McGillin's WFC Phillies cocktails

McGillin's Olde Ale House (1310 Drury Lane) is celebrating our division-clinching Phillies they best way they know how with booze. On the left is what they're calling the Phanatic Pheckin Bomb, a boilermaker-type operation consisting of a shot (1/4 shot Apple Pucker, 3/4 shot Feckin Irish Whiskey) and 3/4 of a pint of Original Sin Apple Cider. On the right is the bar's red and white Phillies-tini, a mix-up of raspberry vodka, triple sec and cranberry juice served up in a sugar-rimmed martini glass.

Oct. 3-10: River Ward Restaurant Week

Suck it, Center City District. That's the message neighborhoods outside the Center City borders what are those borders these days exactly, anyway? are sending to the organizers of Philly's largest Restaurant Week, which, thanks be to God, just ended. Earlier this month, Adsum, Izumi, James and seven other spots the Center City District didn't ask to prom turned their jilted emotions into their own pre-fixe par-tay. In October, the River Ward districts do the same, though you could call the comprised nabes of Fishtown, Kensington and Port Richmond the originators of the alt-Restaurant Week, as this year's is the second annual installment. From Sun., Oct. 3 through Sun., Oct. 10, Johnny Brenda's, Hinge Cafe, Green Rock Tavern and others will offer specials and pre-fixe menus at various price points. Stay tuned to the River Ward Restaurant Week's cool blog for details, and peep all the participants' deals after the jump. The deadly delicious Krispy Kreme chain will mark its triumphant, best-eaten-warm return to the Philadelphia market on Nov. 9, when it opens a new location at 7855 Oxford Avenue in Fox Chase, about one block from the just-launched Hop Angel Brauhaus. Though the Southern-based brand plans on opening upwards of 20 locations in the region between now and 2017, there are two slated for more immediate debuts, sometime in 2011: as-yet-undetermined shops for both Bensalem and Center City. Which got us thinking: Where along Billy Penn's grid would one place a Krispy Kreme to maximize its seductive, just-baked olfactory luring power? We bet a KK, neon hot-doughnut sign and all, would wreck in a neighborhood with a lot of foot traffic maybe on or around 13th Street between Chestnut and Locust as a companion to that hopping restaurant row. What do you think?

APO bids farewell

APO Bar + Lounge (née Apothecary), the cocktail lounge at 13th and Drury, has announced its closing after two years in the Kold Draft ice cube-clinking business. (Remember when?) In a characteristically grinning press release, the bar's principles, URBANSPACEDEVELOPMENT, announced that the bar, whose ground level had been sealed off for impending renovations, will close for good after last call this Saturday, Oct. 2. Taking over the space is Tony Rim, owner of the nearby RAW (1225 Sansom St.), who we've spotting milling about behind the bar for several months now; details about Rim's intentions for the space are still unclear, but USD will be responsible for reworking the space into its as-yet-unannounced new incarnation.

I will not miss this place at all. When it first opened the drinks bordered on sublime. The prices were high, but fair. Over the last year, and maybe longer, the prices inched up and the quality plummeted. I recall a $100 night with 3 friends where none of us felt sated. The new concoctions were based on cheap ingredients, small pours, and unimaginative combinations. In hindsight, these were all tell-tale signs of place that was on its way out.

Once a week, Team Meal Ticket shares its latest sugar-laden fixations. Do not tell 0ur dentist. IN QUESTION: Yan Yan is the brand name of a Japanese line of snacks that consist of crunchy, slightly sweet "biscuit sticks" packaged with a Dunkaroo-esque frosting dip. Flavors include vanilla, chocolate, strawberry or "yogurt." Staying cognizant of the number of sticks to ensure even frosting distribution, as well as rationing the frosting to protect from the dreaded "all sticks, no dip" problem, is a serious fat man's thinking man's game. AVAILABLE AT: The amazing candy aisle at Hung Vuong Supermarket (Wing Phat Plaza, 11th and Washington), the little candy shop on the parking-lot side of Viet Huong (also in Wing Phat Plaza), and pretty much any store where fine fish sauces are sold. HOW MANY DO WE TYPICALLY EAT IN ONE SITTING?: Try to keep it one package if we're not sharing, but sometimes it becomes a two-fer situation. The sticks are so damn crunchy, can't help it. FINER POINTS: Yan Yan makes for a great late-night or midday snack but by far the most awesome aspect here are the bizarre animal-themed sayings printed on each biscuit stick. Many make general sense ("Duck: Go For A Swim," "Octopus: Lucky Number 8") or are informative ("Giraffe: Tallest Mammal"), but most are either weird and cryptic ("Fox: Beware of Lies") or just apropos of absolutely nothing ("Stag Beetle: Love It").

- Just in time for Halloween, BoingBoing (via MakeProjects) shares a how-to-make guide for a scary-ass meat head. No, not a 'roided out gym rat, but a literal head, made out of meat. (Red Jell-O is also involved.) It's almost guaranteed to creep out any trick-or-treaters trying to doublefist some candy. - Speaking of scary things, what better way to greet houseguests than stabbing their jacket to your wall? Courtesy of Geekologie, these knife coat hooks are a surefire way to ensure your visitors leave on time. They are sure to be a hit. No, a stab! A slice? Ah, I could go on for days. - I know I'm not the only burger fan who enjoys the occasional veggie patty. Thankfully, Burgatory explains his recent absence (vegetarian hiatus, phew! Here on Meal Ticket we've been following American Blackboard, the upcoming "Lost American" restaurant from Philly Kitchen Share culinary director Tim McGinnis. Though that restaurant, adjacent to PKS, is shooting for a November opening, you'll be able to get a sneak peek at the menu on Oct. 23, when McGinnis teams up with his Spinal Tapas partner Brian McManus and fellow-chef brother Jason Roberts to offer a $50 all-inclusive sneak peek (w/ wine) at the restaurant's menu. The cheffing trio will put out a selection of charcuterie (rabbit rillettes, tasso ham, country pate, duck prosciutto), plus Cape May salts, hay-roasted carrots, chorizo oil-poached black bass and pear cobbler with ginger ice cream. Many of the ingredients are being sourced from West Philly's Mill Creek Farm, and a portion of ticket sales will benefit the operation. Head to phillykitchenshare.com for ticket info.

Two tasty locales are celebrating los cumpleanos tomorrow, Sept. 29, and that means some literally-sweet dealage is in order. Pizzeria Stella (420 S. Second St.) is marking its first 12 months in business here's our year-old post on the opening! with free gelato for any guest who purchases food. Tomorrow's flavors include basil, hazelnut, blackberry, stracciatella and toasted coconut. Across town, frequent Meal Ticket haunt Mémé (2201 Spruce St.) is turning dos and will be giving out free cake to all diners. If you find a piece of chocolate in your slice, you'll win a $100 gift certificate. (Way better than a plastic baby!) Don't forget they also rock a $35 prix-fixe every night they're open, with a corresponding $2-a-pop Champagne/High Life drink deal.
