Over at Huffington Post Marc Vetri is making his blogosphere debut, sharing his thoughts on the sordid state of school lunch. Coming from a guy whose dad rolls out meatballs in the kitchen of Vetri, food and family are key and shared family meals are invaluable.
To counter this sad state of affairs Vetri organized Dream Camp, a summer program in which kids from low income families can experience healthy, family-style eating, learning the finer points of setting the table, passing food, and clearing up after the meal.
So what happened over the course of those five weeks? Here's what Vetri has to say:
"These children have made a real connection between healthy eating and healthy living. They make better decisions about their own health, they influence their families and they are a voice for better choices in their communities. This all was accomplished over the course of five scant weeks. Imagine the possibilities of this if we did it longer and on a larger scale."
Good stuff.
Pho, sushi and bibimbab all in the same place? The More Food Court in H-Mart (7320 Old York Rd.) in Philly's Koreatown is your one-stop-shop. Not all food court stalls are made equal however, but there are good (and cheap) eats to be had. Meal ticket checked out two of the H-Mart food court options.
Gene Guiffi's long anticipated Blue Belly BBQ (600 Catherine St.) is swinging open its doors tomorrow and the barbecue without borders menu is looking, well, let's just say that we know where lunch is going to happen tomorrow. Guiffi's no-rules barbecue philosophy frees up lots of room for the Cochon chef to explore all sorts of regional open fire cooking.
The sandwich lineup is looking stellar, think pulled pork with pickled fennel, pork rind and mustard dip and Korean beef with kimchi, crispy shallot and pear ginger vinaigrette. And if you happen to have a vegetarian in tow, there's a falafel on board as well.
Pork shoulder, short ribs, chicken, pork belly, and house-made sausages come with a generous choice of three sides including an out of control mac and cheese, fingerling potato salad, and bacon onion corn cakes.
Are you a street food aficionado? The Vendy Awards are coming up on Saturday July 28th, and they need your help! Volunteers are promised free food from the city's foremost food trucks, who will be competing for the title “Best Food Truck in Philadelphia.” If you have time (let's face it, you were gonna buy that $55 ticket anyways), message Diana Minkus via twitter.

Just as we predicted yesterday, Anthony Bourdain is in town filming an episode of The Layover and more importantly, making amends for all those shameful years of avoiding our fair city.
Of course, the twitter-verse has been exploding with all sorts of Bourdain related intel. He was at DiBruno's exchanging cheese chatter with Emilio Magnucci! Sandwich sampling at Peter McAndrews' Paesanos! Taking twitpics of skateboards emblazoned with the face of Marco Pierre White! Up by temple taking in Dark Night.
We're not naming any names, but we're pretty sure that Tony is going to making a few more stops in South Philly before the end of his departs from his Philadelphia layover.
Ever wonder what makes the fried chicken at Federal Donuts (1219 S. 2nd St.) so sought after? Ever wonder if you could duplicate those perennially sold out birds at home?
Micheal Solomonov procured the help of modern day merchant Lior Lev Sercarz of La Boîte in New York City, where the Israeli spice master sources and blends herbs and spices for chefs in need. The winning combination is a secret mixture of onion, mustard and garlic, in other words “OMG.” If you're keen on testing out your Federal fried chicken chops, get your own stash of OMG for $15.
On my last trip to the American Sardine Bar (1801 Federal St.), I was dismayed to see that the seitan and mushroom cheesesteak was absent from the chalkboard menu. These woes quickly gave way to delight upon learning that said meatless monster had been replaced with a new veg option: the potato and mushroom pambazo. Our server explained that what makes a pambazo a pambazo is that the bread (thick, crust-less slices of white) is soaked in a guajillo pepper sauce and crisped up on the flat top before it’s stuffed full of all manner of deliciousness.
ASB’s is filled with refried beans, shredded lettuce, tomatoes, portobello mushrooms, and potatoes and onions spiced up with jalapenos. Then, this bad boy is smothered in an avalanche of Mexican condiments: chipotle tofu mayo, roasted salsa verde, and guacamole sauce. It’s righteously priced at $9 - add cheese for a buck (or an egg for the same price during weekend brunch). Every bite is unpretentious and messy, exploding with flavor. In addition to this new fav, there are some other intriguing updates to the Sardine Bar’s menu (smoked Pocono trout with creamy cucumbers sandwich) and old stand bys like fried PB&J and salt and pepper fries with dill pickle dip. Resident sandwich-ologist, chef Scott Schroeder is keeping things exciting over as ASB with an ever evolving menu of sandwiches, soups, and sides.
Fans of Little Baby's Ice Cream, get psyched, their brick-and-mortar location at 2311 Frankford Ave. is slated to open Friday, August 3rd. In the same forward thinking food complex as pizza-seum, Pizza Brain, the dudes behind Little Baby's are throwing a grand opening gala with all iterations of ice cream, music, art, and merriment. Scoops of Banana-Balsamic and Speculoos are sure to be plentiful. Mark your calenders, the party starts at 5 p.m.
Marcie Turney and Val Safran's sexy young Spaniard, Jamonera (105 S. 13th St.)--it got good looks from David Snyder last month--is serving a ten-course tapas dinner this Sun., July 29. Turney's got heirloom tomato gazpacho with shishito peppers and charred corn; warm Medjool dates stuffed with Valdeon and wrapped in bacon; pork-and-beef albondigas in hammy tomato sauce and more on deck for the family-style spread. It's only $35 a head, leaving plenty of cash-money to spend on Jamonera's carefully vetted sherry selection. Check out the full menu after the jump. Reservations (jamonerarestaurant.com, 215-922-6061) a must.
En route to the always a good time Tales of the Cocktail gathering in New Orleans, a trio of road tripping NYC bartenders are slinging drinks tonight at Franklin Mortgage & Investment Co. (112 South 18th St.) Jane Danger of rum-centric Cienfuegos will be on hand along with home-of-the-gin-and-tonic-on-tap Gin Palace's Frank Cisneros as well as Brooklyn's Billy Dollard of the Bourgeois Pig.
Grub Street has the full line up of cocktails, all creations from the bartenders' repertoires, being served from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. this evening. If you're wondering why it's such an early call, it's because those guys are double booked with an 11 p.m. call in Richmond, VA.
With three more stops to go before an epic five days of cocktail conviviality, we've got to give this group some serious props for getting the party started nice and early.
