The $100 cheesesteak debuted at Barclay Prime's (237 South 18th St.) menu in 2004, an over the top ciabatta roll stuffed with Waygu, foie gras, fontina and shaved truffles. Up until recently the sandwich was served with a half bottle of Perrier Jouet, a fine French bubbly. We've just caught word that the folks at Barclay have now introduced the option of pairing the cheesesteak with a glass of 2000 Dom Pérignon.
Never having had the opportunity to pair cheesesteaks and French Champagne, the combo sounds kind of ridiculous but also intriguing. We'll give it shot next time uncle Scrooge McDuck is in town.
On Sunday, August 26 Marcie Turney's Midtown Village Spanish spot, Jamonera (105 S. 13th St.) is hosting an end of summer ten course tapas tasting. For $40 guests can sample a flight of Spanish-inspired plates featuring August favorites like corn, tomatoes and watermelon.
Bliss (4420 Walnut St.), the Manakeesh crew's Lebanese scoop shop we told you about back in May is finally scooping. "We soft-opened about two weeks ago during Ramadan and now we are open in full force," says manager Abd Ghazzawi. A wall was blown out to connect the Creamsicle-colored scoop shop with the savory side of the business; bananas crowd atop pastry cases laden with oranges, watermelons and mangoes, the bases for Bliss's fresh-pressed juices, yogurt smoothies and fruit salad "cocktails" topped with ashta, a ricotta-like Middle Eastern cheese, and honey. There's also Lebanese puddings, granita and a dozen flavors of Bassets ice cream, plus a house-made pistachio ice cream. Here's a link to the full menu:
New food trucks, crazy cookies and free beer on today's Afternoon Snacks!
Having read so much about the Chicago Monte Cristo, we’re patiently awaiting the Philly debut of the Sunflower Truck Stop. Or maybe not so patiently: today found us way up in Pottstown for breakfast at Shorty’s Sunflower Café (1494 N. Charlotte St., Pottstown). Owner George Bieber is champing at the bit to begin vending in the city, but reports Philly’s official stamp of approval is not likely to come until later in September. Keep an eye out for the truck in a new City Ave. spot sometime in the next week or two.
The final season of No Reservations kicks premiers on September 3 and Pitchfork shared this teaser of Tony in Austin for South By Southwest. hanging with Sleigh Bells. For this year's fest Sleigh Bells rented a house outside of Austin and invited Tony over for some pretty good looking eats. Check out this clip for a pig roast, crawfish boil and Alexis Krauss mixing up a round of avocado margaritas.

Brauhaus Schmitz (718 South St.) is the place to be come Oktoberfest. They just released their weeklong O-fest lineup and it's pretty epic. Here's a look at some of the bier-soaked festivities that Brauhaus has planned:
Monday, September 24: Oktoberfest Flight Night
Brauhaus will be pouring flights of German and domestic Oktoberfest beers and serving a three course dinner
Tuesday, September 25: German Beer Quizzo
Are you a German beer aficionado? Test your skills.
Wednesday, September 26: Spaten/Franziskaner Party
Specials on Spaten and Franziskaner beers plus a chance to win a Franziskaner bike.
Thursday, September 27: Bratwurst Eating Contest
20 folks will vie for the title of ultimate bratwurst eating champion.
Friday, September 28: Kick the Keg Lottery
Help Brauhaus empty the kegs in preparation for the big day.
Saturday, September 29: 4th Annual Oktoberfest
They're shutting down South Street for this rager. There's a pig roast and oompah music in the works. Oh, and beer. Lots and lots of beer. Don't forget those VIP tickets.
Fishtown is getting a new drink in/takeout beer destination come October. Bottle Bar East is opening up shop at 1308 Frankford Ave. with cans and bottle of craft brews, 6 taps and growlers ready to fill to drink in house or in the comfort of your own digs. Planned rec room amenities include a pool table and dart board. Novices take note, Bottle Bar East is going to be staffed with a crew of beer geeks ready and willing to assist with all barley-hops-and-malt inquiries.
At the risk of drawing the ire of sun-worshipping readers, some of us here at Meal Ticket are positively giddy at the signs of fall cropping up around us. Today on Afternoon Snacks: first hints of a changing season.
McGillin’s Old Ale House (1310 Drury St.) is gearing up for Oktoberfest, with seasonal beers on offer and lots of new lunch and dinner specials heavy on German flavors. Beginning in just a matter of days, you’ll be able to pair your platter of wursts and red cabbage with any of a plethora of Oktoberfest brews (from Sly Fox, Flying Fish, Yuengling, and others) or a Saranac Pumpkin Ale. The Oktoberfest fun comes to a head on October 6th, when McGillin’s contribution to the Midtown Village Fall Festival will be to transform Drury Street into a boisterous beer garden.
It’s tough being vegan. Even when there’s an animal-free option lurking on the menu, it’s hard to silence that little voice in your head that wonders if someone might try to slip you some bacon or sneak in a splash of cream. Happily, this Wednesday, August 22nd, the Khyber Pass Pub (56 S. 2nd St.) wants to help you relax—at least between the hours of 6 pm and 2 am. Yes, it’s time for another installment of Vegan Cocktails Philly, and vegans can rest easy knowing that everything on offer respects their choice.
The titular vegan cocktails include twists on Southern classics that are pitch-perfect for summer: the Huckleberry Pimm is a Pimm’s Cup with blueberries, and a Watermelon Lightning introduces everyone’s favorite picnic treat to a Louisville Lightning (typically a mix of bourbon and lemonade). A blood orange-tinged Sunset Hurricane and a Blackberry Mint Julep round out the cocktail list. There will also be a selection of vegan beers available to satisfy those who avoid the hard stuff (and to spoil another fun thing for anyone who hadn’t yet considered that beer might ever not be cruelty-free).
Of course, the menu at Khyber Pass Pub always keeps hungry vegans in mind, and Wednesday night will be no exception. Among other offerings, dining options will include green tomato gazpacho, a faux-catfish po-boy, wild mushroom étouffée, vegan jambalaya, and Natchitoches “meat” pies. Go crazy, veg-heads!
