South Philly's vegan coffee shop, Grindcore House (1515 S. Fourth St.), hosts author/nutritionist Genevieve Sherrow tonight at 6 p.m. for a discussion of her debut book, Gluten Free Warrior, a how-to guide for taking charge of a gluten-free lifestyle as well as a collection of GF recipes. Sherrow, a graduate of the MS Nutrition program at Seattle's Bastyr University, will discuss the contents of the book and the story behind how she came about writing it. During the talk, samples of her recipes will be available — look forward to a Thai-style bouillabaise and quinoa with nori, sesame and raw cashews, among other dishes. Grindcore has recently added gluten-free baked goods to its vegan repertoire, and feel that this event will enlighten all of us as to how those living without gluten can manage their lifestyle while still taking pleasure in what they eat. Following the book discussion will be a Q&A with the author. To learn more about Sherrow, check out her blog here.

Justin Manne, a Philly native and former coffee consultant for Garces Restaurant Group, has joined up with Rittenhouse Square coffee shop/beer bar hybrid The Coffee Bar (Radisson-Warwick Hotel, 1701 Locust St.), and changes are a'brewing. New salads and pita sandwiches accompanied by housemade dressing and potato chips have been added to the lunch menu, but in case you can't make it in during the daylight, there are now more options for night owls, too. Available from 5 p.m. to close, their "late-night" menu includes assorted bruschetta, a hummus plate and truffle-buttered popcorn. Pair up your nosh of choice with a craft beer or a glass from the newly added sparkling wine list, or spike the hot chocolate of your choice with Kalhua or brandy for a sweet nightcap. Keep an eye out for future wine and beer tastings organized by Manne, as well.

Philly's serious coffeehouses hold court in the neighborhoods (Bodhi and Shot Tower in QV/BV, Ultimo in Newbold; Lovers & Madmen in West Philly, and many more), but it's been some time since Center City proper got an espresso shot in the arm. Enter Elixr, which Evan Inatome unveiled Wednesday in the old Hausbrandt space (207 S. 15th St., b/t Walnut and Locust). Inatome, who's brewing Kansas' PT's Coffee on a La Marzocco machine, plans on running long hours (Mon.-Fri. 6 a.m.-10 p.m.; Sat.-Sun 7 a.m.-10 p.m.) to accommodate the area's heavy foot traffic and large population of apartment building dwellers. The space, tricked out with a floor-to-ceiling glass facade and lots of pretty reclaimed wood, features window rail seating as well as communal picnic-style tables. Elixr is also carrying Au Fournil pastries and Marathon Grill sandwiches at the moment, with plans to expand its non-coffee offerings more everything gets settled. Inatome, who's done a lot of relief work overseas, plans on donating a 20 percent portion of Elixr's take to various charities, including initiatives he's involved with in coalition with his brother-in-law and business partner, Eagles tackle Winston Justice.

Uh, actually it's priced right. Everything right around $3 for far superior quality than what's around.

Such a beautiful and rich design using natural, warm and "earthy" elements with just the right amount of flair. The thoughtful design no doubt reflects the quality of the products and the genuine warmth of the environment. I know Evan has spent years perfecting his knowledge of coffees as well as improving the lives of people all over the world. What a perfect BLEND (pun intended!)

Sweet, another over-priced coffee place in the area for people to go to and study. (Because it only counts if it's done in public)

South Street-based OCF Realty, whose gray-and-green property signs hang and flap in pretty much every Philly neighborhood imaginable, is working on opening two coffee shops of its own, though one's closer than the other. The first OCF Cafe, at 18th and South (a mere three blocks from OCF HQ at 2054 South Street), is expected to open in early February; the space will feature room for 30-35, and will pour Counter Culture coffees in addition to sandwiches and baked goods from as-yet-undetermined purveyors. The second shop is planned for 20th and Federal; same plan, just a little bigger. It should open in the spring; that'll be a nice companion biz to the in-the-works American Sardine Bar two blocks east at 18th and Federal.

Mariel Freeman and Mat Derago's Shot Tower Coffee, which we sneak-peeked (snuck pucked?) last week, officially opened for business this morning at 542 Christian. Beautiful, natural light-filled space, as you can see above. The couple is rocking Stumptown beans on a galactic warship of a La Marzocco espresso machine — this new model, which allows a barista absolute control over pressure levels in the seconds it takes to pull a shot, is the first of its kind on American soil on the East Coast. Nothing too crazy as far as food goes just yet — they're doing an array of bakery-case breakfast treats for now, but may expand their offerings in the future. Shot Tower is open daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Thanks to the Meal Ticket tipster who dropped off these shots inside Shot Tower Coffee at Sixth and Christian. Owners Mat Derago and Mariel Freeman have taken the paper down; hope to open their doors within the week. The light fixture (was just told that light fixture shots are an obligatory MT feature — didn't realize, but I'm into it!) you see in the second picture was designed by Robert True Ogden, who's also responsible for the great pieces inside Bodhi Coffee (410 S. Second St.). Like its Headhouse compatriot, Shot Tower will be serving Stumptown coffee; for more details, check out this post (then it was still called Commonwealth).

1 Shot Coffee opened in its brand-new location at American and George this past Friday, so we paid a quick visit this a.m. to grab some pics of this quite-impressive bilevel space for y'all. Philly-based hospitality designer Chris Sheffield, who also happens to be a 1 Shot regular, put together the plans for owner Melissa Baruno's new café, a serious upgrade from 1 Shot's more modest original home on Liberties Walk. The ground floor has a traditional coffeehouse feel, but there are innumerable thoughtful touches, like distressed ceiling panels, a plush banquette, globule lighting fixtures, a stool-seating coffee bar and custom shelving to house 1 Shot's supply of Stumptown beans. Head up a flight of stairs and you'll find 1 Shot's communal-style second floor, complete with bookshelves, comfy-couch reading area and all styles of seating; also check out the drink rail framing a (currently inoperable) '79 Honda motorcycle, which the 1 Shot crew wheeled up the staircase themselves. Chef Michael Thomas, late of Kraftwork, is offering a brunch-style menu — lots of veggie/vegan options — every day from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Check it out in full after the jump.

Fishtown's Lola Bean (1325 Frankford Ave.), hardcore contender for more adorable-est café in all the land, has steadily expanded its menu since opening a few months ago. Mainstays like the vegan veggie hummus wrap (above; spinach zucchini, squash, onion, sun-dried tomatoes, carrot, hummus) and their house bagel sandwich (above; hard-boiled egg, cheddar, arugula, fig spread, sea salt, pepper) have been joined by a grilled eggplant ciabatta sandwich, grab-and-go hummus platters, vegan cookies from North Port Fishington Cookie Co. and more. Argh, stop being so cute and healthy!

Albania, the beautiful
There are so many coffeeshops on and around East Passy that  if need be the Avenue could caffeinate the entire city. This Saturday, Dec. 4, sees the grand opening of another, Mondial Café (1941 E. Passyunk) across from the hulking Colombo's structure. There'll be coffee, of course, but Albanian owners Ervis Elezaj and Nevila Bram are differentiating their digs by serving eats from the motherland amid their roundly Mediterranean menu. (Albania is pretty, yo!) Ummm, could we be more stoked to try comlek, a traditional rabbit casserole? Not a chance. Do pop in to Mondial Saturday. There are free apps and wine in it for ya.

Melissa Baruno tells Meal Ticket that the new location of 1 Shot Coffee — it's moved from its original home in Liberties Walk to a multi-level space on nearby American Street (rendering above; we first reported on it here) — will debut to the public this coming Friday, Dec. 3. We'll have some more details for y'all soon, but for now: Chef is Michael Thomas, most recently of Kraftwork. He'll be offering a brunch-style menu seven days a week, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
