Michael Caro, who along with his wife Edna has moved Walnut Bridge Coffee from 2319 Walnut to the corner of 20th and Ludlow, says he hopes to have his new space open sometime in the next week. Nook Bakery and Coffee Bar, as it'll now be known, sits at at 1,600 square feet, close to twice the size of Walnut Bridge, which they ran for five years; it'll allow for more elbow room for customers in addition to an expanded in-house baking operation. Walnut Bridge used Illy brand coffee, but Caro says he'll now source beans from the Souderton-based One Village as well as New York's Gimme. They'll feature a "brew bar" where customers can choose from an international variety of unique single-origin beans that will be ground and brewed to order; for those in a hurry, though, Nook will also feature fresh French press fuel on hand. An elaborate four-stage water filtration system will allow Caro to tweak out municipal H2O for optimal brewing results. Edna has built up a reputation for her great bread puddings (vanilla, banana chocolate, strawberry, etc.) — those'll be available, as well as sweets like brownies and lemon bars. For lunch, they'll avoid going the sandwich route (Center City competition is too saturated, Caro believes) and focus on savory baked dishes like quiches, scones (bacon/chive/white cheddar is one option) and casseroles.

Chhaya Café is the name of the biz taking over what was Le Petite Croissant at 1823 E. Passyunk Avenue. During the week, they'll operate as a coffee house, serving sandwiches, salads, fresh-baked bready fare and some unique waffle preparations — spicy cornbread, a pulled pork-topped option and black-and-white marble cake waffles are just three examples. On weekends, owner Brett Shangold says they'll serve Saturday and Sunday brunch, working off a menu that'll feature their waffles in addition to other brunch dishes. Friday and Saturday nights, they'll do cichetti for dinner — that's the Venetian small-plate service we first caught wind of this past winter thanks to Andrea Luca Rossi of Rittenhouse's Cichetteria 19. No solid opening date just yet but we'll update here as we learn more. UPDATE [13july10]: Chhaya hopes to open its doors in the first week of August, according to Shangold.

Hey ... it's only quasi-disgusting right now! This calls for an outdoor activity. In this week's What's Cooking, Eric Henney breaks down tonight's Dollar Stroll down Baltimore Avenue:
The University City District unveiled a tasty way to render lame dollar stores obsolete last month with its Dollar Stroll. It was a huge hit, and tonight it's coming back for round two. Fifteen participating merchants along Baltimore Avenue are offering $1 specials; check out injera snacks at Dahlak, coffee at Gold Standard, bite-size vegan sandwiches at Green Line and slices of pizza at Dock Street. Baltimore Avenue between 43th and 50th streets, universitycity.org.
The promo, which kicks off right about now and runs till 8:30 p.m., features one-dollar deals from 15 different businesses — and many of them are edible. Here's the full list of participants.

Mark Mebus, a vegan chef who's worked for Horizons in Philly as well as Blossom in NYC, will open Blackbird, an all-vegan pizza shop operation, in the former Gianna's Grille at 507 S. Sixth Street. Mebus, who's been vegan himself for a dozen years, says the concept will be "more involved than a hoagie shop," but still very "pedestrian friendly," meaning it'll be no thing to pop in off the sidewalk for a Daiya cheese-laden slice of pie. He's putting together a menu of specialty vegan pizzas, plus salads and sandwiches (a tofu situation, plus a seitan/mushroom cheesesteak variation, are currently in the works). He'll place a big emphasis on high-quality ingredients, going organic whenever possible. Mebus hopes to have Blackbird open in the next two to three months.

Every Wednesday Thursday (this week!), Meal Ticket pokes around the food blog world to see what's simmering. - If you like the fast-paced tension of live auctions and have a love of fancy food, do yourself a favor and follow East Passyunk Avenue's Green Aisle Grocery on Twitter. They fire out pics of all their latest wares, like these local apricots. - Working at Sixpoint Brewery in Brooklyn must be sweet. Their daily homemade lunches using local (rooftop!) ingredients is a wonderful idea, and the photos are making my mouth water. - Viva la Fête Nationale! According to Grub Street, Paloma is hosting The Vidoccq Society (our favorite crime-fighting, French- loving forensic specialists) on Bastille Day. Soon after it will open to the public, serving Mexican-French Cuisine at Eighth and Catharine. - Memphis Taproom's Mystery Beer Weekend is no longer. Apparently it was as illegal as it was fun. RIP ... you will be missed. - Emily Callaghan of Table Matters does an extensive interview with man/myth/legend Craig LaBan. - Urban Vegan shares her vegan take on the classic caprese sandwich. Yum. Machismo, rolling 'ritos at 4330 Main Street in Manayunk since 2007, has opened its second area location, at 8500 Henry Avenue in the Andorra Shopping Center (267-385-6602). It's about twice the size of the Manayunk shop; they do business 11 to 9 seven days a week, and they deliver. Owner Will Caton, who's been actively hunting for additional real estate in both Center City and West Chester (he has three Machismo locations in Virginia, plus another in southern Florida), is now offering Machismo as a franchise option. He's also looking to move his concept further into Philly sooner rather than later — Caton tells Meal Ticket he's planning on signing a lease for a space in The Shops at Liberty Place. Ink's not on paper yet, but the plan is to open up this shop by October.

Friend of Meal Ticket MS recently brought us an awesome (and extremely large) Italian hoagie (or should we say sub?) from the venerable Dino's Subs & Pizza in Margate City. This thing was a beast — the length of two Primo's — and the hefty, ultra-crusty bread (locals sometimes call it an "Atlantic City roll") did a wondrous job housing the abundance of meat, cheese, lettuce, tomato and raw onion; a dusting of oregano and a side of hot pepper hash brought it all home. It was delicious, and it got us thinking: We admittedly don't have much experience with Jersey Shore eats, so what other down-the-shore sandwiches are must-tries? We've always noticed people talking about White House and Sacco's Sack O' Subs in hushed tones ... which other shops deserve a sandwich lover's nod?
