In addition to being America's third president, Thomas Jefferson was an obsessive horticulturalist, filling his famed Monticello garden with all sort of indigenous and exotic species. Jefferson even deployed his Philadelphia plant pal Bernard McMahon to chronicle the native flora on the Lewis and Clark Expedition; the resulting compendium, Flora Americae, inspires the latest old-timey sprit from Art in the Age, SAGE, a "garden gin" infused with rosemary, thyme, lavender, fennel, angelica, dandelion, sumac and, of course, sage. Look for it on state store shelves sometime in the next two weeks.

Note: Frida Garza's part time gig working at local farmers' markets affords for plenty of produce, sometimes a little more than she can handle. In Stay Fresh she'll be chiming in with recipe ideas for her seasonal bounty.

A general rule of thumb is that goat cheese is good up to two weeks after opening, if well refrigerated. According to Nolan Thevenet of Stryker Farm, the process of making goat cheese leaves a smaller carbon footprint than its cow-sourced counterparts. Not only that, but the cheese itself is made up of tinier fat molecules, making it easier to digest than regular dairy products.

Other cities may have pit beef and grinders, Philadelphia has the market cornered on sandwich culture. Last night on the finale of America's Best Sandwich Adam Richman upped Philly's sandwich cred even further by awarding the top honors to our very own DiNic's roast pork. The provolone and broccoli rabe topped sandwich beat out some serious contenders including Al's Italian Beef in Chicago, Maine lobster rolls, and Domilise's shrimp po boy in New Orleans.

Eater checked in with owner Joe Nicolosi to see what's in store for the award winning sandwich stand. The verdict? Keep on keepin' on. Nicolosi isn't interested in expanding his roast pork empire, he'd rather keep his Reading Terminal stand as the one and only old school DiNic's.

Today on Afternoon Snacks, we've got a seafood prix fixe and a crazy local tap takeover.

This evening starting at 4 p.m., Barcade (1114 Frankford Ave) is hosting Prism Brewing Company (810 Dickerson Rd, North Wales) for brewing night. Philly has got a lot of good beer, but these local brews are really mixing things up with chives and cardamom, and wasabi. We say it looks worthy of a beerventure into Fishtown. Here's the draft line up:

As Liberty Walk’s first hot spot, Bar Ferdinand (1030 N. 2nd St.), approaches its sixth anniversary, one can’t help but get a little misty eyed. I hit owner/interior designer Owen Kamihira’s Spanish tapas and sangria spot while its walls were still blank so it’s weird still to think of it as being a veteran in Philly’s restaurant stakes. Bar Ferdinand still seems new. “It’s freakish to consider our age,” laughs Kamihira.

Food truck aficionados and street festival lovers take note, the Night Market is popping up again this evening in Mt. Airy. Spanning from the 6800 block to the 7200 block of Germantown Avenue, this installation of the market is promising 50 food trucks, craft vendors, drinks by way of Yards, Penns Woods Wines and cocktails from Philadelphia Distilling, and live music curated by WXPN.

The Food Trust just released a guide to this evening's festivities and there's an absolute ton of trucks converging on Germantown Ave. serving everything from waffles to takoyaki, popsicles and cheese curds. The party starts at 6 and runs until 10:30 p.m. And on the off chance that the weather chooses not to cooperate, August 23rd is the rain date.
