The dudes behind the line at Marc Vetri's Alla Spina know how to treat sandwiches. They've got a veal cutlet hoagie with bacon mayo that is nothing short of genius, a mind bending cheesesteak on a pretzel roll, and a mortadella dog that's late night happy hour perfect.
The latest addition to the Alla Spina sandwich hall of fame is doesn't really fall under the Italian gastropub header, but man, is it a killer burger.
Today for Afternoon Snacks, eat like a staff member, like you're on vacation, and like you grew it yourself. And donuts!
The Industry (1401-1403 E. Moyamensing Ave) is now serving up several special deals, the first one in honor of their dedicated staff members. For all Philly night-owls, you can eat the same plate served to post-service staffers for $6 on Sundays from 10 p.m. until 1 a.m. Also for those working in the hospitality 'industry' (proof required), you can eat for 20% off everyday. Monday evening munchies can now be satisfied two ways with Monday Night Burger & Bubbles. You get The Industry Burger (¼ lb. Brisket burger with lettuce, tomato, onion and pickled mayo) with either a glass of sparkling cava or brut rose for $11 (highbrow), or with a cold Miller High Life for $7.50 (divey). On Tuesdays, join them for Buckets of Champagne, where they are serving 5-bottle buckets of Miller High Life (the champagne of beers) for $10 each.

According to the fundamental laws of science, there exists in Chinatown a direct inverse correlation between the imaginativeness of the restaurant name and the quality of the food. Armed with recommendations from a couple trustworthy food blogs, I decided to try out a restaurant in Chinatown called, wait for it... Chinatown Restaurant (105 N.10th St.). Actually, the sign outside of the restaurant says Chinese Restaurant, but the menus say otherwise.
This restaurant's allure came from rumors of a secret, more authentic menu with a regional focus on Fuzhou (also spelled Foo Chow), a city in the Fujian province of eastern China. Well, turns out it wasn't so secret since it was sitting on the counter next to the longer Americanized menu. However, the waitress took one look at us and reached for the Americanized menu. When I asked if we could have one of each, she just said “no.” I looked distressed, so she asked if we had ever tried food from Fuzhou before. I (lied) said yes, and she caved. Victorious, we took our seats.
Planning on heading over to Festival Pier for tomorrow night's destined-to-be-rad Making Time Summertime Hyper-Rager? To ensure that everyone is well fueled for an epic evening of Sleigh Bells, Twin Shadow and Phantogram followed by an after party at Morgan's Pier, PYT is setting up a pop-up for the evening.
Tommy Up and crew will be serving who-cares-about-vowels Making Time CHSBRGRs, Grilled Buttered Corn, Portobello Goat Cheese Burgers, BBQ Chicken Sammies, and veg and no so veg "Wiz Wit" Dogs all in the friendly price range of $5 to $7.
A tipster sent us word today that Melange Tea Cart, Boris and Yumiko Ginsburg's mobile steeping operation usually parked on Drexel's campus, is kaput. Their website confirms: "It is with great sadness that Melange Tea Cart closed on July 16, 2012. We thank our customers for their love and support." This food-truck game is a rough business, with Renaissance Sausage, Honest Tom's and Guapo's Tacos all going to that big garage lot in the sky this year. We're sorry to see Melange, a trove of rare, unusual and exotic teas, join their ranks. Best of luck to the Ginsburgs on their future food endeavors.
Local artist Alia Diaz is looking for a home for her gorgeous pasta chandelier. Made up of countless pieces of penne, rigatoni, conchiglie, and ruotine, the chandelier hangs 7 feel wide and 6 feet across.

On today's Afternoon Snacks agenda we've got poolside lobster dinners, direct from New York coffee, and al fresco chicken and pulled pork.
Thursday brings another lobster deal – North Shore Beach Club (1031 Germantown Ave) is inviting you to Lobster Fest tomorrow July 19th. They overnighted 1¼ lb. lobsters from Maine and will be plating them along with clams, mussels, corn and potatoes. As befits a lobster feast for the masses, these plates are going for only $19 a piece, so make sure you RSVP beforehand.
It's brutal out there. As in for real ice cream weather. To help alleviate some of the late afternoon heat induced ennui, here's a round up of some ice cream happenings around town.
We're deep into berry season and Franklin Fountain (116 N. Market St.) is staying sustainable and local with their flavor of the month Berry Bonanza, a blueberry ice cream featuring fresh and organic NJ blueberries. To fight this summer's incessant heat waves, they have also created a new menu item called the Franklin Freeze, a drink that's way more satisfying than water but not as heavy as a milkshake. You choose 1 sorbet, 1 ice cream and 1 thirstade, which makes for a thinner, more thirst-quenching, blended treat. The Berley Brothers suggest lemon sorbet, blueberry ice cream and lemonade.
Meal Ticket HQ is located dangerously close to Han Dynasty (108 Chestnut St.), home to some of the spiciest, numbingest dishes around. A lunchtime jaunt to satisfy a craving for Sichuan ended up uncovering an unadvertised menu of lunch specials. All entrees including the always awesome Double Cooked Pork Belly, Cumin Lamb, and Mapo Tofu are offered in lunch-sized portions for 60% of the full price. Today's was a kind of perfect for the weather duo of Dry Pepper Chicken ($6.95) and Spicy Crispy Cucumbers ($6.95).
