Booze

This weekend, beer bars in the know are tapping the seasonal All Day IPA (formerly called Endurance) from Founders, a craft brewery in Grand Rapids, MI that’s much beloved by Philadelphia beverage enthusiasts. This power session beer, coming in at just 4.7% ABV and 147 calories, is, according to their website “The beer you’ve been waiting for.” Compared with the 7.2% ABV of Founder’s flagship IPA, Centennial, this toned down brew does seem to provide a saner choice for casual, summery activities enhanced with a light buzz: camping, tubing, picnicking, ball game watching, and the like.

Founders only offers two seasonal, limited release beers each year (the other is the wintry Breakfast Stout), so for a city as obsessed and zealous about their beer drinking habits as ours, this is kind of a big deal. Kite and Key, Bishop’s Collar, Memphis Taproom, The South Philly Taproom ($3 pints!) are all tapping the All Day IPA today. For a more impressive take home quantity, the Beer Yard (218 East Lancaster Ave., Wayne PA) is offering an All Day tasting all day long, so you can see if all the hype is worth the $41 plus tax for a case to call your own.

If you can hold your horses until Monday, Local 44 in West Philly is tapping All Day on Monday at 11AM, though it threatens to be outshined by a whole mess of highly sought after beers, including (ready for this?): Russian River’s Pliny the Younger, Pliny the Elder, Damnation, Supplication, and Consecration 2011, Troeg’s Nugget Nectar, De Dolle’s Arabier, and a Local 44/Manayunk collabo called Duet, a 5% sour-ish Belgian Pale inspired by Taras Boulba and De Ranke XX Bitter. Sounds like a good enough reason to call out sick from work and test out your all day drinking skills.

Here at Meal Ticket education is a priority and we're always looking to expand our horizons, especially when those horizons are booze-related. On that note we're pleased to inform you that Cantina Los Caballitos (1601 E. Passyunk Ave.) is hosting its second meeting of the Tequila Club on Tuesday, February 26 at 7 p.m.

Tequila Club is a place for the agave curious to come together and learn the finer points of blancos, reposados and anejos with Cantina beverage manager Leah Martino. Having attended the inaugural meeting, we can attest that the $35 is sweet deal for a tasting flight of tequilas paired with some pretty serious small plates (think shrimp ceviche, chorizo croquettes and mocha flan).

The theme of the second meeting is Highlands and Lowlands featuring several blancos from different regions of Jalisco. Seating is limited to reserve your spot here or call 215-755-3550.

Hey, do you guys remember yesterday when we told you where to get FREE BEER pretty much every day for the rest of the month? Of course you do. Well, we realized after this public service post went live that we missed a few. Here are a few more for your gratis drinking enjoyment.

On Thursday, February 21st Fair Food Philly Farmstand is teaming up with Philly Beer Scene magazine at Reading Terminal from 4 to 6 p.m. for a beer and cheese tasting. The raw goat milk cheeses are coming from Yellow Spring Farms and beers are TBA but there's a good chance that Victory will be pouring since one of the cheeses featured, Yellow Brick Road, is washed in Golden Monkey.

Bell Beverage (2809 S. Front St.) hosts tastings every single Friday just in time for totally free happy hour i.e. from 4 to 6 p.m. They've got Smuttynose sampling on the 15th and Weyerbacher coming your way on the 22nd.

Limoncello mistress Joan Verratti, who we've written about before, has been selling her water-based 'cellos at state stores (lemon and chocolate) and her East Passyunk tasting room (those, plus orange and lime) since the holidays. Today, she'll premiere her cream-based liqueurs in five flavors on the Ave.: lemon, orange, chocolate, banana and strawberry. That last flavor, says Joan, "perfect for Valentine's Day."

P.S. Joan and Tom are hosting a grand opening (read: tasting) party for their 1908 E. Passyunk Ave. 'cello-porium on February 23rd from 1 to 8 p.m.

Well, we've still got a little while to go before but we would like to let you know that when 5 o'clock hits Franklin Mortgage (112. S 18th St.) is the place to be. Head bartender, Al Sotack announced that Franklin's 14th menu is rolling out tonight with 8 classics and 20 new additions to the menu. As per usual the menu is made up of cocktails crafted by the entire staff including newcomers like Sara Justice and recently promoted Colin O'Neill.

We have to agree with Sotack, the menu is looking pretty stellar, rife with music, film and lit references. There are plenty of places in town mixing up solid cocktails but we're pretty sure that Franklin in the only place where you can choose from drinks named for Deerhunter albums and Aleister Crowley books.

Well folks, it's just about cocktail o'clock and this afternoon we suggest booking it up to French cocktail parlor Emmanuelle (1052. N. Hancock St.) to check out their fresh crop of wintry drinks. The new menu goes live this evening and there are some fine looking drinks on the list including ones designed to ward off the cold weather like the Earth's Yellow Sun, a blend of Napoleon armagnac, orange & spiced scotch, Cocchi Americano and chamomile tincture and the warming Hot Sicilian Widow with aged rum, amaro Averna, honey, falernum and boiling water. Along with the new menu, Emmanuelle is also offering NA temperance cocktails for the teetotalers out there as well as tailor-made custom cocktails if you'd like to go off the menu and punches made for sharing with a crowd.

Last night’s Beyoncé concert Super Bowl kicked off a month that’s all about the brewski.

Lebanon’s first and only craft beer – dubbed 961 in reference to the country’s international dialing code – arrives at Bryn Mawr’s Garrett Hill Ale House (157 Garrett Avenue) this Thursday at 6 pm. Rub shoulders with banker-turned-beer guy Mazen Hajjar and try his featured creations, including a Hong Kong International Beer Award-winning lager and a Middle Eastern spin on the English IPA that smacks of sage, anise, and mint.

Having gotten your fill of worldly libations, head to Devil’s Den (1148 South 11th Street) for something local. At 7 pm they’re hosting the Weyerbacher Vertical Insanity Tasting, where you can sample a flight of four robust Pennsylvania beers: the 2011-13 renderings of Weyerbacher Insanity, plus a dose of Weyerbacher Blithering Idiot.

Last but not least, mark your calendars for February 20th, when the Den brings you another booze-filled evening, this one dedicated to Fourplay, Stoudt’s new limited release IPA. Stoudt’s drafts and flights are a dollar off after seven, and the first twenty-four to order Fourplay score a free Stoudt’s pint glass.

Note: Welcome to State Store, a column where we hit the Wine & Spirits shops of Philly and see what's new and noteworthy or just plain weird.

As we all know our local state stores are full of all kinds of bizarro boozy gems such as chocolate wine  and Adult Strawberry Milk. A recent trip to our local bottle shop turned up another lovely addition to our finds: Bakon Vodka. And yeah, that's Bakon with a K.

A trip over to Bakon's site turns up all sorts of intriguing/scary recipes some of which make perfect sense like a Bakon Bloody Mary and a Pickled Bakon Martini (yup, that's be Bakon vodka and pickle juice) while others have us running for the hills (see the Bakon Mocha Martini, a blend of white chocolate liqueur, coffee liqueur, heavy cream and Bakon).

But there's one drink in there that is head-scratching enough to make us want to pick up a bottle of Bakon and that's the Pizza Shot. This combo of Bakon, pineapple juice, tomato juice and oregano allegedly tastes just like a slice of Hawaiian pizza.

Have you tried Bakon? Would you like to? Let us know in the comments!
