Pale Ale ($6/$18), Flying Fish Summer Ale ($7/$21), and Brooklyn Brown Ale ($8/$24). And although not on the HH menu, check out the daily soft serve ice cream flavor. They run a chocolate and a vanilla variation every day; during our visit they offered Nutella and Blueberry Pop Tart. The trio of tiny cones is a perfect way to end a hop.
